September 18, 2008 - Patch 1.03 Released on Xbox Live in US

PATCH 1.03

System Changes
- Soul Crushes are harder to pull off (moves generally take off less from the soul gauge)
+ You can JI throws
+ laggy stage are much improved but not completely fixed

Ivy:

- SW WS B is FIXED.... it hits TOTALLY different, SW WS B -> BT A+B no longer forward RO and can't follow up with the old combo, so no more infinites..
- whip 6A+B does less damage
+ JF CS is easier to do (window is bigger)
- whip 3B worse recover
- CS range seems to be shorter... it's covers around 'one character width' away (hm... don't know how to translate that but you can go figure)

Algol:

-3B~41236B->3B - damage scaled down to 70 (before was 90)
-if 22B is hit in the air... it no longer provides a stun for 2A+B to bounce juggle
-8A+B in juggles will set them flying backwards... for BT B+K so 33B -> 8A+B -> BT B+K ... it does horrible damage compared to before... he mentioned something like 50? yeah
-66A+G throw pushes further back

Cassandra:
- 66B+K doesn't pick up the opponent like before...
- you can do five i236 in a row lol... (probably shitty damage)
- 66A+B on airborne can NOT connect the 4 jf
- 236 recovery on block is worse you're looking at BB for most characters

Sophitia:
-BB damage is weaker now
-3A+B hit airborne once

Yoshimitsu:
-a:B+K damage is weaker, and can not follow up with 3AB UNLESS you do 2a:B before that.... making it harder
-44bA no longer rapes soul gauge like before.. takes around four 44bA against the wall for CF... not like before two 44bA no walls.....
- after a:B+K vs airborne (in juggle), 66B can be teched to the left (but i'm sure he didn't test it against all characters.....and no we don't plan to test against all characters)

Amy:
-3BA no longer rapes soul gauge does less damage

Raphael:
- BB no longer tracks like no tomorrow...

Setsuka:
-A+G throw is 5 less damage

Voldo:
- BS 236A no longer stuns
- BS 22B won't relaunch the airborne opponent
- combo damage is weaker

Astaroth:
- 6K is -14

Xianghua:
+ 214B+G B hits Astaroth

Talim:
- A+K Tech Jump time is less

Cervantes:
-11K has less advantage on block
- regular hit 3B can not connect i214B+K only CH version can.

Tira:
-infinite against talim doesn't work (didn't even know there was an infinite lol)
+ 2A no longer whiffs

Siegfried:
-3 SCH B no longer combos

Kilik:
+ B+K will auto GI mid horizontal/vertical non-kick attacks. smaller GI window

The Apprentice:
+ A+B throw break has better recovery

Nightmare:
- FC A+G_B+G against head towards opponent does NOT guarantee any types of throws... meaning COMBOS like, NSS A+B -> iFC A+G -> throw or BT 2K -> iFC A+G -> back throw can both be ducked.

Things NOT fixed:
- Cass 1K still misses LM
- Kilik's MO A still goes through Maxi.
- Xianghua's command throw doesn't work on Lizardman (i need to check this one.)before.
- you can do five i in a row.
- on airborne can NOT connect the 4 just frames.

July 25, 2008 - Darth Vader vs Yoda Screenshots. Confirmed as DLC?

http://www.gamersreports.com/news/8653/vader-coming-to-360-soul-calibur-iv-as-download-screens/

Another quality GamersReports exclusive coming your way, folks. According to one of our illustrious anonymous email sources, these three screens are of Darth Vader versus Yoda in the Xbox360 version of Soul Calibur IV. The Vader is being planned as an add-on download, it seems. No word on when, or even if ever it will be released, but the proof is in the screens, unedited for your pleasure. (Thanks, Dogbat)

*Update: Just to clarify, the Vader is supposedly going to be a download add-on, that may or may not be charged for, and this comes directly from Namco, not hacked from the disc or fan-hacked or any such sort of trickery. It is likely going to work in reverse for the PS3 version with Yoda, as well. Just to clarify on some speculation we've seen, thanks.

July 20, 2008 - Who is the last spot?

It looks like the last spot is really next to vader/yoda instead of next to the bonus slot (star). And everyone knows how much namco loves DLC and how they said they were trying to please all the fans and how much of an outcry there was for both characters to be in both versions AND also on the soul calibur commercial thats playing alot it shows both vader and yoda fighting without saying anything about console specifics. Conclusion: the last spot is for yoda / vader. You heard it here first!

July 15, 2008 - IGN Progress Report

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/890/890283p1.html

July 15, 2008 - We've seen Soulcalibur IV quite a bit recently, especially considering the fact that the game is almost due to hit store shelves (we're still expecting a release on the 29th). With that said, we still had to swing by Namco Bandai's meeting space to check out what Soulcalibur was bringing to E3 and we're pleased to say that things are looking pretty fantastic. That's certainly good news because the build we saw at the show was complete and essentially representative of the final product (with a few minor tweaks still needed). Although we couldn't spend too much time pouring over the numerous game modes, we glanced at a few elements of the title that we haven't talked about much before.

Before we get into the specifics, let's lay out the basics. Soulcalibur IV, like its predecessors, is a one-on-one, 3D fighting game that pits heroes and villains against each other as they use an assortment of deadly weapons, like swords, axes, whips and staffs. Soulcalibur is a rather deep title with a host of different gameplay mechanics, including holds, counters, parries, armor deformation and Critical Finishes. Although we'll touch on the Critical Finishes in a moment, we'll summarize by saying that there's a lot to do in this fighter and it's a lot of fun.

The two versions of Soulcalibur are identical to each other, except for the included Star Wars bonus character. As you may or may not know, Darth Vader will be showing his helmeted head in the PS3 version and the green master Yoda will be leaping about in the 360 version. Otherwise, you'll be getting the same gameplay experience on either platform, though you will be able to perform an optional install on the PS3 version which takes up a little over two gigs.

We played the PS3 version and were pleased to see that there were no more framerate issues that had popped up in previous builds. In the past, the 360 seemed to have the upper hand, but the playing field looks even now, which is good.

Before jumping into a match, we decided to play around with the Character Creation system. We were really impressed at the number of different options players will have for creating their own warriors. To start, you choose your fighter's gender and then set a few basic attributes like moral alignment, focuses and basic character types. The system then auto-generates a character for you to work off of, so you can jump into the editor proper once you have your template.

You can then adjust the character's physique (including the amount of muscle definition), adjust their hair style, facial type, skin color and other various attributes. Once these basic elements are in place, you can completely customize their armor set, weapon type and even voice (and vocal pitch). There are other more detailed traits we couldn't fully explore, like the skill system, but the main foundation for your fighter can be any of the Soulcalibur characters (besides the Star Wars ones). Your creation will simply mirror the actions and behaviors of the selected fighter.

After spending some time in Character Creation, we had fun performing the Critical Finish moves of several different characters. These techniques are spectacular, brutal attacks that can be executed under special circumstances. You must first destroy one piece of your opponent's armor and then wear their Soul Gauge down completely. After you knock them back one last time, you just need to hit all four face buttons to pull off the move. From what we saw, each move "teleports" both fighters to a different arena and you proceed to perform some flashy moves in an over-the-top sequence. For example, Vader's Critical Finish sent a lightsaber dancing through the air, slashing the opponent in a flurry of red shadows. We think these moves add a dramatic (and showy) tone to the game..

July 4, 2008 - New IGN Blog

The Finer Points
Hi everyone. My name is Jaehyung An and I am the cut-scene director for Soulcalibur IV. This blog edition will focus on the story and cut-scenes within the game.

Before going into that, let me talk about why we created real-time cutscenes. In the past, realistic textures and lighting were only do-able through pre-rendered cutscenes. With the current generation of systems, we can now depict in-game textures in full detail. It also means that footage is free of any degradation. Our thought of wanting to provide the degradation-free footage to the HDTV audiences, led us decide to create the real-time cutscenes.

One of the most essential elements are the facial expressions of characters. By blending facial capturing and hand-animation, we succeeded to achieve a unique blend of realistic facial acting while keeping its original expressive characteristics. Other wonderfully beautiful and rich scenes include prominent effects personified by the real-time shading, and so on.

Of course, not only do the visuals carry the torch for cinematic excellence in the series but the audio as well. I hope you play with as many characters as possible in the story mode and enjoy each ending cut-scene.

Speaking of story, I’m Yoshihiro Nakagawa and I’m in charge of the story and character development for Soulcalibur IV.

Soulcalibur IV’s story is a culmination of the franchise’s 10 year history, centering on the two powerful swords, Soul Calibur and Soul Edge. This time around, a character that has ties to both swords will be revealed.

For the story settings of the new Soulcalibur IV characters, we established their characteristics based on their weapon and performance in the game. Character stories were also shaped by how the artists created the in-game models. Then once each character’s background story had been determined, we found ways to tie them into the “Battle between Soul Edge and Soul Calibur.”

We tried really hard to add some story-elements into the cut-scenes. In order to do so, we adjusted the development schedule so that we could prepare and create the character’s stories early on in the process and incorporate them into at the beginning of the cut-scene production. This resulted in having a very smooth development process between the finalized story and the creation of the cutscene content. Because of this optimal environment, our cut-scenes have turned out to be very high-quality, alive and emotional.

Soul Calibur IV gameplay details, character creation observations

Here's the latest gameplay information from Bandai-Namco on their latest game Soul Calibur IV, which is set to release for PS3 and Xbox360 on 7/31/08.

This time we'll be introducing every game mode and the new system details. We also have some easy-to-understand explanatory comics for those new to the game. They can be found here. (LOL)

Game Modes

Single Player Mode
Story
The mode where your character experiences the story of Soul Calibur IV. As the character walks around in the adventure world, you can choose the destination. You can also get caught up in other characters' stories or wait for them to conclude.
With active battle, on the way you will encounter various enemies and allies coming and going, and can enjoy nonstop battles with them.

Tower of Lost Souls
This is a game where you aim to conquer a tower with enemies lying in wait to defeat on every floor. There are two types of challenge, with either survival or mission elements. Rather than capture techniques, the key is in character creation. (not sure about that last part)
There are two choices: "Climb the Tower" or "Descent into the Underground," and on every floor the player can select a number of characters. If there's a treasure box on a floor, you can find character creation parts or gold inside. As you change floors your life gauge will not recover, so be careful.
In addition to the common characters you're used to seeing, you will also meet special characters which are exclusive to Tower of Souls. (...Hwa**?)

Arcade
This is the traditional 8-stage COM battle.
Hitting the enemy with special moves gets a score, and depending on your method of attack the score changes.
Your life gauge and time remaining factor into a bonus score, and at the end your total score is entered into an online ranking.

Training
Here's the practice mode where you can adjust certain small conditions.
From newbie beginners to advanced players, there's a broad range of support. With opponent actions/settings, commands, command recording, replay, gauges and weapon parts and so forth, you can embark on a diverse training regimen.

Vs. Mode
The mode where you can freely select character and stage and have 1-on-1 battles with the COM or a friend.

Standard
This is the traditional standard mode where weapon and parts have no effect.

Special
Here, weapon and parts can have various effects.

Network Mode
PS3 uses PSN; Xbox 360 uses Xbox Live.
The mode where you can wage battle with players all over the world. You can also check out player rankings here.

Vs. Standard
Same as offline standard Vs.

Vs. Special
Same as offline special vs.

Character Creation
Mode where, combining various weapons and parts, you can create your own original character. With all these new elements, you really can make it your own original character!

Adjust muscle tone and size to your preference

Character voice step (pitch?) can be changed

Select skill setting and special abilities

Depending on how you designate starting equipment (equipment, battle gear, articles) you can make a character with the style (?) you prefer

Customization of regular characters evolves greatly! There's a variety of parts to be made into equipment!

A countless number of characters can be stored!

As you save gold in the game you can purchase more weapons and defensive items for your customizing enjoyment

June 24, 2008 - EGM Rumor: Kratos to be guest in PS3 Version

SigFrido:
According to the rumor mill in the August Issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Kratos, God of Soul, is to appear as a PS3 exclusive character in Soul Calibur IV.

The magazine states that Kratos will be the next PS3 character revealed, so if the rumor is in fact true, we should be seeing something soon. Also, this will be the first look at Kratos on next gen hardware, and possibly a first glimpse at what to expect from God of War III. Obviously if Kratos appears in SCIV, Namco has cut some deal with Sony, and could be sharing actual assets or character concepts from the upcoming PS3 exclusive

June 6, 2008 - Rumor: Create your own Jedi/sith + 2 more Star Wars Characters?

http://www.psu.com/Rumor--SCIV-to-feature-SithJedi-character-creation-classes-News--a0003906-p0.php

According to a PSU source, Namco Bandai's Soul Calibur IV will feature not only Star Wars characters such as Darth Vader, Yoda, and Vader's secret apprentice, but will also include both Sith Lord and Jedi Knight character creation classes.

Although details are already scarce on the character creation options in Soul Calibur IV, we do know that choosing certain clothes or armor will affect how players behave in battle. Also, some pieces of equipment favor offensive and others defensive playstyles. It will be interesting if this rumor is true, as players will be able to not only create medieval looking characters but also their own lightsaber-wielding Sith warriors.

To take things one step further, we have also been told that Soul Calibur IV will feature up to five known characters from the Star Wars universe, including the 3 previously announced characters. Who will these other two characters be? Your guess is as good as ours, however, seeing as though the secret apprentice fights for the dark side, we expect one of the unannounced characters to be a Jedi.

However, today Namco Bandai channeled Yoda with the announcement that "there is another." Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will feature the Secret Apprentice character from LucasArts' upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, allowing for proper lightsaber-on-lightsaber duels in a fighting game for the first time since 1997's original PlayStation game Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi.

May 27, 2008 - IGN Vader Hands On

Article
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/876/876773p1.html

For the most part his strikes are quick and possess a fair reach, but his actual movements aren't as agile as those of Yoda -- obviously. While his green-skinned counterpart flips about and spirals through the air, Vader seems to rely more on sharp, precise strikes that boast a respectable amount of power, but he stays grounded.

Although we didn't have time to pour over each and every move in his repertoire, he doesn't appear to have as many flashy techniques as the other Soulcalibur characters. But he does have a few eye-catching attacks to his name. One charged attack found Vader pulling his fist back to gather energy and then unleashing it quickly on an opponent. Vader also has his iconic "Emperor Throw" where he hefts his enemy over his head and tosses them to the ground. Furthermore, if you grab your opponent at an angle, Vader will stab them right through the mid-section with his lightsaber.

The most powerful Force move we could pull off was a pretty snazzy lightsaber throw, where Vader tossed his weapon just in front of himself and it spins horizontally like a circular saw. If you can catch your opponent in this attack, the results can be devastating.

Having seen the game running on both the 360 and PS3, we're a little worried that the PS3 version suffers from significant slowdown as opposed to the extremely smooth 360 build, but it's still early. These problems could very well be addressed in the coming months.

May 26, 2008 - IGN Yoda Hands On

Article
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/876/876529p1.html

As for the Force, well, Yoda does have some minor power applications here. He can perform Force pushes, which can aid in ring outs or (more often) to give some spacing. This is balanced by a special energy meter that drains when Yoda uses the Force.

And then there is the height. Yoda is short -- there's no way around it. And that means that if he is standing on the ground, he won't be hit by high attacks. Don't worry though -- Yoda doesn't stay on the ground for long. There are plenty of opportunities to land high attacks when Yoda is airborne. Though he's quick, those who play defensively and with patience will find their opportunities to strike.

It isn't all biscuits and gravy with Yoda. He does have some weaknesses to help balance him out. That short stature may cancel out high attacks from enemies, but it also makes Yoda's reach the worst in Soulcal IV. He has no choice but to get up close and personal. Against someone like Kilik, who can extend his range with the bo staff, Yoda can be in for some trouble.

Though he is an exclusive character, Yoda is not an unlockable. He's ready to go from the moment you pop the disc into your 360. And he is subject to all of the same gameplay rules as the other characters. That means the new armor destruction feature is in effect. We were too busy beating the snot out of the AI to see what it might look like when Yoda has armor destroyed, but we're sure it won't happen too often anyway.

Along with Yoda, there is a bonus stage added to the mix. Yoda gets to do battle in an Imperial shuttle bay. Set on a raised walkway, the arena is long, but narrow. To make it just a touch more interesting, there are energy fields that move up and down the path during battle, expanding and retracting the fighting area throughout the contest. To top it off, you get some classic Star Wars theme music playing in the background of this stage.

April 29, 2008 - PSU Hands On Impressions

http://www.psu.com/Soul-Calibur-IV-Hands-On-Preview--a0003485-p0.php

Some choice quotes

Soul Calibur IV’s character customization screen, the Create-a-Soul mode, allows you to change costumes and pick new armor and weapons, some of which will be unlocked as you progress through the game. These changes won’t just be physical, they’ll change the way each fighter behaves in the ring. Players can choose from offensive and defensive fighting styles.

There’s a whole new dimension to fighting in this game on several levels. In addition to new combos for all the pugilists, there’s now a Soul Gauge, a large gem that appears at the end of the screen’s life bar. Over the course of a battle, this gauge measures how defensive a player you are. In order to encourage offense, the gauge turns red if you’re too defensive, fending off attacks rather than using combos and tactics to take the fight to your opponent.

In perhaps its boldest statement in favor of offense-first fighting strategy, Soul Calibur IV has introduced the match-ending critical finishers. Once at least part of an opponent’s armor has been destroyed, you can knock him or her to the ground and push all four face buttons simultaneously to pull off a super finishing move. Unique to each fighter, these cinematics showcase a brutal attack that finishes off your opponent regardless of how much life bar remained with just one blow. Cassandra’s cinematic has her putting her butt over her downed opponent’s face as hearts explode around the screen. This can change the fate of a match at any time, but they must be perfectly timed and they’re not easy to pull off.

Although neither Darth Vader nor Yoda was shown in this build, Wayne Shiu, product marketing manager at Namco Bandai told me that both of these Jedis have been balanced inside the game world. Each fighter will also have his own critical finisher that revolves around the Star Wars mythology.

In addition to the weapons-based fighting, Namco Bandai promises a new story set-up based around the swords of power with each character having a unique reason to acquire the all-powerful swords.

And for those worried about the critical finishing moves, they’re only available when an opponent spends the entire match blocking rather than attacking. It serves as a nice balance for those who like to fight fairly.

April 18, 2008 - New Interview with Katsutoshi Sasaki by 1up

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3167434&p=4

1UP: In Japan, you recently revealed two guest characters, Scheherazade and Angol Fear, each designed by a famous manga artist. But those characters haven't been promoted in the U.S. and aren't in the playable demo here today...will they still be in the U.S. game?

Katsutoshi Sasaki: Yes, they will definitely both be in the U.S. version as well.

1UP: Will we see even more guest characters from other manga artists in the game?

KS: Yes, there are a few more characters from manga artists and other famous illustrators, too.

1UP: Will these guest characters have their own stages? The Star Wars guys have some pretty nifty arenas...

KS: No, there won't be a stage for each character. In the past we've always made a "home" stage for each fighter, but this time around we're not taking that approach.

1UP: So far, you've only revealed one all-new character who's actually part of the Soul Calibur world, Hilde. We have to wonder, are there any more real Calibur characters in this game?

KS: Yes, we do definitely have more...we still have many things to reveal, actually.

1UP: We also haven't seen anything about a new single-player mode like SC3's Chronicles of the Sword or SC2's Weapon Master Mode...will SC4 have something comparable?

KS: For SC4's single-player game, we're introducing a new mode called Active Matching Battle. This is a team battle mode where you have a pool of characters to choose from who must face a steady stream of opponents in one arena.

1UP: SC4 will also be the first game in the series to offer online play...how's that going? Is everything running OK so far?

KS: We're currently going through lots of trial and error getting the online up and running, and we're testing connectivity between Japan and the U.S. to make sure that everyone can play together with minimal stress or frustration. Another big component of this online experience that I need to mention is the Create-A-Soul mode. This time around, you can create a custom character and introduce it into the online versus mode. What's different is that this time you're not only changing your fighter's appearance, but also their attributes. For example, a certain piece of armor might raise your defense or give you special properties, and a new weapon may give you a stronger attack. It really adds a lot of depth to the online combat.

1UP: How will you acquire these special weapons? Will you unlock them in the game or will you have to purchase them as downloadable content?

KS: We have several different methods for acquiring these weapons and armor: Some will be unlocked by playing through the game, while others will only be available as downloads.

1UP: You announced that the special $80 Premium Edition will offer exclusive downloadable content -- might that stuff be armor and weapons?

KS: Yes, that is definitely a consideration.

1UP: Will the 360 and PS3 premium packs offer different downloadable content?

KS: For Soul Calibur IV, we're trying to make it so that there are no fundamental differences between the two versions. We do have Darth Vader in the PS3 game and Yoda on 360, but that's the only division between the two; the rest of the contents will be identical.

1UP: Are you worried about fan reaction to the addition of Critical Finish moves? People might equate them to Mortal Kombat's Fatalities...

KS: Critical Finishes are fatal attacks that defeat your opponent in one strike, but I'm not worried that fans won't like them because you can't really abuse them. In order to do a Critical Finish, specific criteria must be met -- only players who block frequently will allow their armor to be destroyed, opening them up to a finishing attack. In past games, when players would turtle it slowed the pace of the match down and made it less fun. Now, they're at a major disadvantage because their opponent will be able to punish them for blocking. We're hoping that it inspires players to play more aggressively, using Guard Impacts and Eight-way running to avoid succumbing to these Critical Finishes. Pulling one of these moves off really fills you with a sense of satisfaction...and even if you're a novice player who gets murdered by one, you'll hopefully be so inspired by how impressive the move looks that you'll be motivated to improve your skills.

1UP: Your team definitely appears to be having fun with these Critical Finish moves...we saw Cassandra's and it involves her planting her butt on your face amid an explosion of giant pink hearts. Will these moves go way beyond what we're used to seeing in Soul Calibur?

KS: They all look really cool, and we are designing these moves in a way that reflects each character's true personality and characteristics. And yes, Cassandra's is very cute and innocent...it's probably my favorite one in the game, actually!

1UP: Nearly every veteran character from past games returns here, yet we still haven't seen Setsuka or Rock. Will their fans be disappointed when they play the final game?

KS: Well, we always strive to satisfy all of our fans...and we wouldn't want to disappoint them.

1UP: Both Tekken 6 and Street Fighter IV feature hugely obese fighters...this obviously must be a hot new trend in fighting games, so will you be adding a forklift fatty to Soul Calibur to keep up with your competitors?

KS: We'd definitely consider adding a character like that if people really want it, but it seems that he'd be at a big disadvantage, getting hit from every angle because he's so big.

April 15, 2008 - Gamespot Hands-on Gives New Pics and Info

http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/...6189309&part=rss&tag=gs_previews&subj=6189309

...The combat system in this version of the game finally included some of the new content we'd heard about previously. The demo featured some new elements in the life-bar displays, which play into combat. The large gem at the end of each bar is the soul gauge and cycles through different color states based on your combat style. If you tend to block a lot, your gauge will eventually cycle to red and allow your opponent to perform a powerful guard-break attack. If your foe gets the timing right, he or she can follow up with another strong attack and actually break your armor. This new system is tracked by a small trio of green boxes under the life bars onscreen, which represent the condition of your armor: high, mid, and low.

From the look of it, once your armor is broken, that's how it stays for the rest of your match. Fortunately, your armor is back when you take on a new fighter. When your armor is broken, your fighter will reflect the loss in his or her appearance, and you'll obviously take a bit more damage. The more controversial new addition to the mix is the critical finishers, which are tied to armor loss. At the moment, once you've broken at least one section of your opponent's armor, you can knock him or her around again to get his or her soul gauge back to red. Then, you'll have a small window of time to trigger the critical finisher by pressing all four face buttons on the controller at the same time. If you've timed it right, you'll be treated to a short cinematic sequence that's unique to each fighter, wherein fighters will lay the smack down on their opponents and end the match, regardless of the recipient's health. We have mixed feelings about this addition, although we have to say it will ensure people stay on their toes during a match.

Cervantes

cer1ib6.jpg

This classic Calibur villain has been wreaking nautical havoc ever since the series began in 1996 with Soul Edge, and he shows no signs of tempering his evil in this fifth installment. For the uninitiated, know that he's an undead pirate driven mad by the accursed Soul Edge blade. He also happens to be Ivy's old man, and a notoriously strong character. Even though he no longer has the Soul Edge, he's still a force to be reckoned with thanks to plenty of powerful charge moves, deadly grabs, and cheap shots from his Nirvana pistol. His basic look in Soul Calibur IV hasn't changed that much -- his sickly lavender skin, withered musculature and milky, cataract-covered eyes remain intact -- but his new costume pulls off a serious fashion faux pas with its morass of unsightly spikes. Less is more!

Amy

amy1cf3.jpg

Nope, this dainty lil' Gothic Lolita from France isn't actually a new character -- she appeared as a pre-made custom character in Soul Calibur III and as a full-fledged competitor in its Japan-only arcade cousin. Her storyline closely ties into Raphael's: After being orphaned at a young age, she's raised by Raphael as his own daughter, only to later become infected by his vampirism. Now, no longer human, she follows his lead without question. Her appearance has changed very little since the last game, with the same sultry mix of black leather, black lace, black roses...and some all-new fur trim that's sure to inspire a PETA boycott.

Zasalamel

zas1vn6.jpg

This magical Moor first showed up in Soul Calibur III as that game's primary adversary: He sought to re-forge the legendary blades in order to tap their true potential, reviving Nightmare in the process. Zasalamel's true nature remains cloaked in mystery, but he's seemingly immortal (or at least endlessly reincarnated) and likely views these swords as a potential release from his eternal cycle of life. His Soul Calibur IV costume gives him more ornate robes and some newly poofy pantaloons, but it appears that he's still wielding that obnoxiously powerful Kafziel scythe. Its excellent range and high damage made him a truly dangerous foe last time...

Are you talking about Taki or Talim? They'll both be back is my bet. They're character stalwarts of the series.

Anyway, I hope that we get to see Revenant be actually playable in single player mode. I really liked that character and was saddened to learn that he was strictly multiplayer in SC3 (could you play him in SP? I never figured out whether you could or couldn't, so I just assumed you couldn't).

Also, I don't know how likely this is but having Necrid back would be cool.

Probably talking about Talim. Alot of people seem to be waiting for her to be announced. She was one of my favorites to play as too.
Kilik, Xianghua, & Lizardman Return. Xianghua looks hot and kilik looks badass. But lizardman looks the best.
Awesome, I'm fucking glad Kilik is back.

Are you joking did you play sc3

Could we just get a complete Star Wars fighting game build using the Soul Calibur engine. Then my dream of fighting Tsavong Lah with Darth Vader could live.
Time to leave the realm of complete and total nerdom. I like the 360 box better. The black looks like it is distorting the faces in the PS3 one. Any news on when we are getting a release date? I really can't wait for this one, I am really expecting this to be more SCII than III.
I must be confused did someone actually like sc3???
I did. Was it the worst in the series? Hell yeah (not counting Soul Blade). But I still liked it.

I liked SCIII, but not as much as the other games in the series... also, I hate the boxart. It looks great, but how damn confusing is it to see a box that says "Soul Calibur" and then you see vader ont here...???

I guffaw at those who thought vader and yoda would not appear on the boxart the second screenshots of them popped up.

They look like they didn't fully meld everything together. Looks copy and paste right now, as opposed to SCII where all the faces looked like they were from the same game.

Cover art would be infinitely better without the Star Wars characters, but given the two covers, the PS3 version is clearly a lot better looking.

WTF is this boxart garbage? Way to sell out. And who cares about Lizardman in the game? Who made that decision?

Ivy looks hot on the PS3 cover though. Mmm, lips.

I didn't explore SC3 too much but did they ever really separate Seung Mina's moveset from Kilik's? I always hated it in games when the "bonus" characters are just slightly altered movesets from another. That always bothers me.

I love me some Cassie though. 236B for life~
