So I was playing some music via the Zune software and realized that I can see the profiles of all my xbox friends... Okay that's not the interesting part, this is: I can also see my friends' friends and their friends' friends and their friends... ect. So for example by being CheapyD's xbox friend I have access to Gabe and Tycho's friendslists as well, which I otherwise do not. I'm looking at you Major Nelson! You and your friendslist! And it doesn't matter if you are a Zune user, if you have a gamertag you are listed my "friend"... for the world to see! Oops.... umm... Microsoft!? Slight little oversight, perhaps?

Okay I see now that some Zune profiles have their friend activity set to private.

But here's the problem if you've set your xbox friends list to private it can still be viewed in the Zune software unless you've hidden your friend activity there as well. I'm not friends with either Gabe or Tycho, for example, and cannot see their friends list on xbox.com. I can see their friends lists in the Zune software.

I could care less, I just think it's interesting that you can have access to all these gamertags from folks working at microsoft and in the gaming media ect. that otherwise didn't want you to have them. I remember a lot of gamertags leaking out when they updated the dashboard and xbox.com to where you could see people's friends lists. I'm wondering if you can set your zune profile privacy from your xbox or not, since this affects non zune users.

Anyway this discovery was interesting to me, if no one else.

Now you can pester some D list Internet celebs anytime you want. I hear Wombat loves messages from strangers.

I'm going to stab him with my love knife.

I don't know anything about Zunes, but you can turn the ability to let friends see your friends list on/off. The default is On.

How do you know who they are just from their Gamertag, unless you already know who they are?

Well someone who wanted to be a jerk could just spam the hell out of everyone on major nelson's list for example (I'm sure most are microsoft employees). Some are more obvious, like Tycho who has a friend named Gabe on his list.

This was a big problem when friends lists first became viewable online for some people (I remember hearing this on a lot of podcasts), most people still don't have their security settings setup to block zune users even though they do block xbox users. If you listen to the CAGcast you could probably guess that being spotlighted or a D-list internet celebrity on XBL can be problematic.

Anyway it's not my problem but it does seem like an oversight on microsoft's part.

Look on the bright side...you could look at my friends list on Zune and get Liam Lynch's gamertag.

See, now you can totally take advantage of it! ;)

Who the fuck is Liam Lynch?

That wasn't that guy with that corny-ass, extremely dated one-hit wonder, was it?

Yeah..that's one of about a billion things. But more importantly I said it since he created the socks in dubbfoolio's avatar pic.
Psycho.
Wow just putting that out there huh? Isn't this awkward. Well I'm going to message everyone on your friends list and tell them you're not very nice. That'll show you I'm not psycho. THAT'LL SHOW YOU ALL I'M NOT PSYCHO! ;)

Awesome. Do you know Liam Lynch? Or just run into him randomly on XBL?
