Wow. Did anyone watch CSI Miami's "GAMER" episode?

I hate to beat a dead horse, especially in regards to unfair stereotypes toward the videogame culture, but tonight's episode of CSI Miami just has me shaking my head.
The episode was about a group of college students who take a video game called "Urban Hellraisers" to a "whole new level. The game itself is clearly and shamelessly based off of grand theft auto, right down to the boxart (they even used a Ps2 case). The game itself is comical in that it's an amalgamation of every idiotic misconception about videogames ever invented from extra bonuses for rape right down the the booming voice over that delcares "100 points, 1000 points! You are dead! Shoot to kill! Fire fire!" and the linear progression of "levels".
The criminals are stereotyped "GEN Y" kids who are into rock music and wear those tennis shoes that have wheels on them ("heelies?") while spitting out a bunch of "hip" lingo that the network apparently thinks we use. They are shown as having no concept of reality and refer to everything in terms of points. There is also a caricture of a scumbag game developer who was in on it to help gain publicity for the game ("The gaming business is competitve. I needed an edge!").
One of the CSI guys has to "play the game" to find out what the criminals will do next, and in doing so there are a lot of shots of him being disgusted. Sadly, the thing that made me most frustrated about this aspect was the simple fact that the guy sucked at the game.
A few of the more absurd and enrgaing moments were:
1. During an interrogation, a suspect(who wasn't part of the crime spree) said, and I quote "No man, I wouldn't do that. I'm not one of those guys you're looking for. I'm no gamer!"

I am a big fan of this show, but there not the only crime show to do this. I remember Law and order SVU had an episode with a similar premise. Another CSI:Miami episode also had something like this but it involved Tony Hawk getting murdered by a game producer/geek.
lol I'm gonna have to look for a rerun, it sounds so bad it ends up being comical.
I suggest you tivo that sumbitch. The guy who played for 70 hrs died of RENAL FAILURE for Christ's sake. Man, fucking 'A'.

i saw a commercial for that during the raiders game, thats pretty much how i figured it would be, glad i dont watch that show

Renal failure? He should at least have had his heart explode from all the energy drinks.

Just think

...the other CSI episodes are probably just as inaccurate. I bet if you talked to a real investigator, he/she'd tell you that CSI is completely wrong.

I like the CSI Vegas/Miami/New York series and all but this episode was just awful awful. I'm not saying because I'm offended at how they portrayed gamers but the episode in general was just awful. It was just too unrealistic. The writer looked like he stole the plot right out of the movie Jackie Chan's New Police Story. But at least the main villian in New Police Story had a lot of problems beyond gaming.

Killer Instinct on Fox did a similar episode a few weeks back. They didn't butcher it too badly.

My girlfriend loves CSI, and always makes me watch it. It was easily the cheesy shit I've seen on T.V. in a while. Uh oh, look out, the video game designer is really a major illegal gun trafficer!

thank got the only TV I watch is either public TV, Late Night with Conan O'brian, and The Office (US version). Saddly, someone had this on in my house and I caught the end... jeeze was it overgenralizing.

I think that this frustrated you the most was the funniest part of your post to me

heh. we watch the exact same two shows, and after that i turn off my tv.

I just saw it and al lthe points you made are absolutley right. They always say gamer in such a bad tone. The whole show is based on how everything is about the score which is a game stereotype. This episode is just plain insulting to gamers and the gaming industry.

Also I did not see one stereotypical fat gamer, I mean come on theres tons of those.

I think you guys should download it just for the heck of it. It's worth seeing how the uneducated public generalizes gamers.

OMG, my parent's favorite fucking show is CSI.

I play video games. I own a copy of Grand Theft Auto. After they see this episode, I'm never going to hear the end of it, especially since they believe way too much of what they see on TV and in movies to be TRUE.
csi sucks anyways. the only crime show i watch is mcguyver.
*thumbs up*

And you know, now I think I'm going to stick to watching McGuyver only when it comes to crime shows. Because at least most people know that McGuyver is inaccurate fantasy!

This was really really bad. I can't believe someone even OKed the script. There were 5 college aged students who only met online who all decided exactly at the same time to act out GTA in real life - it was so bad it was good because it was so funny.

I saw this episode. I'm sorry, but how can anyone possibly take this seriously? The problem this time around isn't with how gamers are being portrayed, it's the fact that gamers nowadays absolutely love to victimize themselves and take any opportunity to do so.

Law & Order shows have been exaggerated ever since the damned things started, what, 15 years ago? At this point, most people are aware that CSI, especially CSI Miami, isn't the most realistic show. Yeah, it has some nifty science, but the cases are just too far-fetched to really believe. Why is it that people are able to distinguish that MacGuyver as being unrealistic but not CSI? It's not like the shows are worlds apart, when you boil it down.

I remember seeing one episode of CSI where a baseball player killed some woman by throwing a ball at her really hard (he had a 95 mph fastball or something). I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty sure the American people don't see baseball players as men that use their strength to break their way into rooms and such.

And I don't think the American people think gamers wear sneakers that turn into rollerskates and go around robbing banks. Don't worry that Mommy and Daddy are going to flip their shit and take away your PS2; people aren't as stupid as we'd like to think. Worry about the beaurocracy that's working towards passing actual legislation that limits our fun.

*Hugs MacGuyver Season dvds even though they have crappy image quality and no special features*

^5. McGuyver is an amazing show. I heard rumors of a new McGuyver show, but I do not know what happened to it.

I watched it and it was pretty funny......The thing that kills me is how they portray the games still. At least make it look like a playable game and not something that some douche bag with no knowledge of games put together. I kind of liked it when the jock said, " I'm no gamer". He said it like gamer's were dangerous and scary. Pretty stupid but made me laugh. Worth checking out for a kick.
The episode of L&O:SVU that did a "gamer's that kill" episode was much better. Still a bullshit representation of the game, but much better script. SVU is a show that I actually enjoy, though. Man, that shit was great when he said, "I'm no gamer". Worth checking out for that scene alone. Comedy.
