Why you might want the 120 Gig hard drive

I know this is sort of old news to some of you. But I notice more and more posts of people who seem to think the 120 gig hard drive is pointless because of how little space everything on marketplace currently takes up.

Obviously many people have not heard of Microsofts part in IPTV. Well recently, maybe even today, they launched a new site: http://www.microsoftmediaroom.com/

Which gives you kind of an overview about IPTV. Keep in mind that this is all coming to 360 in the Fall update. This is the primary reason for the big hard drive.

Yes, it is. But in another thread last week there was a lot of people whining that the 120 gig hard drive was a waste because 20 gigs is plenty. It is obvious that IPTV is new news to a lot of new 360 owners. And now Microsoft has a name for it, and a website.
i don't know many people with fiber connections to their home, in fact i don't know of anyone...
In my city, and the neighbor city, it's everywhere. Most people have or soon will switch from cable to Fiber. Most houses have access to it. And it is growing fast. It's growing fast, most major cities will have it widespread very soon.

Me neither, but I know alot of the new communities being built around me all have fiber installed during the construction process.

I already know I need a bigger drive. Just can't justify spending $200 for 120GB HDD.

Maybe they'll lower the price of the HDD this fall...

Yeah ... not for me. I can't stand not having some kind of physical media for all but the most minor downloads (Geometry Wars? Ok. Shivering Isles? No thanks.), so really, I've got all the storage space I need.

$200? :whistle2:s

Are you charging yourself an extra $20 premium we weren't aware of? It's $180.

I made the switch from the 20GB to the 120GB for around $20 out of pocket, between some games traded into GC and selling my old drive. The data transfer was pretty painless, and it's nice having lots of space on the drive.

Because of cablevision.

Who in their right mind would want TV service through their 360? So when your 360 dies, not only are you out a gaming machine, but you can't watch television and you can't watch your HD-DVDs either. Solid plan.

Got mine for no cash out of pocket via GS store credit. The transfer went surprisingly well, although it did take a little over 1 1/2 hours, but like you said, the extra storage is awesome. Instead of fretting over the remaining 0.5 - 3 gigs of space and feeling like I needed to delete stuff all of the time, I'm resting easy on 91 gigs of free space. Fantastic. Demos, here I come!

Some folks get stuck paying sales tax so by the time you pay 7-8% on $180 you are pretty damned close to $200

If I have the extra money in the near future I'll probably get it. 2 accounts for two different people takes up a lot of space. My brother and I are down to 4 GB and that's after deleting any excess crap other than games and downloaded add-ons/updates.
Does anyone here think there will be a price drop for the 120GB HDD anytime soon?(Or at all)
It still hasn't dropped for the 20GB. Holding your breath will be a fool's errand.

Rather than companies working on providing even faster broadband to communities that already have access to broadband why don't they work on providing broadband capabilities to communities that still don't have any form of broadband? Where I live we still don't have broadband and it's starting to really piss me off. The internet is becoming almost unusable over dial-up.

Agreed.

There are many rural communities around here that are only now getting DSL access available to them. Up until last week, I had been using dial-up while here at home, and it was practically worthless.

It took this long just for us to get DSL around here; I can't imagine how long it would be before fiber optic was in use here.
I'll stick to downloading and streaming AVIs.
I have tried tversity and have never gotten it to work well. Transcoding on the fly must require pretty hefty hardware to be smooth and bug free, which i don't have.

I got TVersity to work a little bit...but then it got super fussy about codecs, so I gave up on it.

I don't really use the 360 anymore for vids. I just transcode them, throw on my external HDD and watch them on my PS3.

i use transcode360 with xp media center edition and it works perfectly
So all you guys streaming media are watching HD stuff?
yeah....every week i download Big Love and Entourage (HBO shows) in HD and stream them....looks great and streams beautifully
So all you guys streaming media are watching HD stuff?
nope, but it's good enough. i mostly watch animated stuff anyway, so HD isnt going to make it look that much better.

My girlfriend's house is the only one I know of with FiOs. And honestly, in just browsing the internet or playing DS online while I'm there, I couldn't tell a difference.

Oh and her house is 3 hours away in another state, so yeah there's no chance of it being available here any time soon.
