I hate to beat a dead horse, especially in regards to unfair stereotypes toward the videogame culture, but tonight's episode of CSI Miami just has me shaking my head.
The episode was about a group of college students who take a video game called "Urban Hellraisers" to a "whole new level. The game itself is clearly and shamelessly based off of grand theft auto, right down to the boxart (they even used a Ps2 case). The game itself is comical in that it's an amalgamation of every idiotic misconception about videogames ever invented from extra bonuses for rape right down the the booming voice over that delcares "100 points, 1000 points! You are dead! Shoot to kill! Fire fire!" and the linear progression of "levels".
The criminals are stereotyped "GEN Y" kids who are into rock music and wear those tennis shoes that have wheels on them ("heelies?") while spitting out a bunch of "hip" lingo that the network apparently thinks we use. They are shown as having no concept of reality and refer to everything in terms of points. There is also a caricture of a scumbag game developer who was in on it to help gain publicity for the game ("The gaming business is competitve. I needed an edge!").
One of the CSI guys has to "play the game" to find out what the criminals will do next, and in doing so there are a lot of shots of him being disgusted. Sadly, the thing that made me most frustrated about this aspect was the simple fact that the guy sucked at the game.
A few of the more absurd and enrgaing moments were:
1. During an interrogation, a suspect(who wasn't part of the crime spree) said, and I quote "No man, I wouldn't do that. I'm not one of those guys you're looking for. I'm no gamer!"
