Hey all..I was wondering what your opinions are on playing the xbox 360 off of a vga lcd monitor..I just moved into a new studio and would like to purchase a 19 or 20 inch LCD monitor since space is tight. How is the quality of microsofts vga cables? thanx

Lots of these threads have been popping up lately.

The first thing that always needs to be mentioned is that as of right now, the 360 only displays at 16:9 resolutions. Computer monitors have a 16:10 resolution, so youll either have a slightly stretched picture or black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

Looks fantastic. It's a really cheap way to get great quality "HD" without having to plug it into a POS standard def tv. I also recommend a 1080p monitor although the price might be getting close to a HDTV by then.

I was going to get an HDTV. Got an LCD digital widescreen monitor as a gift. Bought the VGA cords. Haven't thought about an HDTV since. It looks GREAT.

Any cheap widescreen will do. Can get a 19" for $100 on sale nowadays. Personally I'd shell out for an LCD HDTV, 19" is kinda small.
thanks for the replys, sorry i didn't use the search button..any suggestions on monitors?
I had nothing but good luck with my Samsung 19" widescreen.

The bonus being that they are so cheap.

Would it also work for a notebook? Mine has HDMI and VGA outputs, and I have in the past used both to connect to televisions with no problems.

what model do you have?

I run it off my Samsung 204b I dont notice any picture stretching. Everything looks fine to me. I dont remember offhand what resolution its running but I think its 1280x1024.

I run mine off a 20" Samsung Widescreen LCD, and it's a beauty. I got it for $250 off of Newegg in March, price probably went down by now. I think I should've gone for a 22".
I ended up going with the samsung 906bw..freakin incredible quality
Exact same one I just bought... Amazing isnt it? :D My res is set at 1280x1024 though. I thought it was supposed to be higher.

I play my 360 on a 19" Samsung. I forget the model #, but its fairly new (less than 1yr old) its the one with the 2ms response time, so theres no 'ghosting' effect from quick lateral movements.

It looks awesome, I have no problems with picture quality. My only gripe is that the games, as good as they look, just arent that immersive on a 19" screen. But thats not my monitors fault, its my fault for not buying a larger monitor! lol

I use the 360 on one of my 24" dell widescreen LCDs... it's wonderful, with full 1920x1080 res. I recommend seeing if you can spare the dough for 24"-ers. Otherwise you could do 720p with black bars all around on the 20" widescreens. They are half the price or something.

are you talking about 1280 res on your 360 or PC?? On the 360 im running at 1380 something..and on the pc 1440 x 900 @ 60hz

I have a PC with a 21" CRT monitor, plus a 32" LCD Samsung HDTV. I still prefer playing xbox 360 on the 21" CRT monitor rather than the 32" TV, even with the black bars top and bottom due to the xbox running in widescreen. For me it is just more comfortable on the eyes and the detail is better. Though maybe that is just because you can sit so much closer to PC monitor.

So my advice is to go with a VGA monitor. Even if it's not an LCD screen - also you can pick up a nice big CRT monitor dirt cheap these days from ebay. Find one in your locale though as most people people won't ship (or shipping will be very expensive).

Edit - just re-read first post - seems a CRT is out of the question anyway.

I have mine hooked up to a 226BW Samsung 22". This monitor comes with 2 Ports on it, DVI and VGA so you can have your computer and xbox plugged into it and just push a button to switch between them. At first I had the 360 on a older TV and it looked like shit, couldn't read the text in Dead Rising. Now the text is clear and the games are 10x better looking. I believe I am running 1280x768 on it and there is no stretching or black bars.

There's a chart at the bottom of this page with the resolutions:
