Worth it to send back my 360?

My 360 is about 5 months old, and it is having serious problems. I am getting disc read errors all the time (esp. on GHII), and they occur randomly during games at least 3-5 times a day. I want to get it repaired, but I have heard all the horror stories about Microsoft CS. From personal experience, do you think it would be better if:

1) I called MS and had it repaired (hopefully for free since it should be under warranty)
2)Try exchanging it at MicroCenter (where I got my 360)
3)Try fixing it myself (LAST RESORT ONLY)

Any input is helpful.

Just call, have them send you the coffin, and get it over with :( It'll be about 2-4 weeks from when you call, to when you will be able ot play your [hopefully] repaired console...

Yes, it's worth getting it fixed. You shouldn't even have to ask, you can't enjoy the 360 when you are getting a DRE 3 - 5 times a day.

Each time you have to send it in to M$, they include a free month of XBL and extend your warranty for another year. It sucks that it takes 3 weeks, but in the long run I guess it's worth it. Though for me... not so much. I got the dreaded 3 red lights, sent the system in, waited 3 weeks to get a replacement console. Turns out the network port on the one they sent back to me didn't work right away, so I had to turn around and send it right back. I would have gotten it back today had I been home when UPS came by. At any rate 6 weeks without it has, well, sucked (not to mention having had to miss the majority of the Halo 3 beta).

But, I'm sure all will be peachy this time around... it better be....

Actually, if you read through xbox.com you will see that your console is covered for a year. It will be repaired for free during that year, but your warranty isn't extended. If you have your console repaired and it isn't under warranty, you pay the repair costs, but they give you another years warranty...

I'm just going by what the customer service rep told me when I called about my 360 for the second time. She said that each time I have to send in my box within the warranty it extends it to a year from that time. It's not like it stacks... so, I sent the 360 mid-May, so the warranty goes until mid-May of '08.

let's hope your rep is right. The one I spoke to said they give you 90 days, unless your current warranty is longer in which case you keep your current.

Exactly. Thats also what the site says. I too thought it was extended a full year, but thats only if you are out of warranty :| I have a feeling MS is going to be under fire sometime this year with the number of 360's failing.

Ok, now I need to know one more thing. It says on xbox.com that I need a receipt to prove my xbox is within warranty, but I don't thing I still have it (I got it as a gift). Is there some way to get proof of purchase from Microcenter for my 360?

Did you register your console around the same time you bought it? If so, that should be on MS's record. If not, tell them a rough estimate of when you bought it and where and see if they will accept that. I know stores hate having to try and find a persons receipt...

What's the manufactured on date on the back of you 360? If it's less than a year ago you should be OK without a reciept.

just get it repaired, i had mine repaired twice all ready. the first time it was under warranty. the second time it broke it was out of warranty and out of the blue MS extends the warranty to 1 year.

not trying to hijack your thread but does anyone know if i will be able to still buy the 2 year warranty. after my system messed up for the second time i tried to buy the warranty however i couldnt due to the fact that i had to buy it while it was still under warranty. but since the warranty has be extended to a year i should be able to now right?

I now have something new to add. MicroCenter sent me a copy of the receipt, and I found out that when my parents got it, they bought a one-year warranty (parents...). I guess this means I could take it into Micro Center and get a replacement. I just need to know something. If I do get a new console, will I be able to get back all my XBLA games? (I hear that XBLA games are tied to the console, not the HDD).

Just take off your hard drive before you return it. At worst, they'll just take the hard drive out of the new system's box and you'll be on your way. You'll still have all your saves and XBLA games. Even if you don't keep the hard drive, you can redownload the XBLA games.

In-store warranties are the way to do it... none of this "waiting two weeks or more only to get a refurb" bullshit.

I'm in the same position as you right now...just sent my 360 to the repair center in Texas, so hopefully it gets fixed.

I'm thinking of buying the extended warranty on my other 360 as well. I think it's well worth it since I didn't purchase an extended warranty at Microcenter.
