Ever give up on a game...and realize you gave up right before a critical plot twist or something really cool, then wish maybe you hadn't set the game aside for so long?

My case in point: The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker. I bought the game at the end of last April, played it casually for about two weeks, and finally got bored with it and set it aside. I had just reached "Return to Forsaken Fortress" and fought the Phantom boss where you obtain the Skull Hammer...

So, recently, I was browsing through my drawer of neglected games, and thought that it was a shame I never finished Wind Waker. I remember thinking it was really neat, but it just seemed to drag a bit. Tonight I was bored, and got the wild hair to pop it in and see if I was too lost after all this time. I almost considered deleting the save game and maybe starting over...

But geebus...I'm glad I didn't start over! I had no clue I was RIGHT before a huge plot development! Hopefully this will give me a little push to keep going and finally finish it.

Has anything similar ever happened to you guys?

I gave up on bloodrayne after the first level and Star Fox Adventures after about 20% but have recently revisited both and am enjoying them more. Glad I didn't totally give up on either.

Bloodrayne gets MUCH better after the first level. Too much water in the first level, and since water hurts you it kinda sucks. After that the killing gets much more fun.

Star Fox adventures had me bored to death after the first 20%. Too much find an obligatory number of "whatchamacallits" to save this creature, then repeat. But levels are starting to get more interesting lately and my opinion has improved.

I know what you mean about Zelda Wind Waker though, I think it has to do with all the sailing. You have to sail so much and feel like you are accomplishing very little. I love the game but they could have condensed the sailing a lot, would have improved the game flow. I'm almost finished with it, and being a completionist I am trying to finish almost everything, but I think I am just gonna beat it soon.

I know the feeling there too...I got up to about 35% or so.

I gave up on Devil May Cry 13 months ago and never pick up again. I beat lots of action games before playing DMC, such as Maximo(PS2), Buffy(XBOX), Splinter Cell(XBOX), Rygar(PS2), etc. I love action games and heard that DMC is a must play. But it's just not my type.
I gave up on DMC two times. First time, I was only on the first level, feeling bored after about one hour play. Second time, I think I was on 5th level, just killing a large spider, but I still felt bored. It's repetitive to me.
Now, DMC still lays on my shelf, collecting dust I guess.

I put down Eternal Darkness when I got stuck about half way thru and started getting new games, so I put off getting back to it. Then when I tried to play again, my mind went totally blank on the controls and what I was doing, so I had to start over. The most upsetting part was getting freaked out by the same things twice, damn that bathtub.

This is kinda older, but I have come back to Star Wars: Pod Racer many times. I now have just two races left to complete, both of which are total bitches. The first time I stopped playing, I was maybe half-way through. The next time, I just had two races left. I have since picked it up again, gotten a lot better at one of the races, and then given up again. It's just going to be one of those things where it takes a ton of practice and then the planets aligning for me to come in 1st place. I enjoy the game every time, though.

Agreed on WW being a beating at times. I enjoyed it enough, but I had to pretty much force myself to carry on around the same point you gave up. All that damned sailing really killed me all the way through. There are tons of sidequests I know I never did, and am pretty sure I never will. I'd rather replay any of the other Zelda games first. Loved the gameplay and graphics, though. Just the sailing and pace of most of the game was unbearable. It just wasn't difficult enough either.

The only game in recent memory that I actually picked back up is M&L: SS. Although, I can't say that I willingly put it down. A lost save file made me set it aside out of frustration but I picked it back up a few weeks later.

Other than that, Ratchet and Clank: GC is on my list of "pick it back ups." I got stuck at the part where you have to bring that nerdy character some artifact. (Goes to show how long it has been. I don't even remember the characters name!) I have no idea where to get the artifact. I couldn't hear the dialog that led to that point because my lady was jabbering away in my ear. I just love it when women want to "share" while I am playing a game. WTF!

EDIT: Just remembered another game. Metroid Fusion. I cannot beat the last boss! Damnit!

Just recently I gave up on POP but came back to it yesterday. I was stuck in an area that I really had no business being stuck in. Maybe I was just too tired that day to play it, I dunno. But I fired it back up on a whim, zoomed right through it and continued playing for another two hours and really enjoyed myself. There have been many other games I have given up on though that have not been returned to.

Ikaruga...over and over again...

StarFox i gave up and sold.
Up until a month ago on gba, i had never actually beaten Mario 2. I had gotten to Wart before...and i guess i either blacked out or turned off the game. i dont know anymore.

Zelda 2...Im waiting for my Hori controller, and then ill finally kick this games ass.(yes, it does have an ass)

Now here's a slightly different circumstance. Half-Life. I played through the entire game with NO codes... Up until that ball sack boss. Even with codes it took freakin forever...like the first level of Bloodrayne...

I was very close to giving up on Knights of the Old Republic and selling it until I rescued Bastila and saw her tear through guys with her double-edged lightsaber. I was hooked after that.

Star Ocean 2: I got to the last guy, but never beat it.
F-Zero GX: Beat the GP, beat all of the story on easy, 7/9 on hard, and 3/9 on very hard.
Disgaea: I got 7 out of 8 of the endings.

Hitman 2, the one in Russia, the one where you go through the Embassy. After trying that many I time, I gave up until a few weeks ago, and am on the last Japan level.

I usually will complete a game before I move onto another one. I played through Star Fox adventures and despite the nice graphics I was bored all the way through. The spirit tests get really dumb hard, in a way which requires less skill and more memorization. It was a real letdown since I was a major Rare fan and Zelda is my favorite series. I thought Wind Waker was great all the way through (twice so far). Really immersive. I gave up on Otogi after beating the fishgirl boss. I just didn't get it. I really liked Devil May Cry and the reviews had me believing that it was up to par with DMC. I know I will never beat F-ZERO GC. I keep plugging away at Viewtiful Joe. Even though I've played the last level several times (each time getting closer to wining) I never get bored of that one.

How about those old NES games that are just so unfair-hard that you couldn't beat them? Like Ninja Gaiden 1 or the first Castlevania.
How about those old NES games that are just so unfair-hard that you couldn't beat them? Like Ninja Gaiden 1 or the first Castlevania.
The first Castlevania game is retarded hard. I can usually get to the Grim Reaper with no problem, but that boss is damn hard. Using an emulator and getting to Dracula is difficult and even WITH the emulator and saving states etc it took me a VERY long time to beat him.

Getting past the Grim Reaper in the first Castlevania game was extremely difficult. I believe I cheated by using a controller that allowed me to switch to slow motion so that I had thinking time to eliminate the sickles flying around the screen. Dracula wasn't particularly easy either, but he was easier to beat than the Grim Reaper. Another tought NES game was Castle of Dragon. I never did beat that one.

Yes, emulation is the only way I beat Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden. I can't believe how cheaply developers could add hours of play to their games back then just by making them insanely hard. Makes you think about the current games that are short but enjoyable, the ones you don't necessary die a lot in.

Grandia II, I got all the way to the last boss and stopped playing because I got my PS2. Maybe I should go back and beat it so I can see what the ending is.

I gave up on FFX right at the last boss. I can't stand when last bosses are made to be extremely difficult to give the ending some epic feel. So often (especially FF games) the games themsevles are pretty easy, and then the boss is really hard for no reason. Turns me off every time.

Go back to it ASAP. the ending is deffenitly worth it. and honestly, the last batlles were kinda fun

I feel you there Mr Unoriginal. I gave up on FFV at the last boss. I coasted through the game and didn't level up much. Then I get to X-Death and he smokes me... Think I'm gonna go throw that back in right now.

Super Ghouls N' Ghosts requires you to play through twice to get to the final boss. Plus, back in the SNES days you couldn't save. Who's going to sit and play the game that long?

Zone of the Enders 2. I quit at some boss battle with a chick that I couldn't hit. Plus I got lost in the story line and had no idea what I was fighting for. I had no idea if I was a good guy or a bad guy.

And I didn't give up on but I had to put down Virtua Fighter 4 Evo. If I hadn't put it down I'd never have played anything else.

I gave up on Kingdom Hearts, no matter how much I tried to get into that game, I just couldn't. I made it up to the point where I met Hercules. But it was like pulling out teeth. Other games I just gave up on cause they suck Thunderstrike:eek:peration Phoenix or Dropship. Just hated those games.

i give up on almost all of my games now thanks to cag. theres so many i just pop one in play maybe the first board, give up to pop in the next one i just scored cheap. so i have a pile of go back to's.
only one i beat was Megaman network transmissions i got back @ the KB sale

I think I could count on 1 hand the number of games I've actually finished. Most just get too boring or insanely hard like those mentioned above.

Max Payne and Red Faction are the only 2 I've ever finished without cheating. I'm close on a number of others too, I just don't have that much patience anymore. That and I think my gaming skills have been getting weaker in my old age.

My woman just got to the final boss in the first Dark Cloud and it's just rediculously hard. He does a move that's unblockable, literally. That's just bad game design.

I feel bad because she put so much time into playing this game too. I'm considering getting action replay or something similar just for that game.

If you are talking about that blue beam it shoots, just run away. It actually has a really simple pattern, even if you have a low weapon you will beat it eventually.

I think you're thinking of phase two, right? (I've only read about it from the FAQ.)

Anyway, she's still on on the first phase of the final boss. He does an attack (albeit a weak one) that hits you regardless of where you are or what you're doing. But she's also not too familiar with using the controller so repeatly quick movements and such are little difficult for her to pull off. She didn't "target" enemies for the longest time... and I think she still doesn't make use of the block. haha. But hey, she made it this far...

Ok, then one more word of advice (since I very recently beat it) is to use the stamina drink. It will raise your defense and offense so the unblockable attack will hit but not do any damage.

I haven't beaten a game in a while because of my short attention span and, like someone said earlier, constantly getting new games because of cheap deals. 3 in particular that really bugs me...

FFVII - zipped through the game and had to deal with Sephiroth with weak characters.

FFVIII - went through half the game with no clue what Guardian Forces were. I finally asked my friend what I should do after consistently being killed midpoint through the game, and then I found out what they were. I started the game over (getting GFs this time around), but when I reached the same point I had before, school took over my life again :p (This was like 6 summers ago.) It's been sitting in front of me for the last 6 years, waiting to be finished. I probably don't even have the save files anymore.

Half-Life - Got to the point where you're on the side of a cliff being shot at by a helicopter. I walked through a pipe using kneeling (? can't remember), and (after the screen does its "Loading..." thing) my character "stands" and gets stuck in the pipe. I couldn't fix the bug, and after trying some other patches, my save files wouldn't work.... ARGH

I gave up on FFTA last week after 98 hours of gaming time. I beat the game but apparently there's 1 location and 150 missions left. That meant that all I could do was walk around the map waiting for new missions to pop up. I don't think I'm going to resume play as I traded it through TGN the other day =/

I once had this one game, I don't know if anyone has heard of it...it's called Pong. Anyway, this game really kicked ass, but it was jst too goddamn hard, so I had to give up on it. It's been sitting in my closet for the past twenty years now. Maybe one day I'll pick it up again and beat it for good!

cripes i stop playing games a soon as i throw a controller. when i almost accidentaly threw my wavebird outta window due to metroid prime itslef, i put the game down. same thing happened with ridely in the same game, but a few months later, i picked it up and beat him n one try. i just have to take breaks or ill break something.

Breaks are key. I can't count how many times I gave up in frustration after numerous deaths against some boss, level or whatnot, then tried again either a few hours later or the next day and beat the hell out of it in one try. Whether its 2 hours or 20 years mental composure is what you need to beat the game and succeed in life in general... I should sell some self-help books now...

Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania may be hard, but they are hardly unfair. The games control very well and demand quite a bit of skill and timing. I've beaten both, but I did not do so for the first time on either for quite a while. Two of my favorite games of all time, and that's partly due to the challenge (I like challenging games).

I must agree... when I was 14, i couldn't beat Ninja Gaiden 1 at all but I played the game on and off and I finally beat it when i turned 15 :p

It's very rare for me NOT to give up on a game ... usually after only a few hours. I own about 160 games and I've only put a decent amont of time (ten hours or more) into about 50 games in my life, including ones I no longer own.

I just played a half hour worth of Orta and didn't even manage to beat the first level. I think I'm losing my gaming skills, this isn't the first game I've been crappy at in the past few years. Tempted to give up though, probably won't because its a good, fun game.

I've made a lot of progress in Wind Waker since I started this thread. I finished the Fire Mountain, Earth Temple, and Ice Ring, and I'm at the Wind Temple now.

Does this game EVER end?

No; you get to sail around the ocean endlessly and be bored the fuck out for a few million hours. Seriously; finding the pieces is the most boring thing ever...besides Mark of Kri. ;)

gave up on what i know as the final boss in finaly fantasy 7, kept dying so i gave up for a while, a little while one of my bros deleeted the file off the memo card and i never finished that game....always regretted it.

Same here, I do this with RPG all the time. I stop FFX right before you go off to fight sin (I wanted to level up more but that got too boring and I lost interest). Suikoden 2 I stopped right before the vamipre guys story line started up, it just was a total diversion and slowed the main story down that I got bored with it. Then of course FF: Tactics, this has to be like the longest game in the world, I stop and try to advance the story but I have to do too many random battles and those are like 15-45mins each. So I would just stop it and then I would pick it up later and completly forget what the story line was, I've done that about 5 times with that game. I'm just glad I beat Chronos Cross, there was almost a time where I gave up though, when serge became lynx it wasn't as fun to me, but I'm glad stuck with it.
