I have been dying to get this. I read it improves regular DVDS and the HD DVDS look fantastic (provided you have an High Def TV)

I would not spend your hard earned cash on this, blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD 2:1 everywhere, and the 360 without this upscales DVDs to 1080p with VGA already. This will be 100 dollars on clearance, perhaps even less, by this holiday season. Keep your money better spent.

I have it already and it does look sweet on my HDTV to see the HD dvds. I do agree though that it looks like it's not long before it drops in price. I'm thinking that it'll be $150 by the summer time.

couldn't you get this for $160 + tax from CC this holiday season (right when it came out basically)?

I went through 3 of these things before I returned it for good. Either the disc would spin forever (1st one), never spin, or the usb ports were screwed up. Not worth the hassle, and imo, not well built. plus it just makes the 360 look awkward, imo.

I have this and Blu Ray through my PS3. Both are great. I think this well worth $200 for HD-DVD, King Kong and the multi-remote. Almost a no-brainer IMHO.

And it does output 1080p via component as long as you have a TV that accepts 1080p through component (many older HDTVs don't).

And if they have a 360 and want to watch HD movie product remind them why they want to pay $300-400 over what this costs for a PS3. Oh! And then there's the question if they want extras and more affordable HD movies.

Yes, Blu-Ray outsells HD-DVD for one month and all of the sudden it's doomed?

I remember in December, it was the analysts saying that HD-DVD was the winner and HD-DVD beating Blu-Ray in sells.

This battle isn't going to end anytime soon. To think anything otherwise is retarded.

I will not lower myself to the ranks of hd-dvd owners. I just want people to know that buying the hd-dvd addon is a grave mistake and you're throwing away good money on merchandise that is going to end up in a clearance center not too long from now. I dont want people to get screwed. Thanks.

I can't pull the trigger on either format right now. I just don't know what to believe. I'm thinking Holiday '07 of making a decision, at the earliest. Plus, movies on both formats are too expensive for the visual upgrade, as I see it (literally).

Your opinion is irrelevant; I say that as a BR user strictly, just so we're clear.

Now, I'll wait for another $40 of like CC at the very least. This is alright, but buy.com is one of the worst sites I've ever dealt with. *every* deal posted here that's on buy that I've jumped on (about 3-4 of them) were cancelled. This will probably be honored since it's not very much off the MSRP, however. Just be prepared for an amazing amount of frustration with buy.

The battle is far from over.

If you want to keep it that way, I can say the same thing about the PS3. It's over! The Wii sold better than the PS3 did. PS3s are sitting there in stores.

Anyway, a good deal for those who need a HD-DVD player. If you don't need it, then just don't buy it.

I have both and prefer the HD-DVD. Movies are cheaper and in many cases look better.

And it was pretty much Sony saying that they've won the format war, not the rest of the world.

you are rediculous blitz6speed, blu ray outselling HD DVD for 2 weeks does not equal doom for HD DVD. Are you forgetting that HD DVD outsold Blu Ray for almost a year? Are you forgetting that stand alone HD DVD players have outsold standalone blu ray players 5:1?

Thanks for the FUD. That was one month of sales.

Oh, and by the way, upscaling is no where near the same as watching a true HD movie. You're just making all the jaggies, and particles clearer. Like I said though, no way I'd be an early adopter for either format.

Have you guys seen the list of upcoming releases on both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray for 2007? Blu-Ray sales have been taking off like a rocket, and there's very little chance HD-DVD will ever catch up looking at the meager list of releases... even staunch HD-DVD supporters are starting to become format neutral with all the big blockbuster hits for Blu-Ray (spiderman, pirates of the caribbean, casino royale) and barely anything for HD-DVD. Content wise, HD-DVD simply does not compare to BluRay. The bluray dominance will continue a lot longer than just one month...

If that's what you meant then say that instead of spinning PR crap at us. :bomb:

I just wanted to help people understand what's coming to them in the upcoming year if they decide to buy an HD-DVD player, and what they're looking at is a really meager list of releases (im no bluray fanboy, but thats the cold hard truth). If you really like movies, you pretty much have to go BluRay since they have all the studio support and upcoming hits.

In the end, it's the consumer who loses since HD-DVD has the cheaper players, the cheaper movies, and has put out the better product so far... it's just sad that most of the major studios decided to back Bluray.

Yes, now throw that sympathetic spin on to blur the line on whether you are a troll or not.

All of the studio support, eh?

HD-DVD has Universal and Weinstein as exclusives. That's nothing to scoff at.

Not to mention new titles are getting release dates/announced all of the time.

Children of Men, Feast, Harsh Times and The 40-Year-Old Virgin have all been announced/given release dates within the past week.

---------

At this point to call the ballgame on account of one month sell figures/announced release list is retarded.

These companies have way too much money invested into these formats to give up so easily. We'll be lucky to see a clear winner by 2009.

The flame wars just keep going on and on and on...
People, no one can predict the future. To say one product will overcome another is nothing but speculation and educated guesses. I bought an HD add on for the 360. I am happy with it. If HD-DVD loses the war or if Blu-Ray loses the war its not like your HD player of choice will dissapear from your living-room. You can still use it for whatever movies you had already bought previously. And for the record: the add-on for the 360 does not upscale at all by itself. You don't even need the add on for upscaling, just the VGA cable.

If you're looking for a better deal. Gamestop/EB have the HD-DVD player used for $120 after GameInformer coupon. Their website has a store locator that actually worked for me, maybe you'll have the same luck.

2 of the movies you mentioned are from sony (spiderman/casino royale) so ofcourse they would only be blu-ray.... in all honesty, as mentioned before, 2 weeks of sales data is not enough to make a decision yet.... every other week, each side is declaring itself the winner (and sony called itself the winner with betamax, we all know how that ended)

as of right now, hd dvd is getting my money... and the whole combo disc is perfect for me (buy a movie, i can lend it to my friends).... now if combo discs were only $5 move than the standard dvd disc, then that would be perfect as the standard dvd could be phased out, and since it's a combo disc, blu-ray players could play the low-def movie off the dvd layer. speaking of which... are there any dvd/blu-ray combo discs out yet???

If you want all the best films, you need both. That's the bottom line. Lots of good exclusives on both sides. As a side note, the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player will also work on your PC, so you could always move it to your PC if you don't want it on your 360 anymore. I'm not sure what for, except to watch HD-DVD movies on your computer, but just in case HD-DVD software is ever released.

Yeah and note most of this slew of product coming down the BR pipeline in these next months are only BR exclusives, not so much WB and Paramount product. We don't KNOW whether both of them will announce release dates for x title in April when it's March.
Also keep in mind "Cowboy Bebop" is coming to HD DVD and that's not too shabby.

WTF????

what coupon! show me! what does it say!? when does it expire!? what issue was it in!? i must know!

enjoy your shitty MPEG-2 transfers and awesome sony movies like Ultraviolet & Scary movie 3

ill keep on enjoying my crystal clear VC-1 HD-DVDs & universal releases like Scarface, The 40 Year-Old Virgin, The Bourne Identity, The Big Lebowski, Brazil, Shaun of the Dead, etc..

Both formats have their share of shit released on them, so thats not really a downside to blu ray. Im not rushing out to buy Waterworld or the Scorpion King.

This is why I love the 360/HD-DVD and PS3 combo, you can have the best of both worlds.

[quote name='propeller_head']WTF????

The 10% off used accessories coupon that was in last month's issue. Coupon should be good til the end of Feb i believe.

For those having a hard time finding the used store locator, you have to click the "Show Backordered Items" link at the bottom of the search.

Niether format wins because consumers lose. Im hesitant to buy the hd dvd player for 360 because I don't want it dead in the water 10 months from now. So I think about buying a PS3 JUST FOR blu ray but I don't want my $600 Blu Ray purchase to end up dead in the water later. So, like most people, I buy niether one (unless I find a sweet used hd dvd player deal) because in the end I can buy a bobo ass format player and watch the one I don't have succeed, or I can buy both and watch one fail. Either way I lose.

Thanks for the insight, I found a used one near me...ooh boy! So, can you stack Edge with the coupon? With only 10% off (from the coupon), the thing would be $135, right?

I guess none of you here care about Porn in HD... hmmm;)

Just wait until all the porn comes out in HD-DVD and nothing at all on Bluray, now that will make sales go way up for the HD-DVD format...

Yep, $135 with just the edge card. The extra 10% off coupon brings it to $120.

Its YMMV whether or not King Kong comes with it. However if you find that its seperate, it should only be $10.30 if you buy it along with the hd-dvd player using the coupon (12.99 minus 20% off from card/coupon).

No it doesn't. My 1080p set takes 1080p over component, and HD-DVDs run in 1080i.

Wow that's the silliest thing I've ever read. I'm enjoying Kingdom of Heaven, Corpse Bride (also in HD-DVD), Ice Age 2, The Departed, The Prestige etc. They all look OUTSTANDING, and are all now MPEG4 or VC-1 (e.g. The Departed). And Casino Royale next month will likely look phenomenal. So please, don't turn this into a silly fight over what's better. Unless you hold stocks in HD-DVD, save the trolling for elsewhere. I have both the PS3 and an HD-A2 HD-DVD player, and both are great formats.
