Xbox (original) issues on 1080i LCD HDTV...

pasteater

CAGiversary!
here's the setup
Xbox (original) plugged directly into my 1080i LCD HDTV via component cables. all HD setting are turned on in the Xbox. playing FIFA 07, which is in 720p.

here's the problem:
every game looks amazing (for an xbox). FIFA 07 as well...until the actual gameplay starts. the game gets 'blurry' when following the action, which is very hard to watch/play...almost headache causing, but crystal clear as soon as the action stops. again this is the only game that does this. any suggestions/tips/pointers?

Hmm, Does anyone have this game. I just bought it from Circuit City, since it's on sale this week. If it has problems at 720p, I may return it before opening it.

Op, have you tried limiting the output on your TV? Setting to just 480p or just 720p to see if it helps?

1) i did turn on only the 480p & 720p options on my Xbox, leaving hte 1080i option turned off. that's as far as i got.

2) i cannot figure out or find a way to set the resolution (if possible) for my tv...but i am currently researching that very option.

Hmm, never mind, I meant to limit the resolutions on your xbox. It seems you have already done that. I may just return my game, if nobody chimes in about their experience.
What TV do you have, and would classify it as ghosting?

What TV is this? What's it's native resolution?

What resolutions does the game support? Does it render them at that resolution, or just scale up?

Sounds like something-either the game, system, or TV is doing a bad job scaling the game or deinterlacing it.

If your TV's native resolution is 720p, stuff's going to look better at that resolution (if it has a REALLY good scaler like Sony's do, at best it would just look about the same at 1080i).

the tv i have:

http://www.hhgregg.com/ProductDetail.asp?SID=7F04FFA6E37D423CB8AF191798B2CE03&ProductID=16372#page

it's native 1080i. fifa 07 states 720p on the back.

and by blurring/ghosting ...imagine watching a home movie made on an old camcorder where the camera operator is moving around too quickly while filming...but once they finally stand friggin' still you can see what's going on and the temporary headache has subsided. basically it looks lke the camera can't keep up with the action and give you a clear picture.

Looks like a nice TV. I hope another CAG who has the game can add something. If nobody else says anything, I'll open my game tonight, and let you know if I experience the same problem. I have a 37 inch Sharp Aquos.

yeppers...tried game mode. it just 'enhances' the picture as far as i can tell. i tried a few other games (mostly 480p) and had no similar problems. playing fifa on a big widescreen was a big bonus/incentive to buying this tv.

it's just frustrating...grrr...

That TV is 720p native, so if the game is outputting 720p your TV should automatically switch to 720p. If it's switching to 1080i instead for some reason, check the game's settings. There's something wrong there if a 720p game is being displayed at 1080i by your TV.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean with your description of the problem. Is it ghosting? Is the camera not keeping up with the action?

It's an 8ms panel, so ghosting shouldn't be an issue. If the camera isn't keeping up, maybe it's just the game-like the graphic engine isn't fast enough, and is out of sync with the gameplay (I've never heard of that, but suppose it's possible a game was programmed like that).

Your TV is not a 1080i native resolution display. All LCDs are progressive scan by nature of the technology. Yours is 720p native. It can accept a 1080i signal, but it will be scaled to 720p, so you're better off giving it a 720p signal if it is available. Game mode improves image response times and probably enhances edges and contrast.

What you're describing sounds like interlacing artifacts.

this is pretty much exactly what is happening...now, what can be done about it in regaeds to my current xbox/lcd hdtv equation...?

anything at all?

btw...i really appreciate everyone's input.

If you're feeding the TV a progressive signal, you shouldn't be seeing interlacing artifacts because it isn't interlaced. There's no way to "set" the resolution of your TV. It takes the format of whatever your signal source is giving it.

let me know how things worked out...if at all.

as a follow-up...i tried every combination of resolution settings on my xbox...and the result stays the same.

i may try to take a video of the gameplay and problem anjd post it...if it turns out ok.

Well, I set the xbox for 480 and 720p, and switch the output tv type to widescreen. The game never showed any problems on my tv. Wish I could've helped you.
