Are some avatars getting out of hand?

O-Dog

CAGiversary!
Now far be it for me to blow the whistle on just what is considered obscene, but with the advent of easily croppable images of women known for their "special talents," and suggestive .gif animation being more and more loopable, CAG forums might be becoming a little too NWS or NSFW (whichever acronym you prefer) for comfort.

So anyway, as CAGs continue to push the envelope on just how much their avatars show (and, might I add, push on, image croppers and animators alike), I just wanted to put up a collective finger to the proverbial breeze and gauge everyone's sentiments.

I just figured I'd do this before I put in a supply request for a shorter computer chair or have my desk raised.

And, yes, this was a furtive attempt to bait all CAGs with racy avatars to post here, one-upping each other until Cheapy or another mod reasons "it's gone too far."

everyone finds different things offensive, i think porn is a good thing so pics of pornstars dont offend me, they may offend you, does that mean I should not be allowed to see it because it offends you, no, like punq said just turn it off

I don't have a problem with mature avatars and sigs. But some have gone too far at times. You can turn them off if you're personally offended, but should Cag's have to turn off avatars for the 1/2 percent that go too far?

Just use some common sense, no sexual acts, no nudity, and no gratuitous acts of violence or uses of profanity.

I take it you're a fan of the FCC :twoguns:

NOpe, I haven't seen any too offensive on here. Haven't seen any nudity in avatars or signatures though they are a little suggestive *ahem sblymnlcrymnl ahem* but it's onlyt what comes to your mind. Nothing on here has been graphic. Besides you can always turn them off. I had to do that once because one sig was kind of buggin out my browser.

Nothing is too offensive for me. Everyone is entitled to have whatever sig/avatar they want. If you don't like them, turn them off.

Not at all. Just curious as to seeing what's allowed on this board versus others, etc. etc. This mostly came up from a conversation I had with a friend when we started speculating about how (shudder) that abomination of a forum gamefaqs would be if they allowed avatars. The trinity, suggestive, and lueshi-esque images would be up so quick it'd make people's heads spin.

Thanks to Mr. Segal for the board move, and punq for the tip on disabling avatars (which, to the best of my knowledge, isn't always an option on some forums).

That's exactly why I turn off signatures and avatars. It cuts down on loading times and makes the board look cleaner. That's just my personal preference, some people enjoy seeing other people's avatars.

I think so sice there are a lot of "kids" that frwequent this site. I think if it was just adults that would be fine but you got to think of everyone. I personally like to see them :) but does make it hard to read at work or at home with the wife. Everytime she comes in the room there is sublims new pron girl on the screen she swaers up and down im looking at porn facked by cag. Well not such a bad idea video games and porn together! Hey did it work for defender?

There's a big difference between being "personally offended", and having the common sense that certain things are not appropriate for a public website. Yes, I think the animated gifs of strippers and such have gone too far. If you want Pr0n, then that's fine, but I think it should be kept seperate from CAG. It's common sense people, show some public respect. I shouldn't have to turn of all sigs and avatars because some jerkoff wants to put a naked lady in his sig.
You can turn them off if you're personally offended, but should Cag's have to turn off avatars for the 1/2 percent that go too far?
That's how I feel. I personally like to see a pic to associate people with and I like knowing what people are interested in. So I don't think that one should have to turn them all off in order to avoid seeing the few bad seeds. If you really want people to know that you are into porn, just type it in your sig...

Some other points are, like someone already said: there is not an age restriction of people who visit this site. And children should not be viewing such images whether they want to or not. And this is a site based upon finding cheap videogame (not porn) deals for our fellow gamers. You should only be viewing bad material a) if you are old enough and b) if you want to. So if you really want to see it, go to a porn site (not that i condone such actions, but that is your right).

And as bad as sblymnlcrymnl's is, there are some that I have seen that are far worse (i.e. the person who has the gif of a woman stripping in their sig and a pretty much naked backside for an avatar).

And someone mentioned something about ones that slow down the computer or something. I at times work with computers that are pretty nice powerhouses and these even have choppiness problems with some peoples' animations.

I definitely feel that there should be some restrictions on what people can have. Or at least an option to turn off only the ones that could be considered porn-ish as well as the ones that slow down computers.

If you can't tell, this has been an issue I've had for awhile now.

I agree.

Hey CheapyD! You need to install the V-Chip in these forums ;). In all seriousness though, there should be a sort of 'rated' avatar. That way you could filter the offensive ones.

Are some avatars getting out of hand? Well, racier and raunchier avatars have popped up recently, and for a web site that restricts cursing with an auto-filter, it's somewhat surprising that this sort of thing was over-looked. Is anyone bothered by it...well, how many people would be bothered by rampant use of the F-word in these forums? Most of you side-step the swearing filter as it is, with oh-so clever punctuation-adjustments, so obviously not. And obviously most of you aren't bothered by slutty avatars, either.

If you abide by majority rule, well....you seldom get family-friendly material. Especially on a web site pandering to games which in turn pander to a predominantly young male audience. This thread might be informally polling the group concensus, but obviously this community doesn't establish the morality guidelines here, or these threads would be rife with profanity. And if these racy avatars were bothering robo-man, he would've discreetingly PM'ed the guilty parties already.

Seems reasonable to me too.

I really don't want to see naked chicks and really bad language and stuff like that on this site. A kid like me really doesn't want to have to be hyponotized by ryonsk's sig and it really is unneccesary for sigs and avatars to be about porn since if that's really what your most interested in, then I'm sure you'd be posting on a message board about porn by now instead of video games.

Bottom line is, I don't want to see these kinds of things on this site since I visit it often. And once these things get too out of hand, without changing, I'll probally never really post in these forums any more and become a lurker, just looking for deals.

I'll just try to find a different forum that has nice people and are more respectful of others preferences.

im not offended, but even if someone is, do the smart thing and just turn them off! its personal preference and thats why the option was PUT there to begin with!

It's still not right that one should have to not see anyone's pics just because of a few uncouth individuals.

I am kind of hoping people will tone it down a little as well. I really do not care all that much what people have in their sig. but I think that people are going to start trying to 1up each other

also I do feel we should respect kids on this site a little more. I am 19 and could care less, but if you have someone who is younger and their parent's walk in and see a sig. with a porn star flashing some flesh, that kid could be getting a big ration of shit from their parents and no longer be allowed to post on CAG
I just wanted to put up a collective finger to the proverbial breeze and gauge everyone's sentiments.
My finger is always up to the breeze.

The avatars don't particulary offend me, but I do like avatars that show more about a person than "I like boobies". Though I have to admit, I get a little embarrassed reading this site at an on campus computer and somebody's raunchy avatar/sig pops up on the screen.
I do like avatars that show more about a person than "I like boobies".
i agree, i mean, im gunna guess that 98% of people that post here are guys. and im gunna guess 98% of them are straight guys (not discriminatory, i just dont know many gay gamers guys)

so when roughly 97% of the boards population is the same sex and sexual orientation, it can be natrually assumed they like boobs.

boobs are over-rated anyways ^^

I don't find anything here offensive, however I do find it embarassing to look through the forums with sigs/avatars enabled when I'm at school in a lab.
It doesn't bother me, but if it keeps potentional posters from posting then I guess its a problem. And it would be bad to lose some old time posters like sj41 just because of some girls in sigs that I don't really have to see on this site at all.
Yeah, you don't want to lose the old spammer of the site.

It's just that because of things like parents walking into the room and when some younger friends are over, I really don't appreciate some sigs and avatars. While others, such as WSB's avatars make me laugh because they're funny and shows who he is. He's a really FUUNNNY GUUY! :)

No problem with being offended. All avatars and sigs I have seen have not crossed that "line". And Taylor Rain is so yummy.

I dunno, if I were a girl, I'd be laughing at all the people who feel a need to idolize a porn star in their sig.

I think it's a little out of place, but I don't care enough to...well, care.

Sigs more than Avatars, just cause they can be larger. I for one am not offended. But I see why some people would be. Personally I think they are kinda funny.

Who, me?
Oh sh!t I love the new avatar sblymnlcrymnl!

Where do you turn off avatars and sigs?
Well when at my job and on campus the 1st thing I typically do is switch sigs/avatars off. So what irks me most is when someone justs outright posts a picture, but thankfully that doesn't happen very much. The sigs and avatars only personally bother me when they are too big, once again not a huge problem on CAG. However I can see where some may be taken back or offended by some a couple of sigs/avatars.

i see nothing wrong with anyones sigs or avatars and i like sblymnlcrymnl's sigs and avatars especially the aria giovanni set or what ever you want to call it
I don't see anything offensive about a single avatar or sig of any member.
 :notworth:

Coming from you, crickett. Nice sig, btw.

I don't mind at all, if your wife/GF/mom/grandma looks over your sholder while on CAG and thinks your looking at porn then tell them your not. And if they don't belive you then turn off the computer and deal with your trust issues.

And if your at work and at CAG then turn the pics off. And shouldn't your ass be working at work ? I know I don't get to surf the site when I'm at work. So I don't have alot of simpanthy for people who surf CAG at work.
