help!

my computer randomly restarts, and i don't know what to fix. it mostly happens while i'm playing games. i don't think it happens on a specific game, because my computer has restarted while i was playing World of Warcraft, Counter-Strike, Warcraft III, Unreal Tournament 2004 and hell, even Half-Life (one, not two). i asked my friend (he's a real whiz at fixing problems) and he told me it might of been my heat sync (heat sink?), that it wasn't working properly, causing my computer to restart in fear of overheating. now, before i go out and buy a new heat sync, does anyone have any ideas what else could cause this?

also, i don't even get any message when it restarts, it just happens, right outta the damn blue. but when windows loads up again, i get the error message along the lines of "Windows has experienced a critical error!" with the Send Error Report option.

help?

It might be overheating or it might be bad RAM. Run MemTest to check it and see what turns up. Just google and you should find it.

Also, try to get something like Motherboard Monitor to keep track of the temps inside your case in Windows.

What kind of CPU do you have? I can give you some reccomendations.

Also, a good CPU/Heatsink is not the only thing. Good thermal paste is also a must. Thermal paste goes between the CPU and the heatsink, and it transfers the heat. If you have an aluminum heatsink (silver) go for Arctic Silver 5, if copper heatsink go for a higher priced silicone paste.

I have some spares of both which I could sell to ya cheap.

Jesus Christ boy!

Your cpu should never be that hot.
205F/76c is critical for a processor.
you want anywhere from 20C to a max of 50C. (65-130F)

There are a few possible things. Either the fan on your heat sink shit out on your, or you're using a thermal pad instead of thermal paste for your heat conducting.

DO NOT run this computer until you either replace the fan or get some thermal paste on it.

Even if your CPU does have just a heatsink, it shoudnt be 200 degrees. Check to make sure all the fans in your case are spinning too, $10 says you have a broken exhaust fan.

hmm, well, i went to frys today, and bought a new heat sink. problem is, i had a REALLY hard time taking out my old heat sink. so i think i made something loose down there, and now my new heat sink feels all..well, loose. and when i start my computer, it WILL shut back down after 1-2 minutes. the only way i'm on CAG right now is because my tower is now sideways. so any ideas on what to do now?

my friend said that i effed up my motherboard by being a dumbass, and that i'll need a new mother board. is he right?!

Probably, if you pulled out the heatsink badly and now its loose...there is probably some cheapass solution, but I'm not sure.

200 degrees....crazy....

As for the mobo problem, sry no help here bud.

By the way, I curious, what is your temperature now?

bah screw it, i've decided to finally upgrade my computer and give this one to my brother.

my cpu temp is still exactly the same, according to Motherboard Moniter:

all i really need is a new case, another hd, new motherboard, new processor (3.0 ghz sounds good), and 1gb of ram, since my old ram is outdated and won't be compatible with the new motherboard. i'm gonna try to save up $500 for this little spree of mine, and in the mean time, i'll just buy some of that thermal paste to keep whatever i have at the moment not bursting into flames.
