favorite strategy games?

CAGiversary!
I enjoyed the SimCity series when it first came out, and more recently I've tried Civilization 3 and I'm lovin' every minute of it. What other strategy-based games have you, the blessed CAG community, found to be particularly enjoyable?

Are we also talking RTS, because Rise of Nations is my favorite (although Battle for Middle Earth might change that when it comes out).

I'm really loving Fire Emblem for GBA.
And Final Fantasy Tactics is a must play for any PSOne/PS2 owner.

As for RTS, there's always Warcraft 3. I'd recommend staying the hell away from Command and Conquer: Generals. I thought that was one of the worst RTS games in recent memory.

I thought that too, at first. Give it some time and it will really grow on you. At first it seemed like everything was far too weak defensively and far too strong offensively, but it makes for a very balanced game since it avoids the common pitfall of simbase. The three sides (sans the fact that both the Chinese and GLA are hideously rascists, albeit taken to such a point that it is satirical) are all very different, but very balanced. Give the game some time, and learn the intricacies of each side, and you will see how intricate the strategies can get especially with the add-on.

I was also a big fan of Age of Mythology when it came out. I kicked ass as the Egyptians, but I always wanted to kick ass as the Norse. They were just so cool, but I could never figure out how to effectively play as them.

Anyway, all time favorite strategy game (RTS at least) is Homeworld. The other Homeworld games (Cataclysm and 2) were good, but lacked the same wow-factor of the first. The 3-d strategy, the importance of formations, I loved it all. All time favorite turn based strategy game is probably Alpha Centauri, with nostalgia throwback to Civ II.

I don't do RTS, but my favorite Turn Based Strategy games are:
Final Fantasy Tactics [PS1/PS2].
Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death [PC]
I was sorely disappointed in HoMM IV.

Big fan of the Warcraft series. Warcraft III is great, and you can spend countless hours on multiplayer and the multiplayer mods (probably just like any other RTS game).

When it comes to strategy, I lean heavily towards the PC as the platform of choice.

#1 (by far) X-Com
#2 Civilization II
#3 Jagged Alliance
#4 HoMM 2
#5 Alpha Centauri

I don't know if it would apply but the first Rollercoaster Tycoon was fantastic.

Awesome... Awesome... Awesome... game. I keep hearing that a sequel is in the works. I hope that the rumors are true.

PC dominates for strategy games. In my opinion, by far the best are the Total War games, especially Medieval: Total War and most recently Rome: Total War.

Warcraft 3 is a great RTS also.

For turned based, Civ 3 and Heroes of Might and Magic III stand out for me (never really lived IV that much). I also loved Xcom and Master of Magic, I really wish those two would get remakes or sequels (never got into the Xcom sequels, I still think the original was the best).

The Warcraft Series (War2 > War3 > War1)
Starcraft
Civilization

I never really got into the Age of Empires series. Beautiful graphics, but there was just way too much going on at one time. I felt the same way with Rise of Nations, although that also was a very fun game. Also, for awhile the Myth series was considering a great change of pace when the RTS games were a big thing. Fun for awhile anyways.
