Please us this thread to discuss current & future Virtual Console games. Instead of making a specific thread about each game, just ask here. There are plenty of people here whom will help you out--just have some patience! All news & rumors in regards to the Virtual Console & WiiWare titles will be found here.

12/29/08: Happy Holidays and soon to be Happy New Year! Well gang, this is the last update for the year. I can not decide if it's an OK one, a crappy one, or a surprisingly well one. You decide. We get 1 VC game this week: Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II. We get another typical 2 WiiWare titles that are: Maboshi's Arcade (800 Points), and Cue Sports – Pool Revolution (500 Points). See you next thread!
12/22/08: Let's be honest: December on the Shop Channel kinda blows! One VC game AGAIN..Phantasy Star IV (Gen). That game is apart of the Sega Collection on PSP and will be in the Sonic's Ultimate Collection for 360/PS3--so be warned!! Oh, and 2 WiiWare titles came out this week. They are Tiki Towers (500 Points) and Fun! Fun! Minigolf (900 Points). Fun! Fun! eh? We'll see. (Ok, we won't.)
12/15/08: The "Meh" conties yet again!! Only 1 VC game Enduro Racer (SMS) along with 2 WiiWare titles; Big Kahuna Party (700 Points) and Strong Bad Episode 5 (1000 Points). Maybe next week, right?
12/08/08: The "eh" continues! This is good because we are bound for a good week eventually! Today, we get Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (SMS) for the VC and Brusier & Scratch (1000 Points) and Hockey Allstar Shootout (500 Points) are the 2 WiiWare titles this week.
12/01/08:: The month of December starts off kinda lame (as always). Metal Slug 2 (NeoGeo) is the only VC game, whereas Space Invaders Get Even (500 Points) and Pit Crew Panic! (800 Points) are the two WiiWare titles for the week. Ok.

November's Updates
11/24/08: Where's September? Another 'feh' week that ends another FEH month. Boogerman (Gen) is the only game on the VC, and Boingz (1000 Points) and Sudoku Challenge! (500 Points) are the WiiWare games this week. See? Feh.
11/17/08: Another week of meh. Oh well, more time for Animal Crossing: City Folk, right? Space Invaders (SNES) and Forgotten Worlds (Gen) show up on the VC, and Strong Bad Episode 4 (1000 Points) and Target Toss Pro: Bags (700 Points) arrive on WiiWare. Again--meh!
11/10/08: This week was kinda.. eh. Mega Man 3 (NES) is the only game for the VC and we get Brain Challenge (1000 Points) and Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam (1000 Points) for WiiWare. See? Nothing exciting!
11/03/08: So October was a great month, and now November is starting off AWFULLY 'meh'. We get 1 VC game, Space Harrier (SMS) and 2 WiiWare Games; Alien Crush Returns (800 Points) and Home Sweet Home (1000 Points). Oh well, there's always next week!

October's Updates
10/27/08: October is done, but the surprisingly good games on the Shop Channel are not. :rimshot: This week we only get ONE VC game, but that one game is Earthworm Jim (Gen). Lilty Hut

In before Super Mario RPG whining :)

Seriously, thanks for making a new thread. I look forward to the next year's worth of VC games.

Seriously, thanks for making a new thread. I look forward to the next year's worth of VC games.
No prob! I actually kind of enjoy it since I'm a really big fan of all this VC stuff. But this is going to be for WiiWare stuff TOO since they should be coming out in 2008. I guess we can only just wait..

Sexy looking system headers. I love the Neo Geo one. This thread (and it's now defunct ancestor) makes me want a Wii more than I can afford to at the moment.
Very nice work on the thread, keep up the awesome work :)

Now here is hoping to some quality VC/ Wii Ware releases for this year.
Me too. I hope to see some of the titles I've been waiting for a while.

Although, I don't expect we'll see anything "big" until after Brawl is released, other than maybe Smash Bros. (N64).

Spiffy new duds, lilboo! Thanks for keeping this updated :)

I just saw that Bubble Bobble came out yesterday... heck yes! I can't wait to download this. This was probably my favorite NES game as a kid... I rented it from the local movie place all the time, but never got to own it!

Nice new thread lilboo!

Anyway, as I asked in the other thread right before it closed; I have 2500 points, I'm thinking about getting Axelay or Cybernator but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a ton of VC games and I don't feel like listing them all so if someone suggests something I already have I'll let you know. It's just easier that way.

Hey, I've got a couple questions that might be answered elsewhere but what the heck they might fit in here:

1) Does anybody know if Nintendo ever got around to talking about making some of the Wii Shop games multiplayer/online? For example, Mario Kart 64 vs. my buddy who lives in Dallas.

2) Does anybody know if Nintendo ever got around to talking about making new/incremental additions to games (pseudo-sequels). Either enhanced graphics for games, or additional levels, etc.?

OP looks nice :) Definitely looking forward to the new year.

I think that implies yes to both of your questions, if I'm understanding them correctly.

Lets be clear, Virtual Console games is a no to both.

Wii Ware games is most likely a yes, Dr Mario Wii Ware has already been mentioned.

Thanks for this thread, it looks great ! I especially love the "NEW" you have next to the new games, I also didn't know that Bubble Bobble came out Monday! I have it on the PS One, but I think I will still have to DL this to play on the classic controller....it is a great game (but I've still never beaten it even though I've played it/had it since original release on the NES...but sadly can't find the NES version anymore (which is why the PS One version got purchased in the first place 10 years ago or so).
I think it would be easy for nintendo to make VC addons in Wii Ware.

Two comments:

1) For lilboo: I'm a newbie to Wii (I had a Wii Christmas!), maybe you could use the second reply you "saved" for a mini-FAQ on VC games. I have a limited understanding of how they work, I'm sure others also have questions. Maybe even a cut-and paste from the "full" FAQ. Things like, how much are points and how do you purchase them (are there ever deals?); what controllers are used (if I understand correctly you can use the Wii controller for NES games, and need the classic controller or a game cube controller for all the others), and how much/where to get the controllers (are game cube controllers still available?); how are they stored on the Wii console unit (how many can be stored at once?); how is the SD card used to store/backup VC games (or do you just delete them and redownload them)? etc etc etc

2) One of the first things I looked for when I saw the Wii supported older game systems was Dr Mario. Do I understand correctly it is coming back in some form?

thanks all!

1. Hi & welcome :). An FAQ isn't really a bad idea, but I don't think there's much to put. If other people feel that an FAQ would be appropriate, then maybe I'll work on it. If ANYTHING, any additional info on the VC go go into Strell's FAQ. I was thinking more along the lines of using the second page for posting the VC releases for Japan & Europe..but nothing is definite.

I'll do my best to answer everything you ask.

how much are points and how do you purchase them (are there ever deals?);

100 points = $1 (US Dollar, I'm assuming you're in the States). NES games are standard 500 points, which is $5. SNES & Gen are 800 points, are $8. Turbografx16 games are 600 points/$6. Turbografx CD are 800/$8. NeoGeo games are 900/$9. N64 games are 1000/$10. There are some premium games, check the list to see what games cost more. There usually are never any deals on it, because when you buy a 2000 Wii points card, you are just spending $20 to convert it into Nintendo money :). But SOMETIMES there are special sales.. so keep your eyes peeled into the Video Game Deals forum. You can also check out "Referral Central" and join some freebie sites to get free Wii Points (I earned like $180 last year, LOL) ALSO, you can buy your Wii points directly on your Wii on the shop channel using a credit card. You can buy them in different amounts. I forget the differences, but I think it's 1000, 2000, 3000, and 5000? I could be wrong.

what controllers are used (if I understand correctly you can use the Wii controller for NES games, and need the classic controller or a game cube controller for all the others), and how much/where to get the controllers (are game cube controllers still available?);

You can use the Wii Remote for NES games and Turbografx16/CD games. For SNES, Gen, NeoGeo, and N64 games you need to use the Classic Controller or Gamecube controller. The classic controller gets a lot of praise, so it IS highly recommended, especially for SNES games. Some N64 games do work better with the Gamecube controller, but the Classic isn't that bad. Having a Classic AND Gamecube controller isn't a bad idea to have. The Classic controller retails at $19.99, which isn't a bad price IMO. Again, check frequently in the Video Game Deals forum for anything special. I'm pretty sure it's not hard to find Gamecube controllers, but I can not speak from experience since I've had Wavebirds for years now :)

how are they stored on the Wii console unit (how many can be stored at once?); how is the SD card used to store/backup VC games (or do you just delete them and redownload them)? etc etc etc

Once you download a game, it becomes a channel. You run out of room when you run out of channel space (there are 48) OR if you run out of blocks of memory. I do not recall how many blocks are the default, but there's a lot (at first! ;) ) The SD card is only (currently) used for storage/back up. You go to your Wii Options and in the memory section you will see a tab for "SD Card". You can just click on a VC game (under channels) and click "Copy" and it will transfer over to the SD card. Same for the game data. If you run out of space, this is what you can do. ALSO, you can just delete games and redownload them again if you wish.

2) One of the first things I looked for when I saw the Wii supported older game systems was Dr Mario. Do I understand correctly it is coming back in some form?

Yes, Dr Mario is getting a "new" game as a WiiWare title. WiiWare titles will be downloadable games in the Wii Shop Channel. They are going to new & original games that uses the Wii's functionality. There are no set release dates for these WiiWare titles, but supposed to be in 2008 :)

Hope this helped you out!

Thanks, lilboo...

I guess the only follow-up would be -- is the only difference between a "regular" Wii game and "WiiWare" that one requires a disk and the other is downloaded directly?

thanks for your patience with my questions!

Joe
WiiWare titles will be downloaded, like Virtual Console games.

And what happens when all the Wiiware stuff comes out? Nintendo really needs to release an alternative storage device, deleting and redownloading is not going to cut it. It'd be fine if we could use SD cards and launch the game directly from that, but that's not going to happen I guess.

need advice:

do I pick up 1 or the other:

Paper Mario

or

Zelda (original one) + Internet Channel

(lilboo... maybe add internet channel to the only wii ware title... it does cost points...)

Paper Mario, if only because the original Zelda can be played on the Wii in some other form (Gamecube Zelda Collector's Disc).

paper mario, The wii internet is easy to set up (faster than a normal computer) but it is basiclly your normal browser, with limited abilities. Zelda on the NES has aged. It is rather boring compared to Oot or even Lttp. Plus Exstrike is right, You could almost find the collectors edition for that much. hope that helped.

I am officially jealous. According to the 'peans at the NeoGaf forum, they got another one game update. They got Harvest Moon for SNES.

I am jealous.

Whoo! I've been wanting to play SNES Harvest Moon for a looong time. Now I won't have to go looking for a damn cart!
