Go Gamer Flight Sim Madness
aww man, I was hoping for some space shooters :(
Has there been a good space shooter since Xwing vs. Tie Fighter? I would love to play a more modern space shooter, if there are any.
Which is the best out of the air combat sims? Also, which is the best add-on for FS2004?
There's an addon for MFS called Wings of Power (I and II). It adds military aircraft from World War II, including the B-29. They're made by Shockwave Productions.. even better, there are reviews for them on Gamespot.

Shockwave also made an addon for Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 (which isn't very great in its own right) called Wings of Power. It also adds the B-29.. and you can drop an A-bomb on Berlin. Really good stuff :)

Flight Simulator X is a beast of a game, so I would pass on it unless you have a high end rig. It isn't worth it at this point IMHO. If you're looking for some good combat flight sims, give the IL-2 series a shot. Lock On is also a decent combat flight sim. There's also a massively multiplayer WWII combat flight sim that I've been meaning to look into, but I forgot the name of it.

Also, if you're looking for a cheaper alternative to the Saitek, check out the Thrustmaster line. I've been a fan of them for years, and you can find a force feedback/throttle and stick combo on Ebay for a good bit cheaper. I've owned a couple of Saitek's before, and they broke easily.

Edit: I wanted to add another thing. If you have an older version of Windows, or feel like tracking down some amateur patches, check out the Janes/EA line of flight sims (F-15, USAF, ATF, WWII Fighters, etc.). They may look a little dated, but do an excellent job of mixing simulation with action. One thing that makes many of today's flight sims inaccessible is their degree of realism, especially in cockpit instrumentation. However, playing through MFS2004 will be helpful in actual flight school if you plan on taking some classes and getting a private pilot's license to bounce around in a Cessna or something. You'll be able to pass some ground classes by just knowing stuff off the top of your head. Personally, I get a bigger kick out of combat than worrying about radio frequencies and preflight checklists. If you can find a sim with the AC-130 gunship that's accurately depicted, it'll give you a hardon while you fly around in a circle and pound a target with that damned howitzer strapped to the side of the plane. I also think that the Firepower addon will let you switch between turrets on the B-29, B-17, B-25, B-24, etc.. which is really cool.

Jane's USNF was probably my all-time favorite combat flight sim. I really haven't played any combat flight sims since then, but I'll look into IL-2 and Lock On. I also loved Gunship back in the Commodore 64 days.

I don't plan to make the jump to FSX, I'll stick with FS2004. Is that Flight Environment Expansion pretty good? Sounds like it enhances the water and sky a good bit... that's always been an area I've thought FS2004 is lacking in. The Spitfire expansion sounds pretty sweet at that price too.

I never tried the environment expansions or the Spitfire expansion, but I always thought that it was something that should have been a free patch anyways. USNF and USNF '97 was a blast.

As for space flight sims, check out Starlancer and Freespace. I also know for a fact that there's some amateur project that cleaned up and added to the textures for Freespace 2 and Wing Commander: Prophecy. Freespace is great, except for the control scheme (they FORCE you to fly with a mouse.. it works, but I would much rather play it with a proper throttle and stick). If I remember correctly, Starlancer and Freespace were Chris Roberts concepts (the creator/director of the Wing Commander series). I think Roberts left Msoft Game Studios though before the completion of Freespace or something (I'm talking off the top of my head here, so don't quote me). It's too bad that Origin/Chris Roberts Studio died off.. part of it was due to Roberts and his ego, the other being the bombing of the Wing Commander movie. I'd KILL to have a new Privateer, or a new Wing Commander game. The cheese known as the WC FMV with Mark Hamill prancing around a guy in a Kilrathi costume and an angry Malcom McDowell are pretty damned funny looking back in retrospect.
