I live in CA, and ever since I discovered the joy of shopping on Amazon.com, I rarely make visits to store for big purchase items (consoles). Then I read that Amazon fought New York and lost, New York can collect customer info on those who ordered items from amazon.com and tax them. I'm not sure if the bill is in effect but I read Dem's in CA want to do the same thing.

they say if a Dem wins when Arnold is gone the bill will likely pass and Amazon might stop it's contracts with California. I'm going to have to vote for Meg I guess, she's a republican and ebay opposes the bill. :hot: Seriously Amazon.com is cheaper then stores, no tax. :bomb:

I don't know how it works in CA, but here in Colorado, we are liable for the sales tax (as the consumer) whether or not it's collected by the retailer.

So, legally, I should be writing the state a big fat check every year for all the online purchases I've made that tax was not collected on.
why not call your law maker and let them know? It will be much more effective.
I'm a Dem, and CA is a heavily Democratic state, I swear they suck the juice out of everything possible. Our local news shows some of the bills, at one point they were selling the Hollywood sign but luckily some rich people saved it. It says legally CA can collect the tax on CA citizens who buy from amazon.com but the state has no method of collecting the information like NY does now.

I believe the rule here in my home state of PA is that if a store/website has a physical presence in the state, then that entity has to collect sales tax on purchases.:bomb:

It sucks, since Amazon has opened 2-3 or so warehouses(one within an hour's drive) within my state in the last 4-5 years. Before then I don't think they charged sales tax.

So do they charge you sales tax only on stuff you buy new from amazon itself, or do they also sock you on the third party order you make from the guy in Colorado? I'm seen some sellers on Amazon with the disclaimer that they won't sell to anybody in their own state, or some crap like that.

I haven't seen any Amazon sales tax yet here in MD--hmm, I wonder if anyone runs the state lines to avoid the tax...

Not a clue on any of it, since I think I've bought maybe ONE thing from Amazon. But I'm sure the third party guys would just claim they're taking the taxes to be in compliance and end up pocketing that like some do when gouging on shipping.
