Hey all. I suppose 'Shopping Discussion' is as a good a place to post this as any...
Anyway, I just wanted to alert people to a scam I fell victim too. I had noticed a charge now and then on my credit card statements; $9 each time to WLI*ShopperDiscount. I figured it to be something I didn't remember purchasing, and since the amount was so small, often forgot about it.
Fast forward to Sunday, when I filled up my gas tank. That was the last time I used my credit card, so imagine my surprise when I see another $9 charge the following Tuesday. So, I ended up looking this description up on Google and found that many people had been struck with random charges by this (or a similarly named WLI*________) in the amounts of $3, $9, or $10. So, I decided to call these people up.
The man on the phone explained that they 'protect your credit card' and offer discounts, and that I had signed up for this. I told him that I didn't, and he said he would cancel my account. However, I was not pleased with paying for this service I didn't even know about, and demanded a refund, so which he quickly agreed. I then asked how they got my information and how long it had been going on for. His response shocked me.
It had been going on since March...2005! And the company that sold them my info? Good old EBGames.com. I called and demanded the refund on Wednesday; it's now Friday, and I've been given a full refund.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my horror story, and alert everyone to check their CC and bank statements. Apparently EB isn't the only place that's in on this, as I also read about FTD and Joannes, among others. But I got stuck by EB, and I want to make sure other CAGs are aware of this. Here's hoping I'm the only jackass that didn't notice this
