WTF? Oblivion on PSP but not Wii?

CAGiversary!
The latest EGM says that Bethesda is planning to release Oblivion on the PSP. What gives? With them dissin the Wii for not being powerful enough to run something like Oblivion, but isn't it more powerful than the PSP?

Bethesda: +5 shit points

(Not that I particularly need Oblivion since I have it for PC, but still... it's the principal here)

Thanks for the links. I haven't seen anything on this game before. It actually looks pretty good for the PSP, although it will take place inside a dungeon of course.

It's pretty sad that the PSP version of Oblivion will be confined to dungeons. That really kind of defeaters the purpose of the Elder Scrolls games.
It's too bad they didn't get a modified version of the Morrowind engine running on the PSP so they could do a full ES game. That would be a system seller for me.

I thought this thread was in reference to this, but I see it's not. So here's what Bethesda has to say on the subject:

"This time around we did Oblivion and again we designed a game that's really going to push some limits and would do the things we thought next-gen consoles might be able to do. When 360 dev kits were available, we did it on them because it was available. It's not really going to run on a Wii for example, but if it could we would put it there. Our philosophy is to make a game and make it available to as many people as possible. We're not looking to limit who can play a game. We want to make something that's fun and we want as many people as possible to play it." -- Bethesda public relations head Pete Hines

I wouldn't care if there was no oblivion for the Wii, but why the fuckaren't they considering updating morrowind? Think of it this way, add in a new combat system sorta like oblivion, some Wiimote controll and a extra brand new expansion pack and I would gladly shell out the $50 for it.

Morrowind was the third chapter in the Elder Scrolls series. Oblivion is the fourth. The chances of revisiting Morrowind now are nil.

That's a great idea. It would be a cheap and easy port, and some extra content and Oblivion style combat would make me buy it again for $50.

Morrowind appeared on the Xbox because that was the only machien of that generation to offer sufficient RAM and a hard drive. The Wii has the RAM but lacks the GPU functions Morrowind used heavily. Some of those can be simulated on the Wii in software but only by trading off a lot of throughput for other operations. Very few developers outside of Factor 5 have ever managed to do it well.

That still doesn't get past the need for a hard drive. The game fully used the 1GB cache and generated very big save files. A 2GB or greater SD card could potentially be used but that would make for a difficult marketing problem to run a game that would be six years old by the time it reached stores.

It just isn't going to happen. Bethesda is more likely to create a new edition using the Oblivion platform to reach the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 markets.

Your right I forgot about Morrownd caching data on the hard drive and creating huge save files. I guess it would take too much work to bring to the Wii.
Still, a Morrowind mod for Oblivion would be pretty cool. One of the major things I hated about Morrowind was the combat system.
