I'm awaiting the delivery of Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO in the mail. I'm aware of what I'm in for with regard to the controller, but I'm willing to make it work. That's what is inspiring this thread.

What are your favourite fighting games on the GameCube? I don't like SSBM. Don't care if that makes me a heretic. I'll start. Since I don't have CvS2 yet, I'll go with what I know.

Ultimate Muscle: Legends vs. New Generation
This game rocks my socks. I was a big fan of AKI's nWo for the N64 back before I went to college and this Muscle game is very similar. Nothing satisfies like this does when I want to get smashy. Plus, I totally remember the original pink figurines of some of the characters in the game.

This. End of debate. Ultimate Muscle was/is awesome on the GCN. Soul Calibur is a damn good game as well but I have yet to find anything on the Cube that topped Ultimate Muscle.

*I would also like to point out to the people that dismiss the GCN game and played the PS2 game that they were not the same game.

Soul Calibur and Bloody Roar are the only things that come to mind as traditional fighters. Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble is okay. If you want to import some games and try all those anime fighters, lot of them are fun. A couple of them play like Power Stone.

Smash and Soul Calibur II are my favs. Since you don't like smash (hey it's ok) SCII.

The Naruto games are good(3 or higher though) but I like SC better.

Yup. I missed the boat when it first released, so I had to settle for a $7 used copy from Blockbuster, but it's so awesome, I can't even explain.

And SCII, of course -- as someone who owned all three versions at one point, the Cube one was inarguably the best.

Finally got Capcom vs SNK 2. All the reviews bellyaching about the GC-ism are completely unfounded. You just have to select AC-ism and then do a little bit of button remapping (which, I should add, is all saved to your memory card anyway). Great game! Now to find a mint copy because I was shafted on my eBay purchase. Boo-urns.

Since nobody's mentioned it, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee. It may not be the best game ever, but there's something appealing about being a giant lizard and ripping up buildings to hurl into your opponent's face. :)

Ugh, my friends and I rented this when we were in college - horrible. It was fun to destroy shit for about 10 minutes, and after that it sucked.

Gotcha Force - It's cutsy but still awesome. It's not a 2d sidescrolling fighter though. You fight agianst 1-3 enemies at a time, alone or with an ally. You have a team you make up of different fighters, everything from ninjas, gunfighters, witches, tanks, planes to spaceships and dragons. Really fun game. It's made by Capcom.

oh wow that reminds me of a fightting game I love on the cube.. Custom Robo. One day I should get back to unlocking the weapons in that game. The single lpayer is insanely linear. Makes Phoenix Wright look like Zelda but I love the fighting.

Where do you pick up this game at a good price these days? I don't know how I missed it but, as someone who has a toy chest full of m.u.s.c.l.e.s. at my parent's place, I need to pick it up for the wii.

I was looking at the nes game on ebay recently and just couldn't spend the cash on a game I probably wouldn't like solely for the m.u.s.c.l.e.s reference.

Thanks in advance.

edit: I don't remember many worthy fighters on the gamecube... now if it was a dreamcast thread, that would be another story.

edit 2: Found at gamestop for 9.99. Will check in store before rolling the dice on a used gamestop order.

Hey rothgar24! If EB Games does store to store shipping, and you don't mind owning games that look ragged and pooped on, there are two pretty beat up copies in my city for $4.99 each. That's a fantastic price for this title.

Thanks. I'll check it out.

Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee is great if you have folks to play with -- the more the merrier. Just don't expect a lot. I played it on the Cube, and the later iteration on the PS2 (Saves the Earth) and they are pretty much a toss up. I prefer the tighter controls of the Cube version, but the monster lineup (Jet Jaguar) on the PS2 is awesome.

Naruto 2 -- fun, if a little routine -- all characters have the same combos, for the most part. It can be a little dull as a button masher (it certainly supports button mashing), but much more fun if you can get the different timing of all the characters down. Maybe not so much fun if u don't watch the show. Recently clearanced at Target, so u might still find some copies there for cheap. Naruto 3 and up are import only.

Soul Calibur 2 -- nuff said

Back in '88, I received my first NES for Christmas. I destroyed my left thumb and loved every moment. The GCN version of CvS2 takes me to that same place. It hurts so good.

;) I'm only half joking; it really does punish your left thumb.

Wonderswan never hit the US thru standard retail channels.

Gameboy's Tekken Advanced is not "real" Tekken -- not enough buttons.

Tekken does't suck, it just uses a control system you don't like, and that many other people happen to enjoy enough to make it a best seller at least a few times.
For what it's worth, I thought Soul Calibur was awful. I beat the game the same day I bought it.
It's not like some long involved RPG. I don't understand... Were Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat awful, too?

i can understand if you didn't like the soul calibur single player mission mode but I've never heard anyone hate on SC. what fighting games do you like?

You should NEVER be able to master a fighting game that easily. I *still* suck at Street Fighter despite having played it for more than a decade. I *still* can get my ass handed to me on the hardest difficulties of Mortal Kombat despite knowing all the little nuances.

The original Soul Calibur was EXCELLENT. That was a really legendary fighting game. The second one felt like a complete waste of time and was like a Killer Instinct clone for the blind.

I guarantee you that you haven't mastered Soul Calibur II in a day. And Mortal Kombat is one of the last games you should be referencing as a skill-based fighter.

I hear comments like "I beat that in a day all the time" -- at my age (42), you realize that they either played the game on Easy, with an Action Replay, or that they just aren't telling the truth.

The story mode in any Soul Calibur game takes dozens of hours to work thru.

I have never been able to play any of these games. I always end ip doing better if I just button mash, which quickly gets boring. I'm not saying that's all there is to these games, I'm saying that I've never been able to get the hang if playing them with any strategy - i.e. I suck.

if that's a reference to davo1224 then to be fair you don't need the story (weaponmaster) mode to master the game. It's how I developed my skill but you could just learn it arcade style.

I liked Soul Caliber II. I'm not saying I'm so skilled I can tell the differences between SC and SCII based on minute changes in the timing of movesets but among my dorm SCII was my fighting game.
