What's the best 7 port, external powered USB hub for the ps3? External power meaning that it comes with a power cable

I'd recommend the D-Link as I own a couple of these and they work great. You can probably find a cheaper price (under $25). I'm not sure if it works on the PS3 but I'd be shocked if it didn't since it's just the basic USB specs.

Maybe a stupid question, but what's the purpose of having the usb hub?

If your PS3 only has 2 ports, a USB hub effectively gives you more.
Also, a powered USB hub lets you charge your controllers without putting extra draw through the /CONSOLE/ itself.
Plus it's a nice way to organize your stuff. I have a USB flash drive, a keyboard, and my two controllers plugged into a hub, and just one cord plugged into my PS3.

The 40's only have two usb ports.
Not using a powered hub means that USB devices will draw power from the PS3, putting extra stress on it's PSU, if the power load was designed for two.
