After a valiant struggle to stop the Chimera invasion in Europe, mankind must make its last stand on the shores of the United States. In the highly anticipated follow-up to the best-selling PS3 game, Resistance 2 places players in the heroic role of Sgt. Nathan Hale as he struggles against overwhelming odds to defend mankind from the unstoppable Chimera. While wrestling with this insidious war machine, Hale must also battle the virus raging inside of his own body that threatens to transform him into the very creatures he fights against.

Powered by Insomniac Games' third-generation PS3 technology, Resistance 2 will deliver unprecedented console gaming breakthroughs with a stand-alone eight-player, class-based online co-op campaign (up to 8 players) and 60-player online competitive multiplayer. An epic single-player campaign will feature a new weapons arsenal to combat giant boss encounters that increase the scale of the conflict to new heights. And players will enjoy a new level of community support.

 • Single-player campaign featuring large-scale conflict and epic boss battles take place across a variety of massive and unique environments in the United States
 • Breakthrough, class-based 8-player online co-op featuring a separate story-driven campaign
 • Unprecedented squad-based 60-player online competitive multiplayer battles

Insomniac has a new post on the Sony Blog with a brief look at multiplayer classes, at least in concept art form:

We’ve got a new Full Moon Show podcast up on the Insomniac Games site that readers of the PlayStation.Blog just might take an interest in ;-). This week’s show focuses on the process of going from concept to reality in Resistance 2.

We’ve also posted a couple of new concept art pieces for you to take a look at as well as the final logos for Resistance 2! The Spec Ops and Medic images come from our co-op multiplayer classes. On the show, we discuss these pieces and how important concept art is in the game creation process. In addition, we have one of our concept artists, Brian Yam, who was responsible for all the pretty pictures you drooled over in the Game Informer R2 cover story. Besides the Resistance 2 update, we talk to Lorne Lanning from Oddworld Inhabitants and we’ll update you on Insomniac community happenings – including the launch of a community-driven fan magazine.

Also – one other fun announcement for you Facebook fanatics – you can now become a fan of Resistance 2 on Facebook! Hit this link to check it out.

I really like the sound of the 8 player co-op. Also 60 player online sounds cool, I really enjoy Resistance and I diffenetly will be keeping and eye on Resistance 2.

Oh yes, this news is so awesome. I was hoping for online co-op, but I never expected 8. 60 players at once is awesome too. I cannot wait.

I will be the CAG clan leader for Resistance 2. ;)

Lets see if Halo 3, 4, 5, can even meet the standards set by Resistance. Cause right now, Resistance 2 has just blown away the competition. GOTY congrats!

The multi-squad play with each squad going after their own objectives sounds seriously awesome. I just hope there's keyboard/mouse support in this. DICE, start taking notes for BF3142.
I do hope the game can find another color to put on screen besides brown.
True dat. It actually made going through the campaign seem like a chore at times.

Wtf are you talking about? Please keep your pants on.

60 play online? WOW! I'll definately rent it at least to experience that.

Man, those guys LOVE to jam a whole bunch of stuff in their games.

Whats with Naughty Dog and Insomiac? They love putting content in their games. Uncharted was stuff full of extras. So was resistance.

That's why I love PS3, it has two of the best companies on their console.

I didn't know the game came out today.

Though, I wouldn't exactly say Halo has set the bar very high, except in the field of online matchmaking. Shocking that it hasn't become the standard on Live.

60 players... I don't see that working very well, though I've been hoping for a game with the balls to try.

wow, I was interested in this game, but now with 8-play co-op, 2 campaigns, and 60 people in multiplayer this game has taken the cake. Next year is looking like an even more amazing year for ps3.

Next year? It'll be out this fall. ;)

Calm down, toots. Keep your accolades in check. I admit I'm really intrigued by 60-player online multiplayer. VERY intrigued. But I'm going to be patient about it.

If it can be done, then awesome. Nevertheless, CoD4 has changed the standard for online FPS games, with the elements of strategy, leveling, matchmaking, etc., going into every game. It's quite brilliant, and the Resistance developers should, if they want to make a great game, crib some of the notes from Infinity Ward.

...on another note, crap. By the time Resistance hits GH status (a/k/a, the pricepoint I'm willing to buy it at), this will be out, and the online community for the game all but dead.

I think this may have taken the crown from Killzone as my most anticipated game of next year. PS3 is really kicking ass in 2008.

8 player co-op: awesome. Massively improved graphics and finally decent Chimera models: heck yea! 60 player matches: meh. I didn't care for the 40 player matches in the first game and I've played 64 player Battlefield 2 games and they weren't as fun as smaller matches. Your contributions just don't have much effect on the overall outcome of the battle.

OMG NO WAI!!!!

People forget that Black Hawk Down on the Xbox (no, not the 360) had ... 50? 60? ... players in MP. More =/= better, so I'm non-plussed by stuff we've already seen, but with slightly bigger numbers. What I DO think will be swank is the "groups with different goals" in multiplayer. That's a unique feature that if implemented well (If you get outgunned, can you contact an entirely different group for reinforcements?) could really help Resistance forge an identity of its own.

They definitely exceeded my expectations with Resistance 2. 60 players online is quite impressive, but I've never really been too keen on having tons of players in one game. The most I've had with online games have been 4v4 or 6v6 games. You feel a lot more important when there aren't as many on your team. But of course, I'll still have the option of playing 4v4 in Resistance 2, so I'm not complaining. And 8 player co-op is fucking awesome. It'll be interesting to see how this game turns out. I think Insomniac did a good job with the first one, and we've seen how much they grown in just a year (by comparing Ratchet to Resistance). Should make for an interesting sequel.

8 player co-op!

... Now if only I had friends who had PS3s. Hopefully there will be a decent number of /serious/* players online who are interested in the co-op mode.

*Non griefers.

Wow, that is an impressive feat, especially for consoles. However, personally I like matches with 8-12 players in FPS games. Too much more gets too frantic and totally annhilates the chances of teamwork.

As for 8 player co-op, that is sick. Too bad I don't even know 8 people who own a PS3, let alone want one.

Overall, this is good news for gamers all around, its only a matter of time until this type of game comes to the 360.

well Resistance is out... 40 players worked pretty well there. But whats going to make 60 players work well is the size of the maps. If they have the right size maps then having 60 players will work well. [look at the size of warhawk maps... you can't even walk them, youhave to use vehicles or else you'll never get to the action. ] So if they can get maps, huge massive maps, with dropships and battle fortresses, then the 60 players will workout well; also, it'll keep people from being able to camp spawn points.

Halo did what halo did, the only thing that it did well imo is the fact that it had co-op online play. Otherwise, what did it really bring to the table other than falling in the line of popularity set by its predecessors. 16 player max online.. big in comparison to Resistance with 40. 640p almost hi def.

Insomniac has so far executed extremely well on the PS3. Resistance was probably rushed, of course they were programming the game without the full PS3 specs and yet they still pull off a decent game. I love the fact that for Resistance 2 they're pulling out all the stops and have high ambitions for the game. Someone has to raise that bar and show what the PS3 can do.

I'm willing to bet that you'll NEVER see a game on 360 have 60 players online matches at full 720p. I don't think the system is capable of producing these type of feats. I don't even think that a game on 360 could even pull off having 32 players online max like in Warhawk. [that's why there's already rumors of
games being reworked for a new 360, and before that rumor it was rumors that games had already pushed the 360 as far as it could go]

It more so has to do with XBL uses P2P for everything while Resistance uses an actual dedicated server (which can allow for more players at once with no lag).

What made Resistance and MotorStorm lag free was running on a dedicated server.

Overall, I'm just glad Insomniac is trying to surpass some of the standards set by Halo 3 (like 4 player co-op with 8 player online co-op). Although, I wish Insomniac would have a good online stat tracking (like Bungie has with Halo) and have massive LAN play. If Insomniac does this along with SCEA/SCEE marketing the game near or at a Halo 3 advertising level, I think this could very well be the Halo on PS3. But that's just my thinking though (well, they are different games, but this could be the game that sells a few million if marketed right).

I'm pretty excited about this game considering I never owned a PS3 or played the original Resistance. IGN does have a few more details regarding the co-op. There are two campaign modes, one of which is a regular story based single-player campaign and the co-op which is objective-based. I wish it would have been 8-player co-op in story mode but oh well. I hope they will at least have 2-player online co-op for the story mode.

I thought 60 player battles wouldn't work well either but it isn't 60 guys simply fragging each other. There are different classes so on a 30 man team, 10 guys can rush in for an assault, while 10 hang back as medics, and 10 more are all the way in the back providing sniper cover.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/845/845049p1.html

 • The game will feature the standard single-player campaign as well as an eight-player online co-op campaign that's objective-based. Two people can still work together locally.
 • Ready to beat each other senseless online? Resistance 2 will feature 60-player matches set in the United States.
 • Sorry, Rachel; the campaign will pick up from Fall of Man's epilogue and stick solely with Nathan Hale as he copes with getting shot down in Iceland, escaping to the states and joining the "Sentinels" program.
 • There will be classes. Characters will start out from one of three basic templates -- a "tank-style" soldier rocking a chain gun, a "Special Ops class" that seems like a sniper or a medic whose "Medicator" gun will hurt enemies and heal allies -- and go from there.
 • When you and a team of friends head into battle, there will not be a selectable difficulty. Insomniac will be auto-scaling the challenge to the skill of you and your squad. When you jump into a random online match, you'll be teamed with partners and opponents who are around your personal level.
 • "Personal" is going to be a big word in Resistance 2. The game will have dedicated servers for gaming, community and stats as well as gamer profile pages on myresistance.net. In-game, the setup will be completely open when it comes to clans and parties -- the era of invites has come to a close.
 • Vehicles are in the game, but Insomniac wouldn't let on about their role.
 • The game's set in the '50s, but expect a more modern U.S. landscape as well as a focus on the aerial side of the Chimeran attack.
 • The game's AI has been overhauled -- they have improved routines and detachable armor pieces -- and boss battles will be more important than ever.

I'd like to see CAG vs. GAF at Resistance 2, 30 CAG members vs. 30 GAF members. That would be fun. :D

Can't wait to see how this works with Home (if it's out by then). It would be cool having everyone at my place, then jumping into a Resistance match with me.

So, this is amazing. I need to get my hands on the first one. Its too expensive for me right now when I'm not trying to spend too much (cuz, I bought 78 games in 2007). Once the first Resistance becomes GH (this year, please Sony?) I'll grab it.
Good, great, fine. Now drop the price on the first one already!
I think it will drop in price when it becomes a GH (I see Sony rolling them out sometime in May-July). SCEA usually waits to drop a price until it becomes GH (although a few games which retailed at $50 last gen, saw the price drop to $40 before GH status).

The reason for no price drop now is the game still sells decently (kind of like Halo on the original Xbox), so SCEA wants to get as much as they can back (so they can make up for PS3 hardware loses).
Good, great, fine. Now drop the price on the first one already!
QFMFT, I can't believe this game is still $60 (granted it dropped a few weeks ago for one week at BB). Same with Gears of War .... these should have hit $40 permanent at this point.
