What does the American Dream mean today?
For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity.
As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don’t.

__________
Update 4/11: More Details:
 • The protagonist's name is Niko Bellic - an Eastern European immigrant who has come to Liberty City to live the "American Dream." The game is set in Liberty City in 2007, but it is bigger than the Liberty City we saw in GTA III.
 • The GTA 4 equivalent of the Statue of Liberty is called the Statue of Happiness... Broker is the GTA IV equivalent of Brooklyn, Manhattan is now called Algonquin, Queens is now Dukes, the Bronx is Bohan, and New Jersey is Alderney. The map is smaller than San Andreas, but considerably more detailed. No countryside or desert, we are led to believe.
 • Rockstar is giving its players more freedom, more choice, and more sense of control over their destiny — the structure of GTA4's storyline is quite different to it's predecessors as it can be told in a number of different ways. You can talk to people in person, by cell phones, and there are a bunch of other ways of giving the player information... In previous GTA games you were like a slave because you had to constantly take orders from people when doing missions. There is still an element of that in Grand Theft Auto 4, but you can also choose how you want to spend your time...
 • There are no planes in GTA IV because there is only one city, and Rockstar want the game to seem realistic. That means there will be no rollerblades, no unicycles, probably no jetpacks and indeed no planes. Rockstar are giving choice and variety which feels right for the character. However there will be motorbikes.
 • After an initial load sequence, the game will never load again. Not even during exterior-interior transitions (and vice versa).
 • Both versions of the game (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) will likely be identical, but the Xbox 360 version will have exclusive downloadable episodic [sizeable] content. Rockstar have now spent over 3 years developing the game, and Dan Houser compares the leap from GTA III to GTA IV, to the leap from GTA to GTA III.
 • GTA IV will have multiplayer, but it's not going to be a massively multiplayer online game, says Dan Houser. They are trying to make something that is interesting, fun, progressive and which goes along nicely with the single-player game
Taken from Kotaku which was taken from GameInformer
_____________________________
Looks like the upcoming Gameinformer will have all of the juicy details. Xboxic.com has some details from the mag and claims that the will have more as the day goes on:

The first big scoop is that the game will feature no planes. It’s not clear whether or not this has to do with hardware issues (Saints Row developer Volition blamed the 360’s lack of harddrive for the absence of planes) or with the fact that the game is set in New York. The tragic events of 9/11 caused Rockstar to scrap planes from GTAIII, which was also set in Liberty City, so this might very well be the reason.
Game Informer played the 360 version.

Multiplayer is TBA.

If you were getting your hopes up for visiting each of the 3 areas from the last-gen GTA games then you’re going to be in for a let down, the game’s entirely set in Liberty City. However, the game is going to be even bigger than San Andreas.
The game’s storyline is going to offer more freedom than before, you’re no longer a slave to the people that issue you missions. You’re free to draw your own path. The character you’re playing is called Niko Bellic and apparently you won’t be riding unicycles.
“Ballic is not going to be riding a Unicycle or Rollerblading around, we’re giving a choice of variety that feels right for the character. We are not suddenly saying there will be no more motorbikes, were keeping all of that stuff, we are keeping the same range and diversity that we had it’s just going to fit the character.”
Apparently the pedestrians aren’t just lifeless props that are just aimlessly wandering around anymore; “a big part of New York life is walking the streets and meeting lunatics”, says Rockstar founder Dan Houser. He said that they were definitely going to try to incorporate this into the game.
The Game Informer issue with all this and more is on stands on April 18th.

Well, to be fair, you couldn't fly planes into buildings in the previous GTA games, right? I'm more inclined to think of it as a (temporary) hardware limitation. Future games will figure it out, certainly.

And rollerblades? Gods, yes.

Personally, though, I'm looking for information on what options/additions will make the 360 or PS3 versions different (and, ultimately, superior). Although I don't expect *any* differences, save for perhaps time delays in DLC availability, I may be surprised by what's offered.

as long as they took out those shitty ass empty areas like in san andreas (countryside and shit) im good. I hated jacking a car from one city and driving it to the next

I agree, they made the map big. Then told us it was bigger then ever before. But 50% of the map was nothing.

I'm not upset at the lack of planes. They never did anything for me. But helicopters were cool. It seems from that description above that motorcycles will be hard to find. And it seems that they're taking a more dark/dramatic/serious angle which means we might be saying goodbye to the Faggio.

You could fly planes into buildings into San Andreas, but it didn't do anything. Your plane would explode, and the building would have the exact same texture it always did.

As for the countryside arguement, I liked the countryside. There was something nice about driving thorough the sticks at night, and knocking some hick off his tractor and driving it off into the woods. If they made the game world more dynamic, it would help. I'm sure 3 3.2 GHZ processors can do that?

I think you people are crazy. I loved planes in San Andreas. One of my best memories of that game was doing flight school and realizing the licensed Tom Petty's "Learning to Fly" just for that segment (if it plays at other times, I didn't notice). I had tons of taking the Harrier under bridges and through trees while listening to the radio.

I also loved the countryside. The little suburbs we kind of superfluous, especially considering their lack of use in missions, but it was just more to explore. And finding the rare spawn points for the riding lawn mower was a treat.

I hope they work to incorporate more unique experiences into this one. Customizing my car was cool, and even better in Saint's Row, but neither game let you take it to the extreme. If you're going to let me customize a car, why not bikes, semis and tractors? You know, and have each random thing you think of customizing have some sort of unique feature that you can attach to it.

EDIT: Seems to talk a little about Belic's story. He's estern European and goes to Liberty City because his cousin can't stop talking about the american dream and how everything is just perfect. Belic finds out that what his cousin has been telling him is far from the truth, he's actually in a lot of trouble and needs help.

There's talk about the physics engine and how walking and opening doors has a real feel to performing those actions and how civilians look like real people and aren't as stiff as previous games. The cities contain and huge level of detail and it will be smaller than San Andreas (previous article mentions it being bigger).

"Learning to Fly" wasn't in San Andreas, "Runnin' Down a Dream" was.

I'm a bit unhappy about no airplanes and now I'm not nearly as excited for this game anymore. In fact, its dropped from being a high priority for me to being a game I'll pick up if there isn't much else releasing around the same time period. I dunno, a big appeal of the GTA games starting with Vice City was planes and helicopters and now that it seems they've left that out, I'm pretty disappointed.

I know everyone's just gonna say "go buy an airplane game then" but there was just something really fun about driving to the airport getting into a plane and flying over the city. Then when I'd had enough just jump out and parachute to the ground. There was so much more freedom to it than a flight sim and it really brought the sandbox game to a new level so to speak.

I'm definitely thinking of Learning to Fly. I might be crazy, but I'm sure I'm not mixing up the two.

That article is a little disturbing. If the people are too realistic, I'll feel bad slaughtering them.

That thought came to mind as I was reading it. If its too realistic, I don't know if I'll have the same amount of fun as previous installments.

QFT! I really enjoyed the flying in SA, it gave a sense of how large the map really was. I also enjoyed the countryside as well; it was nice to get away from the city and have them explore a different side to the landscape. I lived in the country for the first 18 years of my life and thought they did a great job representing it ... for those unaware, out in the country it's rather open and barren.

Guess I'll have to play some more SA tonight, I LOVE that game. My only hope is that GTA:IV will progress as well.

Anyone else letdown by this news? So far it seems like a stripped down GTASA with promises of a decent story mode and "realistic" peds. Never mind the fact that I getting this sinking feeling that the promises won't quite come true, but what about the other problems from all the other GTAs.

Will they fix the shitty mission structure? Never finished GTA VC because they F'd up the final parts of the game by forcing you to do crap that was supposed to be optional. And every GTA had very cheap missions that sucked the fun out of the game.

I really like flying in San Andreas as well. Diving out of a plane at 10,000 feet and parachuting was a blast. Although, if the game looks as good as these new screens and actually has all the features they are boasting I'll get over it. ;)

collectors editions are never worth it. Unless you like metal cases that don't fit into your dvd racks.

This one though may be worth it with the soundtrack, which I imagine would be huge. Wasn't the vice city soundtrack like 4 cd's? then add in a duffle bag key chain and an art book. Seems worth it if you felt like spending they money
This one though may be worth it with the soundtrack, which I imagine would be huge. Wasn't the vice city soundtrack like 4 cd's?
Note how they call it "selected" soundtrack. Seems like its abridged to me. I'd expect nothing more than the biggest hits all on one CD.

What I'd LIKE to see (if we don't get the complete soundtrack) is a dual-format disc. One of the layers could be read by legacy CD players and just have the "selected" soundtrack. The other layer could either be a CD or DVD and have the ENTIRE soundtrack in a compressed digital audio format. It'd probably end up being encrypted *.wma because we know how much the RIAA likes DRM and the DMCA, but imagine how sweet a disc chock full for 256KBps mp3s would be - you know you're going to pop it into your computer to rip it anyway, why not just skip the step.

As far as mulitplayer goes, I was a HUGE fan of GTA 2 LAN/Online multiplayer. It was fast paced and fun, especially with 3 or more people playing. I think I am one of a select few that actually preferred GTA 2 over the 3d reincarnates, but that might be because I'm a long time player and I grew so attached to the second. (Plus, I suck at aiming guns in third person console games and never devoted the time to learn, so I suck at the newer GTA games).

I can only hope that the multiplayer in GTA IV is simiar to that in #2. I obviously haven't played the game yet but I suspect that there'd need to be some kind of boundary to keep everyone near each other, but I really doubt anyone would have any opposition to selecting a "level" or "area" to play in to keep things fun.

Man, I hope Rockstar reads this forum.

I think i read that rockstar is planning on releasing the collectors edition early and pushing back the normal edition a few weeks back

Supposedly to not lose sales thanks to halo 3 but seems like a way to rape people and make the diehard fans buy the collectors edition.

I can imagine the hilarity that will ensue when we get missions where we can trail someone in their own trunk, or transporting a dead body and it falls out-for the lols.
I can imagine the hilarity that will ensue when we get missions where we can trail someone in their own trunk, or transporting a dead body and it falls out-for the lols.
There was a mission where you had to transport a body that could fall out of the trunk already, i think it was in GTA vice city.

it was in GTA III.

Then after you escaped from the gang chasing you, you took the car to the car crusher and had the car crushed.

wow, if thats true, thats fucking gay. I will definateley wait for the regular game or just rent it

No the rumor was that Rockstar was pushing the release date back because 2k games is going under, but they debunked that rumor already
Doesn't that screen suggest that L.A. Noire will be PS3 exclusive?
I had never heard of that game until today. Wow that looks good, based on the trailer.

As for no DLC, no big deal, because (1) it will come eventually (whether as DLC, or included on the GH version of the discs, like Call of Duty and Marvel Whatever did on the 360) to the PS3, and (2) I've only owned this gen's consoles for 12 months (the 360, anyway), and, XBLA/PSN/VC titles aside, I *DESPISE* DLC, and I have not seen any that are worth the money, or any that really expand the game beyond something insignificant. I think that Shivering Isles may be the lone exception, but I'm also not going to pay $20 for DLC, based on the chance that I may eventually trade in said game.

All that said, the differences in the base game will lead me to choose the 360 version or the PS3 version. The option of paying for more game isn't going to sway me.

why do I feel the collectors edition will be just like the HALO 2 "collectors" edition? That had to literally be clearanced out to finally leave shelves.
$50M to Microsoft is NOTHING. They got a bargain.
$50 million to Microsoft's game division that has lost money nearly every quarter since the first Xbox came out is a lot of money.
Honestly I would have thought that $50 million would be enough to get Rockstar to make GTA4 exclusive to the 360, not just the DLC. However, I'm getting the feeling that since they are spending so much money that these expansions are going to be big, most likely PC style expansion packs instead of the small content packs we usually see on the XBL Marketplace.
