According to new info, it may be coming at you sooner and for less...

When Nintendo announced last week that the Wii would not exceed 25,000 Yen in Japan (or $250 in America), most people were expecting a finalized price point of $199. After all, without expensive internal technology, Nintendo wouldn’t need to worry about recouping the kind of massive manufacturing costs Microsoft and Sony are experiencing. Surprisingly, though, the Wii may be even more affordable than that.
According to QJ.Net, Japanese retailer PC-Success had the Wii listed as costing 18,000 Yen at launch, hinting at a possible $149 price point in the United States. PC-Success has since taken down the price, but curiously, fellow Japanese online store Kakaku.Livedoor still has the same price up.

Nintendo’s staying completely silent on the topic of the Wii’s price point, and rightfully so; revealing their launch price plans certainly didn’t do Sony any favors at E3 earlier this month. It’s likely that Nintendo is still finalizing what they’ll package in with the system, and as such, the cost that Kakaku.Livedoor and PC-Success have published could be an estimate.

Iwata and Co. are keeping this information close to their heart, but with the system’s launch planned for late Fall, they’ll have to reveal it soon. The Tokyo Game Show in September would be a good opportunity, but it could happen sooner. The only thing we know for sure is that a $149 tag, being only a quarter of the price of the PS3, could do wonders for Nintendo at launch.

In other launch-related news, a recent blog post at Jeux-France states that GameStop has sent out documents claiming an October 2nd release date for three Wii launch titles: Rayman Raving Rabbids, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and SpongeBob SquarePants. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the console will launch on the same day; the Xbox 360, for example, wasn’t available publicly until a week after launch software went on store shelves.

Furthermore, while the early launch date would secure Nintendo some thunder to steal from Sony (who wouldn’t be releasing the PS3 for another month and a half), it may be too early, as games like Red Steel are still slated for November, as explained by Chris Kohler. These release dates are always subject to change, and taking that into account, it remains much more likely that Nintendo won’t launch the Wii until November. Again, we’ll have to wait and see.

Stay tuned to PGC as more on these stories break.

If this turns out to be true, I will definately get a Wii.

When nintendo says under 250, they mean 249.99 or a bit less. not a hundred dollars less. Then nintendo woulda said under $200, or under $150. For a console at launch, that price is absurd, unless nintendo offers some crazy stripped-down version with a worse remote.

But for $30 more you can get an Xbox and Forza!

I'd be absolutely stunned if the Wii launched at $149. It would definitely move a lot of systems though.

I don't think they'll release anything at $149, but we can imagine...

let's speculate that $249 gets you a console, two wiimotes, retro controller, and a $50 msrp game.

console and 1 wiimote at $149 would then seem reasonable.

This makes a wiimote, retro controller, and a game cost $100. At $30 for a wiimote, $20 for a retro, and $50 for a game, that adds up. If the controllers msrp for more, then the bundle is a bargain.

Wheeeee! Er, I mean, Wiiiiiii...

I too would be buying it at launch (1st ever) if it were that price. I sincerely doubt it will be that cheap, but if Nintendo is hungry for market share they just might do it.

To scale for inflation (if it launches at $150) would this not be the cheapest console launch of all time???!

I think so...

I'd be perfectly willing to pay $200 for a Wii... even $250.. Wow, if it's $150....
To scale for inflation (if it launches at $150) would this not be the cheapest console launch of all time???!
It would probably be the cheapest of all time at $200 if you account for inflation.

I'd probably buy at launch at $150, assuming I could have everything I need to play (2 wii-motes and a game) for $200-220 + tax. Seems too good to be true, but I have my fingers crossed.
QFT means "quit shaq-fu-ing talking", er no?
Quoted For Truth. My apologies if this is just a case of my sarcasm detector needing a tune-up.

No, I was being literal. I really didn't know what QFT meant. Sorry to get OT here but are you being sarcastic here or not? What does Quoted for Truth mean? "Agreed?"..

Cool. My best guess had been that QFT meant "Quite F---ing True".

I'll probably end up spending at least $300 on Wii at launch, regardless of the MSRP. If it turns out to be $150 for the console, that's 2 games + an accessory or 2. Launching at $150 could really help them get into homes of non-gamers.

I would imagine they'd pack it with a game or two and a controller and sell it for $250.

That's what I would do.

That's what Jesus would do.
Hell I'd buy one for my bedroom, and one for the living room, and hell maybe one for the bathroom too!
One can never have too many Wiis in the bathroom.

I really don't think that it'll be that inexpensive, but like everyone else is saying - If Nintendo can actually pull it off at that price, I'm getting one at launch. No bullshit.
I kinda hope it's $249 so I can see that picture of SMMM with his hand cut off.
Are we guaranteed a picture?

I doubt it, but god would Ilove it. Especially if those specs "leaked" by Ubisoft were actually real.

Of course, I wouldn't get to watch Blue-Ray. I don't know if I could live with that
If it sells that cheap, I really COULD buy two for the pure sake of having sex with one of them.
ahh
i think you failed sex ed.
normally, two wiis shouldn't be having sex with each other.
It's $200. If it isn't, I slice my hand off and provide pics.
According to this, it could also be $149. Perhaps he should've chosen his words more carefully.

I think you failed CAG ed. You tried to associate Strell with normal behavior ;)

Hey, he can have sex with it all he wants, he just won't be able to MARRY it if Congress has its way :D.

Just for that, I'm going to buy a third one and have sex with it also.

It's spite of the best kind - man-machine luvin' spite.

Has any Nintendo console ever not been $199.99?

I have gotten every single one on launch day or very soon after and that is all I remember.

I don't know if that would be a very smart move for Nintendo...at $150, it seems bargain-bin quality (on a shallow level, obviously it's not but...).

That would be cool, but I'd be perfectly willing to pay $200.

I highly doubt the $149 price. If it were anywhere near that price it would be $149.99. I kid, I kid.

ANYway, it won't be below $199.99; no way in hell. Nintendo won't lose money on their console, and may even want to make money.

It's great, and yet if true, the chances of getting one not just at launch, but perhaps months afterwards could be damningly frustrating.
An early number was something like 6 mil in the first quarter, at $150 that 6 mil is spoken for several times over.
No, I was being literal. I really didn't know what QFT meant. Sorry to get OT here but are you being sarcastic here or not? What does Quoted for Truth mean? "Agreed?"..
Nope, I wasn't being sarcastic. And yep, it basically equates to agreed or 2nded, etc.

When I'm not sure on an acronym, I usually do a quick check at acronymfinder.com

First couple times I saw that one I thought it was Quite fucking True

if the damn thing launched that low it would be almost idiotic for people not to own one. There's so much good in the damn thing it even rivals the Bible.

I could see them doing this simply to get ontop as the #1 system . Then maybe the price would go up like a limited time it could be 150.

Everyday we see a different date rumor. Tomorrow I plan to start the thread with a secret source from inside the whitehouse. Let me began the research now. Magic 8 ball will the Wii come out Oct 26 ***** NO. Damn let's try this again. Magic 8 ball will the Wii come out Oct 13 ****** Maybe. There we have it folks Oct 13 is the release date? thread is ready to be started tomorrow...

The Wii has already been released.

It is only through the sheer radiating power of Reggie that we are unaware of this.

In fact, multitudes of you have already bought it and played it and masturbated all over it.

You think I'm lying. Oh how you wish it were so.
