CAG's shipwreck & mrs. shipwreck preview the new releases for the week of October 31st, 2007. This week's clear winner is Guitar Hero III, but there are a few other potential hits mixed in amongst the onslaught of games aimed at the Kidz Bop crowd.

Barbie as the Island Princess Dev. Activision Pub. Activision Systems: GBA, DS, PS2, Wii MSRP: $29.99-$39.99
While this game reportedly is coming to stores this week, there isn't much information about it. The plot is that Barbie (starring as Rosella) is shipwrecked on an island and raised by small woodland creatures and elephants. Luckily, we're smart individuals who can extrapolate the rest from other Barbie games. First, there will undoubtedly be a cute side-kick. Second, Barbie will be dressed up in some fabulous and sparkly attire. Third, the game is based on a DVD. Fourth, since Barbie is The Island Princess, it's likely that there will be an Island Prince. Fifth, there will be mini-games. - mrs. ship

Battalion Wars 2 Dev. Kuju Entertainment Pub. Nintendo Systems: Wii MSRP: $49.99
Another brightly colored cartoon-esque war has begun and this time around it's taken to the seas and the interwebs. That's right, unlike the first console game in this real-time strategy series, Battalion Wars 2 includes naval vehicles and online multiplayer that features both versus and co-op modes. Unfortunately, there's no local multiplayer, no way to communicate with online opponents/teammates, and the graphics are starting to look more than a tad bit dated. Fans of the first game will probably feel right at home though and will certainly get enjoyment out of the improvements. - ship

Best Deal:
Deep Discount is offering Battalion Wars 2 for $44 shipped.

Bee Movie Game Dev. Beenox Pub. Activision Systems: DS, PS2, Wii, 360 MSRP: $29.99-$49.99
This third-party action-adventure game is obviously a tie in to the Dreamworks movie released this past weekend. The plot of the movie (and the game) is that Barry the Bee (voiced by Jerry Seinfeld) doesn't just want to be a honey-maker. Instead, he leaves the hive to explore the outside world. Enter tons of collectables, side-missions, flying levels, and even some driving levels. The demo follows the general template of quicktime events using the analog stick, quicktime events using the action buttons, Jerry Seinfeld yells "Watch out!", cut-scene, repeat, repeat, Jerry Seinfeld yells "Watch out!", repeat, repeat, repeat, end demo. - mrs. ship

Best Deal:
Deep Discount is offering the Bee Movie Game for $44 shipped on either the Xbox 360 or the Wii.

Ben 10: Protector of Earth Dev. High Voltage Software Pub. D3 Systems: DS, PSP, PS2, Wii MSRP: $29.99-$39.99
Ben 10 is a TV show on Cartoon Network featuring a young boy who is really a superhero. Sounds like it would make a great game, huh? The cool thing about being a superhero is that you can change into a variety of alter-egos, which does make for some cool tricks. That said, this platformer is aimed at a young audience, as is the unchallenging game-play. It should be a solid game for it's target audience, which means you'll be buying it for your kid. - mrs. ship

Buzz Jr.! Jungle Party Dev. Relentless Software Pub. SCEA Systems: PS2 MSRP: $29.99, $39.99
So the little ones won't feel left out, there's Buzz! Junior. This quiz show franchise is originally from England, but this title differs in that it's more of a mini-game compilation than a quiz show game. It has Jungle themes, crazy characters, mini-games (of course) and can be purchased with four Buzz! controllers. The reviews from Europe claim that while this title is cute, it's mainly a kiddie button-masher with little lasting fun. - mrs. ship

Buzz! The Mega Quiz Dev. Relentless Software Pub. SCEA Systems: PS2 MSRP: $29.99, $39.99
British quiz games make excellent US quiz games, minus the stuff about the queen and all the football references. Over 5,000 questions about pop culture, some with movie clips and celebrity photos, are included. For a quiz show game, this title has gotten decent to solid review scores. Purchase the game alone or included with four Buzz! controllers/buzzers. - mrs. ship

Cars: Mater-National Championship Dev. Rainbow Studios Pub. THQ Systems: GBA, DS, PS2, PS3, 360 MSRP: $29.99-$49.99
Lightning McQueen and the gang are back to race around Radiator Springs. This sequel borrows a lot from the first game including a lot of the same locales, but there are new areas to explore as well and an entire new cast of characters including European cars are introduced. These are enjoyable arcade racing games for the entire family, so if you are looking for something to play with the kids, I'd recommend picking it up. Or if you are just looking to boost that Gamerscore, but who would do that? - ship

Best Deal:
Deep Discount is offering the Cars: Mater-National Championship for $44 shipped on either the Xbox 360 or the Wii.

Dementium: The Ward Dev. Renegade Kid Pub. Gamecock Systems: DS MSRP: $29.99
Now here's a unique entry for the DS library. Dementium is a first-person shooter/survivial horror game that features one of the most impressive looking 3D engines the DS will likely ever see. The game looks plenty creepy and is set in a rundown hospital (not the most unique environment for a horror game, but creepy none-the-less). The use of the stylus to aim either your flashlight or you firearm seems like a natural fit so I think this is worth at least a glance if you are looking for something vastly different than what we've become accustomed to playing on the DS. - ship

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness Dev. Nippon Ichi Soft Pub. NIS America Systems: PSP MSRP: $39.99
The original cult hit strategy game gets shrunken down for the PSP. And by shrunken, I of course mean that a lot of content has been added and that this looks like it will be the definitive version of the game. As if the PS2 version didn't have enough to keep you busy for over 80 hours, the PSP version has added a multiplayer mode and a new story line that features Etna as the lead protagonist. And of course there's plenty of exploding penguins and humorous dialogue to go around as well. - ship

:psp: Purchase At Amazon $39.99 (Free shipping)

Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey Dev. Papaya Studio Pub. Disney Interactive Systems: Wii MSRP: $39.99
(Deja Preview) This game is pretty similar to Magical Jewels, but instead of being the princesses, the gamer interacts with them in their individual Disney worlds. There's a two player mode that's geared towards letting little girls play with their gamer moms. Thank goodness we don't have kids yet. - mrs. ship

Dr. Seuss: How the Grinch Stole Christmas Dev. Destination Software Pub. Destination Software Systems: DS MSRP: $19.99
This game is based on the original animated movie, not like the live-action based Grinch games formerly found lining clearance bins. This platform title has some puzzles built into it, as you play as the Grinch sneaking around trying to steal presents and holiday joy. Look for some stealth missions and some mini-games featuring the Whos. All in all, it should make a nice stocking-stuffer. - mrs. ship

El Tigre Dev. THQ Pub. THQ Systems: DS MSRP: $29.99
Again with the TV show-based games? This one is based on El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera from Nickelodeon. The nicest thing about the show is the unique art style, but there are some cool things about the game-play too. Many is the son of a super-hero and the grandson of a super-villan. Thus, there's a large moral dilemma from the get-go. Part of the game involves helping Manny choose between using his powers for good or evil. Your other big choice this week will be whether to buy El Tigre or Ben 10. - mrs. ship

:ds: Purchase At Amazon $27.99 (Free shipping)

Garfield Gets Real Dev. Destination Software Pub. Destination Software Systems: DS MSRP: $19.99
The plot behind this creative DS/Wii game is that Garfield has figured out how to get out of his comic strip and into real life. Unfortunately, if he doesn't come back, his comic will be cancelled. So, you are left playing as Garfield trying to return to his colorfully-drawn world. There's a companion DVD also available for purchase, and the movie AND the game are CG, so the graphics are different from what we've seen before. As far as the game-play, your guess is as good as mine. - mrs. ship

Guitar Hero & Guitar Hero II Pack Dev. Harmonix Pub. Activision Systems: PS2 MSRP: $59.99
Conveniently packaged for those late to the party. Now if they'd only break down and just release the original Guitar Hero for the Xbox 360. - ship

Best Deal:
There don't seem to be any specific deals for Guitar Hero & Guitar Hero II Pack.

:ps2: Purchase At Amazon $59.99 (Free shipping)

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Dev. Neversoft Pub. Activision Systems: PS2, PS3, 360, Wii MSRP: $49.99-$99.99
With enough different SKU's to make both Microsoft and Sony envious, Guitar Hero III beats Rock Band to the shelves and proves that, yeah, we're going to buy both. Neversoft has handled the reigns of the series admirably and the note progressions feel just as spot on as ever (if not better). A lot of the thrash metal that plagued Guitar Hero II has been stripped out and replaced with more recognizable classic and modern rock tunes. With the online multiplayer and new boss battles, this truly feels like a refined Guitar Hero game and it's easy to see that this series has some life left in it even in the shadow of the impending Rock Band. - ship

Best Deal:
So many SKU's, so little time to figure out what the best deal is. I do know that Amazon is offering the Xbox 360 game only version for $55 shipped and Deep Discount is offering the PS2 game only version for $44 shipped.

High School Musical: Sing It! Dev. Disney Interactive Pub. Disney Interactive Systems: PS2, Wii MSRP: $39.99, $49.99
They should have just been honest and titled this game High School Musical: Buy It! Honestly, if you know a girl who is between the ages of 2 and 14, she will love and highly covet this game. It's a karaoke game in which all the songs from High School Musical (the original) AND High School Musical 2 are included! OMG!!! With all the merchandising this movie has generated, these tween stars should have their own currency soon. - mrs. ship

John Woo's Stranglehold Dev. Midway Chicago Pub. Midway Systems: PS3 MSRP: $59.99, $69.99
(Deja Preview) Max Payne meets a Crisco covered world in this follow-up to John Woo's "Hard Boiled". Slip-slide your way gracefully across countertops, bannister railings, and pretty much anything else that will make shooting someone in the jugular a slow-motion thing of beauty. Chock full of action and... uhm... more action, Stranglehold looks to have plenty of fodder to keep you entertained when you need to take a break from all that classic 16th century British literature you've been catching up on. - ship

Manhunt 2 Dev. Rockstar London - Rockstar North Pub. Rockstar Games Systems: PS2, PSP, Wii MSRP: $29.99
The highly controversial kill-fest (that will probably be discussed more in the general media than in the gaming community) has finally been released with an "M" rating. It's pretty much more of the same, so if you enjoyed the first game's ultra-violence then feel free to once again lurk around in the shadows with your plastic bag and shards of glass. Now with Wii-controls (to make you happy) and extra grainy filters (to make you not see bad stuff)! - ship

Naruto: Rise of a Ninja Dev. Ubi Soft Montreal Pub. Ubi Soft Systems: 360 MSRP: $59.99
This week's Naruto game could be the end all, be all of Naruto games (don't I wish). Ubi Soft Montreal has actually created a game with the possibility to appeal to long-time fans and demon-fox virgins alike. This is a compelling package that not only includes the latest in a long line of Naruto fighting games, but also a full-fledged adventure game that follows the original storyline of the Manga. Add in the fact that this is, without a doubt, the prettiest cel-shaded orange jumpsuit that I have ever seen and I almost think that I might try this game someday. Next thing you know, I'll be setting up an appointment for a headband fitting. - ship

Neves Dev. Yuke's Pub. Yuke's Media Creations Systems: DS MSRP: $29.99
Chances are that at some point during your youth, someone set you down in front of a few pieces of wood shaped like various geometric shapes and told you to combine those pieces to form something that vaguely represented a real-world object such as a house or a goose. These my friends are Tangrams and they were supposed to hone our problem solving skills. Well, now there is a splinterless version available called "Neves" and it allows you to make digital silhouettes of the house and the goose and 498 other things that aren't a house or a goose. There's probably a heart... I vaguely remember making a heart after the house and the goose. So 497 other puzzles await you in addition to the house and the goose and the heart. - ship

Ratatouille: Food Frenzy Dev. THQ Pub. THQ Systems: DS MSRP: $29.99
It's Cooking Mama meets Pixar in this new DS title. Of course, there will be cooking mini-games, but there's also the fun of interacting with the newest Disney characters, plus puzzles and other non-cooking mini-games. This title is one to buy for the younger generation, so it's game-play is simple but not repetitive. It should keep your rugrats entertained for a while and be worth the $30. - mrs. ship

Best Deal:
Amazon is offering Ratatouille: Food Frenzy for $28 shipped.

:ds: Purchase At Amazon $27.99 (Free shipping)

Shrek the Third: Ogres & Dronkeys Dev. WayForward Technologies Pub. Activision Systems: DS MSRP: $29.99
Because DS games flow like water and DreamWorks isn't done making money off of Shrek yet, we have this new title. *Spoiler Alert: In the third Shrek film, Shrek and Fiona have triplets, and Donkey and the Dragon have a horde of flying creatures. This game combines both broods and allows the gamer to train and play with these small creatures. Of course, there are adventures thrown in too, but it seems like a lame, well-disguised Shrek pet simulator to me. - mrs. ship

The Simpsons Game Dev. EA Redwood Shores Pub. Electronic Arts Systems: DS, PSP, PS2, PS3, 360, Wii MSRP: $29.99-$59.99
Humor abounds in this sarcastic, colorful, classically Simpson-esque action-adventure game. Unfortunately, so do frustrating camera angles. Playing as Bart, Homer, Marge, Lisa, and even Maggie offers lots of varied game-play. Each character has his or her own special skills and collectable icons, and each level has a series of video-game cliches that Comic Book Guy will give you points for finding. Each level is a parody of a well-known video game (from Dig Dug to Medal of Honor), and the humor will please true fans. But, the game-play (especially the aforementioned camera angles) can be frustrating. Playing with two players helped make the game-play a bit more fluid and less annoying. A great fan service title with lots of creativity, well-worth your money? Yes. Take two ibuprofen prior to playing so your head doesn't explode? You betcha. - mrs. ship

Timeshift Dev. Saber Interactive Pub. Vivendi Universal Systems: 360 MSRP: $59.99
The delayed and revamped Timeshift finally clocks in and does so in a season crammed with first-person shooters. It's your pretty standard shooter fare with a few time effects like slow motion, time stop, and time rewinding. For some reason it feels like F.E.A.R. set in a World War II type environment... but in the future. You know it really is trying to set itself apart from the crowd when on the latest Major Nelson podcast one of the developers basically just came out and said that they changed the entire direction of the project because they didn't think it would sell well with the general public due to it being unconventional. Well, problem fixed... at least the unconventional part. Regardless, it seems to be a decent shooter released at the wrong time. - ship

Virtua Fighter 5 Dev. SEGA AM2 Pub. SEGA Systems: 360 MSRP: $59.99
SEGA's technical fighter tests the online arena for the first time with plenty of options and, according to early reviews, very little lag. The Xbox 360 version also benefits from the latest arcade conversion which has made several tweaks that have fine tuned what was already an extremely balanced game. Also new to this addition are hundreds of new items to play dress-up with so you can give Akira that floral hat you've had your eye on. - ship

Viva Pinata: Party Animals Dev. Krome Studios Pub. Microsoft Systems: 360 MSRP: $49.99
This game could have been a glorious cash-in/Viva Pinata version of Mario Party. Instead, it's mini games featuring four pinatas (and not even the best four) with no board game. Granted, some of the mini games are good but the others are confusing and poorly explained. On the bright side, the graphics are colorful and there are even well-placed tidbits of humor within the voice acting. But overall, I feel like this game could have been more, so much more. Playing the demo just leaves me asking Ship when the next "real" Viva Pinata game comes out. - mrs. ship

On The DL with the Shipwrecks

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Systems: Wii MSRP: $5
Roam around Transylvania and collect Dracula's bodily organs so that you can revive him and then kill him for good. Whew, that's one vampire we'll never have to worry about again. - ship

Magician Lord Systems: Wii MSRP: $9
A shining example of the NEO GEO non-fighting game library. Magician Lord is a scrolling platformer that immediately harkens comparisons to Altered Beast due to your ability to transform into different forms by collecting orbs. However, with better controls, better visuals, and more focus on projectile attacks, Magician Lord puts the Beast back in its grave. - ship

Samurai-Ghost Systems: Wii MSRP: $6
A lot like Magician Lord, if Magician Lord were terrible. - ship

Mutant Storm Empire Systems: Wii MSRP: $10
The follow-up to one of the first twin-stick shooters on Xbox Live Arcade features familiar room-based combat as you take on swarms of enemies and bosses. This time around, the loading between rooms has been eliminated and online co-op play has been implemented. Like in the original, the large number of difficulty settings add up to a lot of replay value. That's important because you just don't know how long you're going to have to wait for another dual analog shooter to come out. - ship

Feedback:
Did we miss a good sale on a game? Did we miss previewing a game completely? Well, the only way that everyone can know a better deal is out there is to let us know about it. Post deals you've found or games that we missed in the thread so that CAGs can make sure they are getting the absolute best prices on new releases.

Wow, shipwreck, you must have been the best fisherman on the block :p

...so true about the camera on The Simpsons game...god Hit and Run felt more fun.

Worst Purchase Ever!

Tom Morello is the guy from Rage Against the Machine

Heh, what deja vu. I listened to the CAGcast, then the Foreplay, and there were at least 3 similarities that made me laugh.

1. Wombat and Mrs. Ship both sneezed. Wombat had more of a "what the...?! Did something just get hit by a car?" variety, and Mrs. Ship's was more of the " *cricket cricket*.... KABOOM!" kind, lol.

2. Welcome to the Navy. Obviously a Navy filled CAGcast, but Mr. Ship also mentioned how Battalion Wars 2 just happens to have some new Naval fleet (and not to mention all of the obvious "Down with the Ships" ect.).

3. Hat party! Okay, CAGcast went over some new releases, but is hats really the only thing we care about Virtua Fighter 5? (Apparently the answer is "yes" for Wombat and Mr. Ship, lol.)

Well, and now that I think about it... I'll have to add another.

4. Sponsors, I think you picked the wrong show. Shouldn't the sponsors of the shows be reversed? Navy, should be with the CAG Forplay with Mr. and Mrs. Shipwreck, and GoDaddy.com should be with the CAGcast, with CheapyD and Wombat.

Navy/Shipwrecks
GoDaddy/CheapyD

See where I'm trying to go with this? Strange...

Anyways! Thanks as usual!

In regards to the Buffy games, I believe Chaos Bleeds takes place at some point late in the 5th season, since I read somewhere that Buffy's mom had already passed away when the games starts.

Before it went OOS, the 360 GHIII bundle was $10 off (as was the PS2 bundle).

I say since Mrs. Shipwreck complains about having to review games like Barbie and Hannah Montana, she should be forced to review both Clive Barker's Jericho and Dementium: The Ward.

BTW - Is that a picture of Shipwreck holding a fish?

great show this week. it had a very nice and relaxing atmosphere which i liked. ^^

and mrs. shipwreck is correct, a 4th Shrek movie is in the works and the title is Shrek Goes Fourth (no, i'm not joking). 2010 release, be prepared Shippy :)

Poor Mrs. Shipwreck. The amount of crap you have to review sucks. You guys need to go ahead and have a Shipwreck Jr so he/she can review all of the kiddie games. Maybe you could pawn this stuff off on a niece or nephew?
shrek goes fourth? get ready for some crappy games...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I have mad fishing skills.

And whiter skin than Conan O'Brien!

Oh - make Mrs. Shipwreck review Silent Hill Origins as well.

in the picture with mr. shipwreck as a kid holding the fish, it looks like he has a racoon tail. no seriously. look at him.

Ship, you should give the Mrs less crappy kids games to do. Sure it is funny every week when she has to talk about a dozen games that end in zed or feature cartoon network/nickelodeon/disney/etc but come on man!

With three kids of my own and a game player (at least during the christmas break season) I will say that I appreciate the kids game reviews!! No one ever wants to buy these but when Christmas and Birthdays arrive these reviews are great to find the game that I may actually have a chance of slightly liking as well. You have no idea how much time I have put into helping each of my girls win Barbie Horse Adventure.....AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!

Whew!
Not being into GH3, this week is FINALLY a week when I don't have any "must-buys" that I haven't already paid for (I pre-ordered Disgaea, I'm a member of the cult ;)). I think the biggest things working against Disgaea this week are: 1) there are so many games coming out this season that are must-buys, few people will want to spend the time/money on a port of a classic and 2) there are a bunch of turn-based strategy RPG's that have come out for the PSP lately, including Jeanne D'Arc and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Though I thought it was funny that when I went to my local GameStop to pick up my copy of Disgaea today, they had Barbie Island Princess behind the glass, in the same place they had the "hot" titles they were trying to showcase. The guy behind the counter said it was, oddly enoug, a bunch of older males buying that game. I'm hoping that's men buying the game for their young daughters, hoping to turn them into gamers...

if someone can tell me how many barbie video games their are? if anyone can individually name them here, I'll give them ALL of my coveted gaming collection
eta on new show?
Show's done, but Libsyn's down so I can't post it. I'll try again in about 4 hours.

Ship, I just completed the Simpsons game and saw no Dig Dug parody in there, only a brief mention when they are in a Gauntlet-like level and Homer says it is Dig Dug . So, anyway, might want to replace Dig Dug in the writeup with Missile Command, Frogger, Space Invaders, or Gauntlet - each of which is more or less recreated in part of the game. Yeah, I know it is a bit late but I just finished it...

Could someone please tell me the name of the opening music?:)
Sounds like Katamari, but I have no way of guessing beacuse Beautiful Katamari is not relased here in Europe:cry:

The opening music is from Disgaea. That's a shame about Beautiful Katamari though.
