Hello fellow CAG. My 20 GB HDD has almost reached its memory space lately, therefore I have been looking into getting a cable in order to transfer my stuff. I checked Ebay and it seems that some deals include a CD as part of the kit that goes for a few more dollars than the kits with just the cable.

My question is: is that CD necessary for transferring memory from one HDD to another (i.e. 20 GB to 120 GB)?

Thanks and have a nice day. :)

If you plan on doing the transfer the easy way through your 360, the disc is absolutely necessary, and it must be a legit MS disc, not that shady black text on silver stuff.

Otherwise, if you plan on doing it through your computer, that software is downloadable for free. Just look up Xport 360 (the Datel version) or Xplorer360. Since this is the unofficial, unsupported, hacky, DIY method, you'd best do a lot of reading on the subject.

That official MS disc is why some auctions go for 2x-4x more than the illegitimate Hong Kong knockoff ones.

Also be mindful that the first edition or two of the MS disc was only for 20gb-->120gb transfers. Newer revisions now support the 60gb and 250gb drives.
One of the items on Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/HDD-Data-Migration-Transfer-Cable-for-XBOX-360_W0QQitemZ220484156074QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games_Accessories?hash=item3355e13aaa#ht_3924wt_939) says that the CD only runs on the PC and not the Xbox. How would that come in use during the data transfer then?
Oh, there are also the "fake" discs that look like that. That disc contains one of the aforementioned freely downloadable PC-based programs (and a driver for the cable maybe?). Essentially it allows you to browse your 360 HDD through your computer, copy files to your computer, then upload them to another hard drive.

Trust me, it's far from ideal and can become a pain in the ass real quickly. However, it does work most of the time, but doesn't work all the time. Seriously, it's not as straightforward as working with a normal external hard drive.

Personally, I would try calling Microsoft first and telling them you're upgrading. If they offer you the opportunity to buy a real transfer kit, it will be about 1/3 the price of a used one on eBay. I guess not just anyone can buy the real deal, so that's why they go for so much on the secondhand market.

Well people usually buy these off ebay cause they could get them so much cheaper. I recently upgraded my 360 HDD from 20GB to 120GB and I called MS to see how much they would be selling me the transfer kit for and that Indian guy from customer representative told me $35. I quickly went to ebay and I ended up buying an official one from someone for $18 including shipping. I saved myself $17 for the same exact thing MS is selling boy what a rip off.

I might be asking for a lot, but I would really appreciate it if someone could show me a picture of what the official kit looks like. I have spent the last hour searching on the web and each CD looks different! :bomb:

Thanks

I got my mother a 60GB 360 last year and called MS, told them I wanted to migrate my data from my old 20GB to the new 60GB (because, really, she's never going to use that much space) and the rep I talked to just sent me a transfer kit and CD no charge.

She also told me that the cable/disc combo were only good for one transfer. Which doesn't sound right at all, but I only needed the one, so it didn't make any difference to me if they'd put some weird electric voodoo on it.

Worth a shot, I guess.

I don't recommend the "Xport 360" product at all. I copied one 20GB to another 20GB. It took me so many retries to get it right; the software was unstable. Do not try to manage the data beyond that point. I deleted demos and such to free up space, but that space was not unallocated and could not recover until I formatted the drive via 360 (clear cache did not help).

Wow, $35? I was charged $13.xx when I told them I already had the first gen kit but needed to upgrade to the MW2 250gb HDD.

I also thought it was a mistake too, but there is no point in asking a person the same question when they barely speak english, so once he told me $35 I was in a state of shocked I told him "ok well thank you bye now" and I hunged up.
