Will you be able to use the PS3 guitar to play PS2 guitar heros?

So I'm going to buy GH3 for my PS3 and want to know if I buy any of the PS2 GHs, will I be able to play them with the PS3 guitar on my PS3?

Sorry if it is worded weird, wasn't exactly sure how to ask it.

I saw two different spins on this issue yesterday.

EB Games/Gamestop says that you can not play any of the GH games on the PS3.

Red Octane (as of early September) said you can play GH 1 with the new PS3 guitar and there won't be any problems. You can play GH2/GH80's, but the hammer ons/pull offs, tilt, and whammy will be off, and probably won't work correctly.

I was really hoping that GH3 would solve the problems, but it doesn't look like it's going to do that. I planned on getting GH3 just for the additional guitar for Rock Band so I'd have something for a bass. Harmonix hasn't said anything about their guitar for Rock Band, but possibly that might be able to give you full use of all GH titles.

Since you can't properly play GH1&GH2 on PS3, I'd assume that Red Octane plans to package the old songs as downloads, like what they did for GH2 on 360.

Red Octane themselves recently changed their tune (get it? haha!). They confirmed that the PS3 guitar WILL NOT work with any previous version of Guitar Hero.

I was specifically planning on getting the PS3 bundle for this very reason, even though I already had the 360 GH2 setup. I changed my tune when I found this out. Seems like nobody cares enough about PS3 yet to go the extra mile for it...including Sony, who could probably have coaxed the hardware designers with the right incentives.
Ugh. I'd like to read a technical explanation as to why they won't work at all.
Because technically if you could use your old GH games you wouldn't re-pay for the digital download version. I'd be willing to bet anything that's the only reason the older ones don't work.

Originally I wasn't planning getting GH3 at all because of their ridiculous pricing and need to increase the price at every turn. Then I bought a PS3 and decided I could justify it if I could use the new guitar and the backward compatability to play the first GH. Now that I know I can't do that I'm not even going to bother buying it at all.

Not only that but why couldn't they have gone the extra mile and taken out the need for the dongle on the PS3? I mean hell if Microsoft's notorious "we're not opening up the wireless tech" can be worked out, why not on PS3?

the reason is simple. they want you to buy new guitars. then after you buy the dongled wired guitars that are made for the ps2 as well, they'll sell you the wireless bluetooth ones made just for ps3. Remember back in the day they had the 1.44 mb 3.5" diskettes and the cheaper 750kb ones and they were basically the same disk just the 1.44mb had a hole in them? you paid 3 bucks for the extra hole when you could have just drilled it yourself. This is why people need piracy. these companies just love to screw the consumer.

I'd believe that more if
1) there weren't ample PS2 controller adapters that all work poorly, if at all, with the PS2 guitars, or
2) Activision actually followed through with GH1/2/80's DLC on the 360.

Do you know any specifically that work with the PS2 Guitars? The Pelican one on Gamestop's site has reviews of it not working with them. I'm actually looking for one that works with the Cobalt Flux dance pad (Pelican doesn't) so I thought if one works with the PS2 Guitar, it might work with a Cobalt Flux
Here is 1Up's take on the guitar compatibility issue:

According to their report, you CAN use the GHIII controller for GHII. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.
I think they're referring to the 360 version, but it's not clear.

Given that the makers of GHIII say specifically that it won't work, I tend to believe them over 1up, although I would love it if it did indeed work so I could fully retire the PS2.

Yeah, you are right Justin. Ignore my previous post. I read the IGN article posted on this matter and they pretty much confirmed everything that has been said before, no GH or GHII or PS3.

I think I might sell the old games. I'm sure they'll have the songs reappear as downloadable content.

Would the compatibility issue be something Sony could offer in a patch?

I'm torn between getting it for the PS2, since I have all the games, or just get it for the PS3 for the online and DLC.

It's the way Red Octane coded for the guitars that is making everything screwy. 3rd party guitars for the original GH didn't work on GHII without a new adapter. Rock Band guitars do not work for GHIII because Red Octane won't allow it.

Well, that sucks. Now I guess I hate Red Octane even more (I use to love them for publishing ITG and the original GH). I'm still going to buy GH III anyway for PS3.
there's no reason for all this damn incompatibility! DAMN!!!
I agree, but this Red Octane's way of milking this cash cow for all it's worth since this is about all they do anymore.

Yeah, ditto. I was hoping the official GHIII guitar would allow me to play the original PS2 GH games, but I guess that would be just greedy on my part.

I know that there's going to be some more Guitar Hero games... during the 360, Wii and Ps3 life time, but even if they're going to milk it.. at least... offer extra guitars from day one.

Since you can use the Xplorer on all the 360 GH games, maybe this won't be an issue down the road with future PS3 GH games. It just sucks that I can't play my older games without breaking out the PS2.

I think it sucks because they I don't have the previous games, and I don't have my PS2 any more.

And now they release games 1 and 2 as a compilation for PS2... why the heck don't they release it for PS3 at the same time? If they want to milk the cash cow, you'd think they'd do that...

Now I have to wait and wait for DLC, and dag nabbit, I just want to play Sweet Child of Mine! :p

I tried putting the GH1 disc in the PS3 tonight, and the Les Paul "dongle" doesn't light up as soon as you start up the PS2 disc. It won't turn on at all. fuckin' hell, man.
