Jack Thomson emails Bill Gates and blames Counter Strike for shootings

Oh Mr. Thompson your right me pulling a piece of plastic on a "controller" which fires program code at another piece of program code, and texture is soooooo responsible for me killing people. Its has nothing to do with the abusive parents or lack of love in the home, or unstable household as a child. It was the 60 hours I played In Counterstrike...

I like how the media is saying "videogames and violent US culture influenced this child to kill."

HE'S A fuckING 23 YEAR OLD COLLEGE STUDENT. HE'S NOT A CHILD!

That's like saying that the government is to blame for building roads, because than an independent company builds a car and someone gets into a car wreck.

IF THEY HADN'T BUILT THE ROAD THEN THERE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A CAR TO DRIVE ON IT! BILL GATES IS RESPONSIBLE FOR COUNTER-STRIKE! VACCINES ARE USED FOR MIND CONTROL! KETCHUP IS A VEGETABLE!

Why doesn't one of these crazy murdering gamers kill Jack Thompson? Since, you know, we're all ready to fly off the handle.

Since he can also tie the previous worst school shooting in the world on video games, I wonder how he would tie in the previously worst school shooting in the US (back in 1966) on games?

Argh! I want to punch this guy in the face. I laughed at "the triggerman would most likely be a teen video gamer trained on a sniper video game". Seriously? Ok, does the game teach you how to assemble a gun? If so, there could be relevence to this quote. However; Shooting a gun is so easy a caveman could do it. All you do is look down the barrel and fire. So exactly how does counterstrike train killers?

umm, to fifty year old, a 30 year old is still a child. a 23 year old still in school with no family of his own?

yes, a child.

Watch out! He'll blame your tendency to punch due to Video Games.....specifically Wii Boxing or Super Punch Out!

Punch Out and Super Punch Out taught me all about racist stereotypes.

Jack Thompson is a complete waste of air. I don't say this as a gamer, because honestly I don't think he will ever accomplish the severe censorship that he would like. I say this as a human being, because by spewing this BS he is trivializing this tragedy and everyone involved in it. Removing the blame from where it should sit, the guy who did the shooting, and placing it on a GAME.

He's the lowest form of life imo, just a complete waste.

Logically speaking, a kid with violent tendencies is naturally going to be attracted to violent video games. It's not as if this were a well-adjusted, outgoing kid who played Counterstrike and suddenly mutated into a spree killer.

These attempts to explain away such aberrant behavior with something as trite as "violent video games made him do it" trivialize the whole affair. If that truly were the case, college campuses would be warzones.
I bet the kid also ate pizza.

It's the fucking pizza sauce that makes these kids go apeshit, not video games.
fuck that. I'm willing bet the VT guy also drank water. Ok you bastards who here drinks water.

Was Cho a trained marksman? I think not. It's absurd that Jack Thompson would compare him to a man (Steinhauser) who has extensive firearms training, instead choosing to point the finger of blame (once again) to video games.

I am a drinking water EXPERT. I hope Fox News calls me for some interviewing.

No, water is the least of it, you have to blame this molecule for letting this guy live.

I am an expert on breathing, Fox News should consult me on how he could have blocked airflow to prevent this shooting.

Normally I hate being associated with other lawyers but its stuff like this that is really giving us a bad name. I cannot believe an actual lawyer wrote that letter. He doesn't even use complete sentences and his misuse of commas makes me want to train for months on Typing of the Dead so I can exact my own brand of justice on his ass. Jesus Christ.

He's fucking with the wrong guy there. The Almighty Bill Gates could make Jack Thompson disappear into the night if he so desired

And for our sake, we should start e-mailing him and tell him to make it happen

I guess since I drive wreckless in (insert racing game) I drive wreckless in real life. Not the case by a mile.

Jack just needs a clue. Maybe a 20 ton anvil dropped on him would give him one. Hello, Acme?

If only Animaniacs was still alive today...

i read about this today

and in my opinion,

it's really tragic what happened

and it's really pathetic for jack thompson to do this,

and for dr. phil to make the comments that he did.

I don't care he says anymore. Jack Thompson isn't relevant and I'm not going to continue acting like he is. If even Rush Limbaugh is calling out fools like Thompson, then he knows he is fucked.

Korean + Guns? how can it not be counterstrike! And if he killed people with Spells and Swords we can Blame Diablo 2 or World of Warcraft. But man what if he totally rushed them with Bugs? STARCRAFT! WOO!!!

This kid didn't even play videogames according to his ex-roommates.

He just listened to rock, rode his bike, and used AIM all the time.

Anyone see that picture he sent to NBC inbetween the two shootings?
Where's holding the two guns out and posing for a camera?

They took it off CNN.com, it creeped me out a little.

I'm showing my age. Was thinking Wile E Coyote. A Jack Thompson themed Animaniacs would be hilarious though.

Jack is so dangerous, though. Everyone here can understand why his comments are just plain stupid, but the people he reaches (especially on news programs) only see the "christian conservative" and "school shooting expert" blurbs next to his name. He looks and sounds like a straight shooter to your average gaming-ignorant person.

He isn't trying just for more restrictions on M rated games, either. He wants some games, such as your "Bully" or "GTA" to have the same classification as pornography. Obviously that would pull all M and even many T rated games off shelves completely. That will most likely never happen, and this issue will probably fade with time like after Columbine. You just never know for sure though, especially with the elections coming up...

He tries. He tries. He tries.
He wants. He wants. He wants.

He tries to do a lot of things and he wants a lot of things to happen, yet none of it ever actually works. He can't do shit about anything but whine to the press and make threats to those in the industry.

wow, that man can write. i am very very impressed. however, i have to say that i think there is a grain of truth in what he says. do i think that playing counterstrike for hours on end makes me want to kill people.... no (besides those shit talking 11 year olds) but do i think my no-real-firearms-training-but-extensive counterstrike-gaming would make me more efficient in a shooting spree over someone who has no gun or game training, hell yes.

dont get me wrong, i think thompson is a nut, theres a simple solution to kids playing violent video games, watching violent movies & tv, and listening to evil music... and it starts and ends with parental involvement.
Oh shit (pun fully intended), now you're going to get sued.
I couldn't care less if it did happen.

interesting, I didn't know that you could be old enough to legally buy alcohol and still be a child..........................
interesting, I didn't know that you could be old enough to legally buy alcohol and still be a child..........................
Trust me, "childhood" and "adulthood" are states of mind, degrees of maturity and psychological changes

"Legal age" is simply when the order system [government] around you decides you can or can not. [For example, at 23 you can't rent a car at most agencies, you can't run for many political offices, your tax rulings are also different]

But a 23 year old is far from an adult, please put a 23 year old in a room with a 16 year old and a 13 year old and then put them in a room with a 33 year old and a 49 year old, and then tell me in which room their social interaction, level of comfort, and body language was more positive. Analyze their thought patterns, belief systems, concerns, interests, etc, and all results point to "child" not "adult"
