This is the second incarnation of the Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl general discussion thread. The old one with both online and general was too big so two separate ones were created.

Old Mega Thread: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128310

This is the
Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon
Pearl general discussion thread. There is another thread for talking about the online part of the game. Please only post in the appropriate thread.

Woot, uncrowding is good.

Another woot, some dude on 4chan was handing out Mews. :D So, if any of you guys can tell me how to breed these things, I'll start handing out eggs.

Personally I do not want it that way. The only thing I will take that is not straight up is a clone of a Pokemon which can be obtained in the game. I received a Manaphy this way. AK85 got it the right way through Ranger and then cloned it. Mew of course is only through events.

I have a real Mew by the way! There is my woot! :D

Good luck on your Mew though!
i wish i could get a mew, but unfortunately i'll never get one. and no, you can't breed legendaries. :(
I had to deal with standing in line with kids 10 years younger than me at TRU with parents suspecting me as a child molester to get a mew. But it was worth it!

yeah that's kinda like when I picked up my copy of diamond at circuit city, it was just me and some lady and her son. she was like "you're getting pokemon?" and I was like of course, then she asked me, "you play them???" and then again I was like "they're good games." then she looked at me funny and walked off.

What was worth it, the standing in line or child molesting? Its people like you that forces nintendo to use different friend codes for all games.

can anyone remind me of how breeding works? havent played gold in a while

easiest way of breeding requires a ditto right?

I like having multiple threads. I almost was going to make a second one, myself. People's newb and/or strategy questions shouldn't be buried in all that wi-fi mess in the other thread.

Correct. Ditto can breed with either gender.

With normal breeding:

-The species is whatever the female was
-males can pass on attacks
-eggs can take up to 10k steps to hatch
-legendaries (except manaphy which breeds a phione) cannot breed

I am much happier with multiple threads

That is how I got mine. At least I had my friend along so it looked as if two child molesters were there!

That is my feeling exactly. Those things which you mentioned are all fine to talk about, but it does need its own place.

So far I have had mixed reactions to the two threads, but it is leaning toward positive a bit. I hope that at the end of the day, or maybe even tomorrow, I can see what the general consensus is.

I say multiple threads for this game is good since so many damn people have it. Plus I'd like to know more about EV training and breeding since I have no clue how to do it. I stopped meticulously paying attention to pokemon training at RBY.

Back in the old days, All I have to worry about was properly catching a lowlevel pokemon with abnormally high stats and raise it level by level. And not to mention to give it steroids like Protein, Carbos, Iron, and avoid Rare Candy like the plague.

So if anybody cares to post, please enlighten me with guides on:

1. What is "EV training"? and how does it benefit me?
2. How do you breed pokemon? Why do you breed pokemon?
3. What other things should I know that will help me with pokemon d/p and online battles?

I know it's alot to ask for, but I'd like to know wtf is going on. Thanks!

Are we allowed to ask specifics in this thread?

Because:

Anyone know how to get that pokeball item in eterna city behind/next to the gym thats covered in the tree?
There doesnt seem to be a way to get in...

This is going to sound really weird but you literally run through the trees. There's actually a path hidden there, the tops of the trees cover it but there are any trees on that path. It's an old rpg trick standby

This thread is for anything that is not related to the online portion which includes trades, battles, wi-fi setup, friend codes. Other then the things I just mentioned everything is fine for this thread.

These are quite complicated questions so I will give you links to things you may read. Serebii is sometimes quite busy so you may need to try the links later.

1. http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-rs/ev.shtml

2. http://www.serebii.net/games/breed.shtml

3. When making your lineup think of the best combinations of course, but also make sure that the Pokemon compliment each other. Say if you send out a Pokemon that does rain dance it may be wise to have a water Pokemon in there as well. As for online battles remember that people will most likely be harder than the computer, so be on guard!

I'll try to explain EV training a little bit. Bear in mind it is very very complicated, so I'll also provide links to other guides.

EV Guide at Psypokes http://www.psypokes.com/lab/evguide.php

Basically EV points are a hidden value you get after killing any and all pokemon in the game.

Pokemon can give between 1-3 per kill, and every 4 you get, will eventually boost that stat one point.

Here you can search for any specific stat you wish to EV raise and it will show you all the pokes that raise that stat http://www.psypokes.com/dex/search.php?type=effort

You can only have a total of 510 ev points
You can only have 255 in any one stat, but since stat boosts are distributed every 4 points, you can stop at 252 since those last 3 points would be wasted.

The easiest way i have found to keep track of this is to have a notepad, and just make a mark for every 4 you get to note that you have 1 ev point. for example:

IIII to denote the 4 ev points, and then just make a slash through it to denote you completed that stat point.

Boosting EV gain

Macho Brace - doubles ev gain
Pokerus - doubles ev gain
EXP share - gain evs without partaking in battle

So a pokemon equipped with the macho brace and infected with pokerus would gain 4 evs instead of 1, which can speed this whole process up very dramatically. Pokerus can be lost, but once your poke was infected, he will always gain double evs afterwards.

Steroids

Steroids do not give a flat stat boost. It seems like it, but they actually add to your ev pool which in turn boosts the stat. These cap after 100 evs, meaning once you have 100 evs they will no longer boost you regardless of how many were from killing and how many were from steroids

Carbos - 10 speed ev points
HP up - 10 HP ev points
Protein - 10 attack ev points
Iron - 10 defense ev points
Calcium - 10 Sp. Attack ev points
Zinc - 10 Sp. defense ev points

When ev training a lower level poke, you will not see the growth instantly. their stats will continue to go up reasonably, and the stat boost will be spread out over the entire course of their leveling. This is to keep people from having a Charmander with 100 attack at level 10.

This whole technique is jsut a way to give you more flexibility when raising your pokemon. You can make what it already does better, or you can even take what it does not so well and help boost it up to make it suck less.

Hopefully this helps. i encourage everyone to follow the above links and soak up the information there if you really want to seriously start ev training. It is in no way needed for finishing the game or catching them all, but if you plan on battling or want the best team you can possibly have, it is almost a necessity.

I like how hohez and I used different sites to explain the same thing. Both are good sites IMO.

Props to him for actually posting all the stuff! I also like how he used the word "steroids."

Also, serebii is a great source of information, but it is probably the slowest least stable website i have ever been to. Psypokes has nearly all the same information but runs damn near perfectly at all hours of the day.

http://www.psypokes.com/

I highly recommend it over serebii.

I reccomend Serebii over psypokes, but ever since D/P released it's been slow as hell. It ran fine for me before that. For now, psypokes is better.
Am I the only one getting bored of Pokemon already? 2 hours in and it feels like a chore.
Online trading/breeding has helped me enjoy the game much more!

Also, the ads on the bottom of the first page are about sexual abuse thanks to you child molesters!
Am I the only one getting bored of Pokemon already? 2 hours in and it feels like a chore.
Have you played past games?

Personally I have a hard time putting it down! I would go through the night tonight if it were not for school tomorrow.

Pokemon only seems like a chore to me when I'm breeding stuff and trying to get the right nature. I've already hatched 10 junk snorunts in an attempt to get one with a naive or hasty nature, and on top of that it needs to be female too. If only I didn't want a frolass so much...

personally, I like serebii over the other sites, it's got everything I need. but I will admit that it does have loading problems every now and then.

I'be played through Red, Blue and Yellow way too many times. That's where I stopped though.

well diamond and pearl are definately a stup up from red, blue and yellow.

I'm pleased, I finally have my frolass and it only took 21 snorunts to get. I have two boxes full of junkemon from my various breeding schemas

Are the buildings in D/P actually 3d models? Like what parts of the game are 3d models...
i think they're 3d. In the opening video, it has an aerial view and shows them at different angles.

So what exactly make a Pokemon happy? I know letting it battle, not fainting it, and letting it hold things are good. Are there haircuts in this game? I want to make Riolu and Golbat nice and happy.
So what exactly make a Pokemon happy? I know letting it battle, not fainting it, and letting it hold things are good. Are there haircuts in this game? I want to make Riolu and Golbat nice and happy.
Keeping it in the first slot and having it get massages are also good.
Keeping it in the first slot and having it get massages are also good.
Massages? I'm assuming this is a new feature in D/P?

Also, if anyone ever gets some Ditto eggs, I'd like to steal one. Once I find the daycare I'd gladly pump out some eggs.

Oh, and relating to breeding- when I stick the 2 pokemon in the daycare to breed, will it also level them up and possibly delete my moves for new ones? If so, I might give breeding a second thought. :p
Oh, and does anyone know exactly how the friendship evolutions work? I wanna know for when I'm ready to raise the Riolu I got from Riley.
AFAIK, if Riolu is very happy and gains a level in the daytime, he evolves.

i'm not sure how the happiness system works, but I do know that giving them lots of stat boosting items, leaving them in the 1st spot in your party and not letting them faint works well.
From TGN:

is that really in the game? if it is, then I must have overlooked it. but nonetheless, that's pretty funny. I lol'ed.

Somebody just named their rival cunt.

The fastest way to raise a pokemon's happiness is to give it vitamins. My Riolu evolved into a Lucario at level 16, but I gave it 20 vitamins to cut down on EV training time.
I still think that naming your Pokemon "FUKURSELF" is one of the best parts of the game.
*thinks about it* lol, yeah that would be pretty funny.

So... does anyone know how many steps it takes to breed an egg from 2 pokemon in daycare, and how much experience the pokemon will gain in that time?
So... does anyone know how many steps it takes to hatch an egg, and how much experience the pokemon will gain in that time?
the number of steps depends on what pokemon is in the egg.
