Xbox 360 vs. PS3: Fighting Games

qwikshake

CAGiversary!
As far as next-generation consoles go, which console do you think is going to be the choice console for fighting games?

After much thought, I have decided to purchase the Madcatz SFIV Fightstick Tournament Edition for Xbox 360. This is mainly motivated by my not owning a PS3, but I plan to buy one sometime near the end of 2010.

Regardless, from my personal observation, it seems that most current fighters, such as SFIV, SSFIIHDR, and SC4 are multi-platform (the upcoming Blazblue, MvC2, KOF12, and Tekken 6 are also multi-platform), so there does not seem to be much incentive to choose one over the other besides community-based reasons (for example, most of your friends own the PS3 version; or you don't want to worry about Xbox Live Gold expenses, so you choose the PS3 version which has free online play).

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Side-note:
This question came about while I was considering purchasing the PS3 version of the Madcatz SFIV Fightstick TE. I understand the PS3 has superior hardware compared to the 360, but with all these multi-platform games out, the PS3 versions of these games do not seem to differ too much from the 360 versions. The main reason I ask this question is that I don't want to dig myself too deep into the 360, missing out on anything the PS3 has to offer in the future.
Either way your going to want a Arcade stick.
Your sig is cunningly appropriate for this topic.

If you do get a PS3, might want to look into dual modding your stick.

But 360 is fine for fighters, I actually prefer the Xbox Live experience with most fighters.

dual modding? I am intruiged by this. I have a PS3 SE Fight Stick, and you are saying I can have someone mod it so it will work on 360 also?

From what I've read, dual modding is much easier on a 360 stick than PS3, due to Microsoft's "using some hefty security for controller identification"

maybe you should search the "Tech Talk" section of these forums for your specific case, because this page mainly helps with 360 sticks that want to be modded for PS3 compatibility.

Most people prefer XBox Live Service over the PS Network but I don't own both systems to fully judge that. Just from what everyone else tells me.

System wise for fighting games, with Tekken coming to the 360 and when VF went Live for the 360? The PS3 isn't going to see many, if any, exclusive fighters on the PS3 outside of Tekken DR and Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm.

360 has: VF5 (with live abilities exclusive and some other misc stuff.), Battle Fantasia (US), Shin Sam Spirits/Sam Shodown 3d (timed exclusive?) and we were supposed to get a Maximum Impact 2.5 but it seems like it hasn't seen the light of day.

I'd give the slight edge to the 360 outside of Naruto.

Edit: I forgot dead or alive for the boobs!

Excellent points, Monsta Mack.
Thanks for your input, it will stave me off buying a PS3 for a while.
I can't really afford a PS3 at the moment anyway. By the end of 2010, I hope the price drops to $299 or the PS3 Slim (if the rumors are true) releases. By then, the PS3 will have its heavy hitters out (Last Guardian, GoW3, FF13 [single disc version] ... there are some games that can/should only be played on PS3).

Oh, and being on cheapass gamer buying a 360 will save you money in the short run, and long run if you plan on getting years of Live on the cheap ($30 or less). I don't know if It's just me but I see a lot more sales on 360 fighting games versus PS3 (VF5 kinda tanked sadly, but as a reward I saw it hit $20 pretty fast and it was $15 at many Circuit Cities before they went under as a B&M). Course your 360 could always RROD but you'll be set for repairs for another 3 years - when the 720 should be out by then.

Honestly if Live were for free now that I think about it I would be 100% 360. Since Live isn't free some will chose the PS3 just so they don't have to spend the extra cash. But granted I don't see many PS3 game sales.

It works both ways I suppose.

360 for me no question. My PS3 is a becoming a dust bunny. As for duel modding your stick, the link that was posted is poo, use this one.

Bomber is on these forums also under the name eastx. I'm pretty sure he does mods for people for a fee, but really with his guide its like he is hold your hand though out the mod, its not hard to do.

I think both systems are pretty much even in terms of fighting games. I started playing Street Fighter first and I played it on the SNES, so I'm used to that controller and I've never been a big fan of Arcade sticks. But because I prefer the controller I rather use the PS3 for my fighting games. If you get a PS3 with BC, then you'll still have access to some of the PS2 fighting game library. Street Fighter Anniversary (due to SFIII) is one of the best games to play imo, then there was Arcana Heart. People still play Tekken Tag at tournaments - to my surprise.

For me the advantages of PS3 is the controller and the library of PS2 and PS1 fighting games.

It's really hard to say, it seems like the majority of fighting games come out for both consoles. Even when a fighting game is console exclusive for a brief time, eventually they bring it over.

1-on-1 fighting games tend to be targeted at a serious gamer audience. For that kind of crowd, you will be able to pick up similar numbers on the 360 and PS3. So it makes sense for companies to bring the games to both platforms.

For fighting sticks, the PS3 has a slight edge. This is just because the PS3 has a cheaper controller solution. Controller convertors for the PS3 are widely available and innexpensive, so if you have a PS1 or PS2 controller, you can use it on the PS3. (instead of buying a new $55 PS3 controller) Modding a PS1 or PS2 pad to work with an arcade stick is pretty easy, and makes for a much less expensive fighting stick solution.

If someone suggest a system over an other because of pad then LOL. No one good takes you seriously if you say you play on pad. Once you get use to fighting sticks, you never go back. To be good, you need to perform certain techniques that are just too difficulty on a pad. SF4 focus-dash-cancels, Marvel vs Capcom 2 triangle jump, Guilty Gear instant air dash, Tekken evade dash, same with Virtua Fighter.

I come from the Street Fighter tournament community. Most of best players are on 360. The few that have both complains of lag on the PS3, the lack of opponent (SF HD remix), or good competition. I guess you get what you pay for.

What a very elitist attitude. You do understand about 90% of fighting game players are casual right? Not a lot of people who play them buy sticks read about the game or give a shit about them more than what goes on in their own living rooms with friends. So to those who offered their opinion on a system based on the controller their point is very valid.

And what Street Fighter tournament community are you talking about, SRK? Yeah about all of the FGT regs post there as well and have been for years, or EVO, Dev? Most of us have made it to those over the years as well. Or are you talking about local game stop bs. Really would like to know.

I've got both systems, and I stick with the 360 for fighters, mainly because of Live, but they somehow 'feel' smoother, which I can't explain.

Eventually, I think, I'll end up either getting an adapter to use my PS2 stick on the PS3, or modding it to dual, or just buy a damn PS3 stick. Hell, my PS2 still gets more use than my PS3, game-wise.

I apologize if I came off that way. Rereading what I wrote, it did. Once the op started mentioning joysticks, I assumed intermediate to advance level players, not casual players. If you must know, I've entered the past EVO and B5 tournies. Have won the Gamestop 'pad' SF4 R1 tourney as well. Though it had twice the amount of participant (~40) as other gamestop SF4 tourney, it felt pretty easy.

Off the top of my head, Sega's Virtual On is the only fighter that I can think of where high level pad players can compete with the best though at a slight advantage due to delay of analog controls. Many of the Japanese player on Virtual On are playing on pad (not much any other options). Playing from USA to Japan is almost lagless in that game, not to mention the insane amount of quality players. This game is not casual friendly.
