Would buying a refurbished PS2 be a wise move?

All models of the PS2 have a high failure rate. Not just the newer ones. Depending on where you get it from. If you want to buy one then the cheaper the better as the lifespan of the PS2's are pretty short. I'm on my 4th model. It payed for me to get the warranty.

Hell no! Stay away from refurbished PS2's and Xbox's. Especially the PS2's. Buy the newer one's that have the little "+" on the corner. Those have the newer parts in it but with a PS2 I always recommend a warranty.

I think I'm the only one that never had a sony system break. I've had ps2 since launch, and psone since about a year after its launch. The only system that ever broke was my 32x, but I just bought a new one on clearance for like 15 bucks. My nintendo almost broke, it took me months to figure out I just switched the channel from 3 to 4 on the back of the system (I was about 8 when this happened).

I have a launch PS2 and I'm not going to jinx it by talking about it. I must say though, the newer models are SO much more quiet. Better dvd drive, better fans, less vibration, and therefore less noise.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about.

I've had a refurbed Xbox for 2 years and its worked perfectly.

A refurb for anything electronic is FINE because the company gets the defective product and FIXES IT to be almost brand new.

To the OP, get the refurb if it saves you money - it's the same thing as getting a brand new one.

nothing is wrong with them

I had a ps2 that would not go online I called up and exchanged it with one that did and he said that its refurbished and that all it means is that something went wrong for whatever reason they cleaned it up and fixed it the problem.

So in my opinion that would be better

The broken thing was fixed or a new laser was put in or whatever

If you can get one for $99 at EB. I don't know if that deal is still going on, though.

No, you don't know what you're talking about. I've worked at GayStop for close to three years before I quit and every single refurbished PS2 we sold came back within a 3 month span. Xboxes are a little bit better mainly because Xboxes aren't as faulty as a PS2 to begin with. For the Xbox I would say 1 out of every 4 would come back defective. With refurbished systems remember that they are not considered "used" items so they will not be covered under the stores used policy (usually 90 days). the store will only cover them for 7 days unless a warranty is purchased.

Launch PS2 were built better than the second generation of PS2s because in the second generation of PS2s they changed a bunch of stuff inside to save money on the production, which basically means cheaper parts. That's why Sony will repair them for free now.

-GameCube: I would say definitely get a refurbished one
-Xbox: I would say if saving the 20 - 50 dollars from getting a new one is that important then go for it just make sure you ask about the return policy first.
-PS2: No Way. That's it. Just stay away from it.

I always recommend buying a used system though. Those are usually tested before they have been traded in and usually have a 90 day warranty off the bat. It's not like a refurbished one is new, it was used at one point but it broke. A used one is one that was used at one point but it didn't break. Go ahead and buy the refurb PS2 and I'll be looking forward to your post about how your refurb PS2 is broken and you can't return it.

The fact that you had to ask before buying already says that you don't want to buy it.

It will play any game no matter how sratched up it is. I own 96 PS2 games and they all worked. Only one time ever, a game froze up, and it happened to be a game from Blockbuster, that truly was broken. I've moved my PS2 every few weeks from college to home, and still works great. I'll add too that I've played my PS2 for 450 days straight, and still working good. The only gripe I have with my PS2 is, CD based games play loudly, but the disc is spinning fast, so it's understandable.

My Xbox on the other hand, is a piece of crap. I've had to send that thing in for repairs several times, and it still barely works. I really hate it how my Xbox will sometimes not even play brand new games I get. Forget about playing a game with a few scratches in my Xbox. Mine was a launch Xbox manufactured on 10/31/01, so it has the Thompson Drive. There's no way I'm buying another Xbox since all my data saves are on my HD, and Xbox is my least favorite console this generation.

As for my GC, works great, but occassionally it freezes and one time it gave me an error.

I have bought other refurbrished things from Sony, without problems, but I'd just buy a new PS2, since it really isn't much more. The PS2 having a high failure rate is very false. If any console has problems, it's Xbox. I've known more Xbox owners have trouble than PS2 owners. Sony makes the best products.

I bought a used ps2 and it eventually gave me DRE's. It was so easy to send in to sony and get fixed, that i have bought 3 more(DRE PS2's and sent them in for free fix) for cheap to give to friends as gifts.
