So could you make a new account just for kicks and it's free? Sounds exciting.
No you get free Gold this weekend for existing accounts. If you sign up for a new account, you get 30 days free anyways. Most people have existing accounts though and want to keep using our name, gamerscore, etc.

However, remember that when you make new accounts through your Xbox 360, only the first three accounts you create will be given a free 30-day Xbox Live Gold trial.
So, if you make a fourth account through your Xbox 360 now, that account will be able to play for free this weekend.
I figure this might be good info for those of us who don't pay for Gold.
Free online play for the weekend.
Ends 12 pm EST on 1/31.
Silver accounts go ONLINE for free all the time.
I know what you mean though. It's the online multiplayer aspects of the service that are just for Gold memberships.
With Silver, you still get access to the Video and Game Marketplace. You get to earn achievements, have Friends Lists, private chat (1-to-1) and leaderboards for single-player game modes.
Kind of related but I think MS should make a Weekend Pass membership where you can get 52 weekends a year (Fridays thru Mondays) for $30 - $35. These Gold Weekends work out better than even the 48-hour trials.
