wireless network help

CAGiversary!
Hey I was wondering if any of you guys could help me with this problem. I set up a wireless network i nmy house with a Netgear WGR614 router and a netgear WG311 card in my PC. It seems to be working ok, but sometimes I leave my ocmputer and com eback and I"m not connected to the Internet anymore, I'm still connected to th enetwork and the wizard says 'connected to router' but I'm not on the net. Usually I just go click on 'find a network' then enter my password, and stuff and wait for it to reestablish a connection then I'm online. Does anyone know how to fix it so I won't keep dropping net access? Thanks for any help.

I don't understand what you're trying to say.

You lose the wireless connection between the PC and the router.

OR

Your router loses it's connection to the internet.

Which is it?

BTW a little more info would help. What OS? Cable or DSL?

Help us to help you.

Windows should have an option to automatically connect to perferred networks. It sounds to me like you don't have any networks in that list so it drops the network everytime it times out or something. I'd check that out first.

I think the netgear router setting defaults to a '5 minute idle time before disconnect from the internet'. It's in the Basic Setup in the router menu. Put it to 999 minutes or 0 minute.

It might be a power configuration on your laptop to turn off wifi to save battery. Go into your wifi options and look for where it says "connect using." On the right is the configure button, click it. Go the the last tab that says "Power Management" and uncheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn of this device to save power."

Hope that helps, if not......><

Edit: Try what SOSTrooper suggested first. I use a Linksys router so that hasn't happened to me.

No, I'm still connected to the router but it loses connection the the internet. I'm running an XP professional desktop with SBC Yahoo DSL.

NoRain, my network is in that list.

SOSTrooper, I couldn't find that option anywhere in the router menu.

Try uninstalling your card and then reinstalling it. My laptop has built in wireless and a couple of times I would be connected to the network, but couldn't get on the internet. I would go to my hardware menu and uninstall my network adapter. Then reset my computer and the computer would recognize the adapter as new hardware, reinstall it automatically and I'd be back on the internet.

It'll be the first thing I check if I have your problem.

SOS Trooper, I see whast you're talking about but I don't have to sing on to get to the Internet. It won't let me leave it blank, so I put in my primary sign-on for DSL and it wouldn't work.

BUT, I think I may have found the problem. The WPA key has a lifetime of 60 minutes, could this be why it's disconnecting? I tried to make the lifetime 0, it wouldn't let me, and the max is 256 minutes. So am I going to be disconnected every 256 minutes then? I'm probably going to call Support tonight and find out what's up. Thanks for all the help.
