XBOX Drivers...

CAGiversary!
I had a thompson drive myself and never really had any DRE problems why do people say they're that bad what is the possiblity of buying a defect xbox by chance? since there are 3 drives thompson, phillips, and samsung...

Because people have no clue to what they are talking about. They read IGN and believe it. I have had my box from day 1 and have never had a problem with it.

Same here, XBox that, while not from day 1, is still the earliest version of the hardware, never had a problem.

I have two Thompson first gens, and neither have had any problems, *knock on wood*. I truly believe that it somewhat hit and miss as far as problematic ones go, and also on how you use them.

I honestly dont buy into the dre being caused by thompsons. Ive had my thompson since release and have had NO problems WHATSOEVER. Goodjob Microsoft on a quality system, IMO.

These are posts coming from individuals that didn't have DREs with their Thompson drives. I had two launch XB that had frequent DREs throughout its 2 and 1/2 year lifespan. In fact, some games (Tenchu, Unreal 2, Steel Battalion) couldn't go 30 seconds without freezing or giving the error. Every single person I personally know with a Thompson XB has an ungodly # of DREs. My other XBs (I have 6 LANd in my shop) that aren't Thompsons have rare occasional DREs. Sure, it could be a coincidence, but with stuff like that its hard not to believe the hype (especially when you see it firsthand more than you would like to). Thats also not to say that every Thompson craps out, but perhaps there is a higher percentage of specific drives that do. Its similar to having a first year redesign of a car. It might not be as refined as maybe three-four years into the design. Bottom line is, its easy for you guys to say that theres no problem with Thompsons, but you all might change your tune if you saw otherwise first hand.
jefferyjrose stated it very accurately. Of course, one of my launch PS2s has never to this day had more than two DREs. Of course, we all know thats probably blind luck!!!

I had a thompson...a day 1 xbox and it ran fine until it started loading slow and wouldnt read some discs...so I turned it in to EB and got a new one...Well I got a thompson agian...A month and a half later I started getting disc read errors and wouldnt turn on...I sent it in and got a preowned one back (they dont send you yours back...you get another preowned one that works) got a philips drive and runs fine...well almost they formatted something wrong so I cant get on LIVE...it thinks I have a mod chip or something...So I have to send it back for repairs...I hope I dont get another new one...actually Im gunna call them and ask for MINE back...well the one im sending in now...Im happy with my phillips (I can play CD-Rs :D )

I've had a PS2 since launch and it's had no problems. I have had to return 2 Xboxes within the 1 year I have had it, but now I finally got a Samsung and so far have had no problems.

BigNick they are sending me a box...I guess they really can send me a box to ship it in...To anyone thats sending in your xbox MAKE them send a box...they are full of $hit when they say that they cant...I was asked by the guy who deals with "escalated" calls and he asked me if THEY SENT ME A BOX...Sorry it just pisses me off how one person differs from another and even the manager was a dick and said he couldnt give me a box...small price to pay for the quality of xbox LIVE

Yeah I was really happy and suprised they were sending me one...He was one of the nicest and funniest people Ive delt with on those toll free tech help lines...

If you're the squeaky wheel, XB escalation will eventually hook you up with free shipping and repair, or at least drastically reduced repair prices. my last XB was getting DREs like crazy, and it took three call backs from the escalation department for them to ship and fix mine for free.

I had a Thomson in my first Xbox, and it crapped out after 2 years (DDE) I had the replacement warranty on it, and replaced it for a brand new one, that is unfortunately another Thomson. I am debating whether or not to take this new one back and try to get one with a Philips or Samsung drive--please see my post and poll in a recent thread! I want your opinions!! Thanks!

I bought my xbox the first day, I NEVER had a problem until about a month ago when I bought a 2004 sports game. The game played fine for the first day. I put it in again and played for 10 minutes and said dirty disc error and took it out and turned off the xbox and turned it back on and made LOUD sounds and tried the game again and it wouldn't play.

Dude, get a Samsung if you can. My Samsung XBs make no noise loading, and seem quicker (SEEMS to me). They don't sound like they're going to break while loading. As I see it, you have prior experience with Thompsons, so get a different one.
How can you tell if you have a Thomson, Samsung, or Philips. w/o opening the unit.
this question has been awnsered so many fooking times

Either put a new DVD drive in it, or trade it in at EB games--they will give you like $40 for a non-working system, and $80 for a working one, then use that money for a new or refurbished Xbox.

I got my Box last August, and I got a Samsung drive. I have really had no problems with it, except it would freeze if I tried to sleep in a certain bed in Morrowind GotYE (and that might just be a software bug).
My PS2 I got July of 2001, and in March it started giving me DRE. I sent it in to Sony, and within a week it was returned to me better then new.
Ive never had a problem with my Cube.
