Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

I'm tempted to pick up the handsome collection for $13 at best buy or $15 digital if it does go on sale but I have the BC versions I could play...I may just pick up the remaster of the first one depending on the price and start from the beginning on X1 versions.

I’m actually really liking Operencia so far. Combat is far more interesting than most of these types of games with lots of variation, different status effects and strategy involved. Nice easy to understand in-depth statistical displays and enjoy the artwork as well.

Have to agree with the positive reviews it’s been getting (82 currently on Metacritic). Only thing I don’t like is the one-rails movement but sure I’ll get used to it.
Agreed. It's very good for those interested in the genre. The weird free look for a grid movement game and the lack of turn-based movement are the only knocks I have for it.

Once I got through the tutorial, it was smooth sailing for me. I made a video of the tutorial and first dungeon for those that want to see it in action.

Finally a chronicle of what was going on at Bioware during Anthem's development, including confirmation that Dragon Age 4 was completely cancelled and restarted from scratch. This somehow sounds worse than everything that happened at Bungie during Destiny 1's development, and seemingly confirms suspicions that at least the leads at the studio weren't looking at the landscape to learn from the mistakes of Destiny and The Division. Apparently the gameplay was originally going to be focused primarily on survival when leaving the safe areas rather than grinding for loot, which would put it MUCH more in line with the multiplayer modes from their previous games. Flight was not considered a core mechanic in full for much longer than you would expect.

The read is long as hell but pretty interesting. Definitely worth it if you have even a passing interest in the game, Bioware, or the industry.

Jason Schreier and Kotaku are quietly killing it in terms of quality journalism that is also game-related. Dude has broken some big stories, and it puts increasingly clickbait sites like Polygon to shame.

Yeah, I still dislike Kotaku in general and some of Schreier's opinions on stuff, but the quality of his objective coverage on topics like this are unrivaled in the industry. I'm hoping he does a piece on Destiny 2 and the build up to the Activision split but I think he's probably saving it for his upcoming book. I'd love something on Fallout 76 as well.

Bioware/EA did post a statement in response to the article. I don't really think their reasoning holds up, as I don't really feel like Schreier was shitting on any specific individuals in the article. He does name some people but just talks about what their positions were mostly. There is no way they would have actually contributed to an article that painted their process in such a negative light.

Update...
The cauliflower pizza crust was pretty good. A little gritty texture wise but not bad.
Was this the Costco ones? Yeah, can confirm they are pretty okay but the trade off of me eating an entire pizza of cauliflower because they don't fill me up as well vs half a regular pizza is probably ...not good..? ::shrug::

The best thing about their response is that they had it posted before the article was ever published. They were apparently ready to refute an article that they never had a chance to read.

Yeah, looking a bit deeper it seems like they posted it within two minutes of going live and Schreier only sent them bullet points ahead of publishing, no way did they read such a long article before responding.

It seems pretty fishy over on the official Reddit as well. You can have two threads stickied on any given Reddit, and their mods chose to have a throwaway daily discussion, and the heavily down-voted response to the article, but not the article in question. EA has been known to influence the Reddits of their games in the past. Apex Legends dumped the creator of the sub-Reddit when it was proven he had been flown out to Respawn and give free stuff multiple times.

Not to mention the response they posted is the first communication in a couple of weeks, when major flaws have been found during this period and there is still not an update for their roadmap.

OT but I just saw the run time for Avengers: Endgame is 3 hours 2 min. fuck yeah.
Wow I don't even know if I can plan for that! There's a bathroom trip for sure in there considering I always get a large soda with my popcorn. Infinity War was a challenge, but Endgame sounds like I'll have a better chance at speed running Ninja Gaiden on the hardest difficulty in a single life than avoiding a bathroom run mid-movie.

I mean, the plus is I'll still have 3 hours of movie after missing those 2 minutes.

Just save yourself the trip and get a diaper.

You'll have the cup your soda came in.

you've never peed in a bottle and sat it on your nightstand til morning? Me neither

A movie this long SHOULD have an intermission.

In other news, the Borderlands 3 cover art is possibly and most likely the coolest ever made.

I also realized recently that Playstation blue looks so much better with literally ever single video game cover than Xbox green.

The endgame runtime is why more cinemas need to embrace my side restroom idea. Each cinema screen has a men’s and women’s restroom on the side where the movie is projected into while using. All they have to do is clear post movie to prevent hideaways.

Good read. Definitely suggest reading if you had a passing look at Anthem.

Just remember that movie runtimes include credits, and you know this one is going to have a credit sequence of at least 30 minutes. Plenty of time for any sort of bathroom break you find yourself in. Plus, what could they POSSIBLY tease after these credits? Avengers vs. X-Men? Hahaha...no way...not likely...maybe...please?

I would imagine a good pick up after Captain Marvel and the end of this MCU storyline would be Secret Invasion.

Secret Wars would be cool though.

The Kotaku piece on Anthem led me to read their story in Mass Effect Andromeda, and it seems like a common problem a lot of EA games have these days is the required use of Frostbite. The EA Sports titles struggled in their initial iterations on Frostbite, but at least Madden and FIFA have so many casual fans who only want to play as their favorite teams that a wonky engine won’t deter them from buying next years game.

I remember how terrible Rory McIlroy PGA was with Frostbite, shame that pretty much killed the series.

It's been a known problem but the new article is the first I've heard of EA actively hurting teams by taking away their devs that are best with the engine, and the lower priority given to the games that sell lower. It makes some kind of sense from a business standpoint, but it's borderline sabotage on teams that clearly aren't in a good place.

I'll be curious to see what happens with EA if their CEO ever retires since he makes so many massive decisions like the engine thing, but by that point I don't really see what devs will be left.

I believe Soderlünd (the exec who liked Anthem's flying) directed the use of Frostbite, and he left in Nov. 18.

I honestly don’t think there’s anything wrong with the engine (at least as far as Anthem is concerned). Graphics and physics from Frostbite are probably the best part of Anthem. It looks great and plays well with the flight mechanics, movement, etc.

It’s everything else in the game design that has nothing to do with the graphics/physics engine — boring missions, lack of weapon variety, story that is engaging, meaningless progression, etc. All of those are decisions outside of the graphics engine.

There were a couple guys from DICE that got high up on the boards and management and hence the Frostbite engine on everything, man I forgot how they basically killed off their cash cow Golf game switching to that engine after "darthfracas" brought it up, that game was awful, and they delayed it a full year to work out the engine.

Whoop, I always forget he and Wilson are two different people. I get the impression the both need to be gone for change to really happen.

Even after years of all the studios sharing Frostbite we're still hearing about issues with it, and how difficult it can be to use for anything but shooter games, and that it's very slow to implement changes. I don't think the trade off for games looking so good has been worth it looking at the last 5 or so years of output from EA. It probably didn't help that apparently the last THREE Bioware games decided to start from scratch an build all the non-FPS systems, reading that in the article really stood out to me since they said this was a big pain with Dragon Age Inquisition. It's clearly a hindrance, and it seems like they've been prioritizing the totally wrong things to the detriment of the games. That "make it unmemeable" order mentioned in the article is another example.

Yeah hard to work out a lot of that stuff just getting the thing to basically run, it does seem to be the common refrain from ex devs there though, headaches from the engine lead to no time to work on the little things. Didn't the first Destiny run into similar issues where if they wanted to move a "rock" 2 feet from one area to next to it, they had to wait overnight for a build to update just to do that? Game Engines be tricky.

Good point. Wasn’t thinking about it from that perspective of engine issues taking away time from the other parts of development.

Edit: and admittedly I hadn’t read the Kotaku article.
Was just going based on what I had played of Anthem

Can anyone recommend a cheap/free(gamepass) either platformer/rogue game to dip into? I guess I've never really played a "true" one and I'm too quick to judge them even though I've never really played one. I've seen people mention both enter the gungeon and extreme exorcism, so I googled them and immediately thought "wow these look bad" even though I have no right to say that having no experience with them.

Any suggestions would be nice. Looking for something (maybe even one of those?) somewhat similar or whatever someone deems worthy. Just not looking for the polished platformers (Unravel, Ori, etc.)

I thought there wasn't an expiration on the 3 months of GamePass from the MS Rewards 3 part Quest back in October thru December.  Just went to use it and it is gone from my rewards now.  Was there a corresponding email with a code?  Can't find that either if there was one.

Is Spelunky still on Game Pass? It's a popular roguelike platformer.

I feel what you're glossing over is the initial poster's childish and aggressive attitude out if the gate. If we want to use your beggar situation, it would be more like the beggar running up to people and screaming at them that because they work at X company that they're robbing him of working at Y company and they're ruining his life when it has nothing to do with where they work.

Also I have stated that digital games were sold to us as a cheaper alternative to physical, even new release. That has not happened. If you price check physical games when they have cheaper prices at various retailers, you can often find the digital game at shockingly higher prices. Of which this has been explained before and I'm sure other posters are quite tired of having to keep saying.

Honestly, why is there any kind of argument when the original starter of this was acting like a 6 year old when his profile says he's 47? There should be no more bs over this because all CAGs are here to find deals on their passionate hobby, regardless of format\console\genre, and not be attacked by a whiny man child with zero understanding of the very thing he's bitching about.
Yup. Good points. But we have to always keep in mind there's a defense force for anything & everything on the internet.... :)

Thanks for this. I think the worst part of this is the dismissive bullshit PR response from EA that was clearly pooped out without actually reading the article. One of the highlights: EA is attempting to undermine the report as an attack to "take down individuals". Shameful.

idk the price but I would say the most fun/replayability out of a rogue game I've had was Rogue Legacy. It's one of my favorite indies to come out.

The article makes it pretty clear that it was a problem on both sides, a lack of vision and leadership to really implement ideas, but also, frostbite made it slow and painful to add basic things the most developers expect to be present. Since it was internally-developed, there aren't robust tools like with Unreal Engine, when you license an engine, you get tech support from the creator of it. They had to keep scaling down their ideas from pre-production because the engine could not handle the things they wanted to do.

If you dig around, this is been a problem with every BioWare game being forced to use Frostbite, Dragon Age had to develop and implement all of the menus, inventory, and even third person cameras from scratch, and bugs could take a week to fix. Andromeda built off of that, but still had lots of the same problems. It really sounds like all the stuff they had to create from scratch is held together with duct tape.

EA wants to avoid licensing fees for third-party engines, but I bet that would still be cheaper than paying people to work on the same project for 7 years and then having it get a lukewarm reception.

Finished Extinction, spent less on it then I thought. Only took me 17 hours to finish, could have been less if I did not lose as much.

Did not 100% complete it but fishing the story was enough for me. Just got frustrating playing it, camera and gameplay just put me off too much to want to play again. It was annoying how when completing stages in the campaign that with the secondary objectives, you had to complete them in the same playthrough. The game only counts objectives completed from last playthrough (if you get 2 then next playthough you get 1, the game will show only 1 not 3 completed).

Now started Crypt of the NecroDancer, was not sure I would like this but so far I am.
