Xbox Live Summer 2009 Update Thread - Now Live!

KingBroly

CAGiversary!
Just like last fall, Microsoft is doing another Update preview program to those who sign up on their Connect Site. Here's some info from Major Nelson's site:

http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/07/20/xbox-360-system-update-preview-program.aspx

I am happy to announce that we’re doing an Xbox 360 System Update Preview program for our next release, and the opportunity to sign up is now available. Much like we did last year, you’ll need to visit the Microsoft Connect site from this link and sign in with your Windows LIVE ID that is connected to your Xbox LIVE Gamertag.

Once you do that, you need to fill out the "Xbox LIVE Update Preview Sign Up" survey in order to be considered for receiving the Preview System Update. We're asking a few questions about where you live, your home network, ISP connection and a few other pieces of information. We are looking for a good cross-section of our members in order to get the best feedback we can.

The Xbox team will then review all of the applications and if you’re selected we’ll send you an email notifying you of your acceptance in the program. A couple of points before you head off to register:
We’re looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good
This opportunity is open to all Xbox LIVE Members in regions where Xbox LIVE is available.
Just completing the survey does not automatically get you access to the Preview Program. We’ll be making final selections from the completed surveys and send you an email if you are selected.
While both box LIVE Gold and Silver members can sign up, Priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process.

If you are accepted, you'll hear from us in about a week. Make sure your information on Connect is updated so we can email you if you are accepted. Also, I’ll be sure to updated/edit if the program fills up.

Sign up for the Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program

Good luck!

7/28/2009 Update: First Round of e-mails are going out
Source: http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/07/28/preview-program-emails-are-being-sent-out.aspx

We’re in the process of sending notification emails out to the first group of people for the Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program. Please check your email (and spam folder…just in case) to see if you were selected. If we stay on schedule, those selected should receive a prompt to accept the update later today/tonight.

We’ll be sending another wave of notifications later this week, but we are holding registration open a bit longer to make sure everyone has a chance to participate. If you signed up but did not receive a mail yet, please head over to the connect site and review your information to make sure it is correct. I am being told that there are quite a few people did not properly complete the survey. If this is the first you are reading about the Preview Program, go ahead and sign up and you may be chosen to participate before the update is released on August 11th.

I'm torn. I absolutely HATE HATE HATE the NXE because it is so god damn slow. It's like trying to surf the internet on a Vista computer with only 512MB of RAM and NetZero dialup. On one hand I don't think it could possibly get worse and on the other hand I have zero faith in Microsoft's ability to improve it.

Signed up this afternoon. I guess I'm in the minority, as NXE has always run relatively smooth for me (knock wood), and I'm interested to try out some of the new features.

Interesting allegory. Especially since Microsoft's successor to Vista, Windows 7, is generally universally praised as much faster on the same hardware.

Given that one of the main improvements MS claims in this update is dashboard performance, I see little reason to doubt it.

I doubt their ability to add other features without creating new issues not their ability to fix existing issues.

I signed up as I am hoping this will show some speed improvements and fix the lag when going to the friends list from some games but I think it is more to test out Facebook, Silverlight and some of their other odds and ends more then anything.

I like the current dash fine aside from the speed issues others have mentioned. Hopefully MS isn't bullshitting us in regards to speed improvement.

I got in early last time, hopefully my luck will hold up.

I signed up....no email yet. I hope I get in. I've never taken part in a beta or early preview program. Plus, I'm a big fan of the NXE dash.....anxious for the Avatar marketplace.
I'm in. Any word when they'll be sending out invites?
The info page says
Those whom have been accepted into the Preview Program will be contacted by email by July 31, 2009

Signed up to day just to see if I get in. Hope it improves performance and not just add facebook or some other stupid App.
I thought Facebook and Twitter aren't supposed to come with this update.
They aren't. A later update should include both along with LastFM.

Yeah. All that extra integration stuff won't be here until Fall.

Fret not Linkin, he updated it with this.

"
Update: We've edited this post to clarify that while the preview is technically live, its access is currently limited to press and a select few "MVPs." Those of you lowly commoners chosen for the preview should be granted access in the next several days."

I'm pretty sure I got in. No email yet but the status on Microsoft Connect states I'm a participant. Guess I'll find out later when I get home. tomorrow when the emails go out.

Same here, hopefully participant means you have the update coming and not "you're somewhere on the big list of names that we're choosing from".

I think it says "participating" for everyone, although I'm not 100% on that. Why do I say that? Because it says it for me and as we all know, I officially have the worst luck on the planet.

Am I wrong in assuming that the Dashboard is supposed to get faster with this update? Because if it doesn't...I think my 360 is going to be bricked if I get in the program.

Yeah i just logged in and it says "Xbox LIVE Update Preview | Status: Participating". It probably just means we are participating in hoping to get it early. LOL. But i hope they give it out soon.

They're doing an early rollout again. They're calling it a preview program because "beta" wouldn't get that many people interested because people would be more fearful over their systems breaking.

So to answer you, it's new.

Site's been updated...from your dashboard click on "XBOX Live Update Preview" and if you got in you'll see this message:

Welcome to the Xbox LIVE Preview on Connect!

Congratulations! You’ve been accepted to the 2009 Xbox LIVE Update Preview.
Welcome, and we are glad that you are on board!
Along with other info.
