Purchased the CD the other day (I like to support musicians that I truely enjoy), threw it on my ipod, and now it's just sitting on my desk. Figured it's not really worth selling on ebay or whatnot, so thought I'd have a little fun and do a raffle. You don't pay shipping or anything, 100% free :p

If you don't know who they are, they are the ones behind the catchy "Crazy" song from a few years ago. This is their second album, and I'm pretty impressed with it. Really a unique album, which is pretty refreshing in a rather generic business. I swear, anything Danger Mouse touches is turned into gold.

Anyways, to enter, answer one or more of the following questions for your entry:

1. If you are a fan of Gnarls Barkley, what is your favorite song by them and why?

2. Who do you feel is making good music these days?

3. Nobody making good music these days? Why isn't it any good?

I'll leave the raffle up until April 21st, then I'll send the winner a pm to get shipping address. If they don't respond for a day or two, runner up will get it.

Good Luck!

EDIT:

We Have A Winner!

I took 3 of the 35 entries out of a little cup

The following were choosen:

SpitFire158
dastly75
zerowing

After looking back at the posts,
i chose who had the better post of the bunch
I've determined zerowing's posts were the best out of the three
He is the winner :applause:

Thanks for all the people who participated
I might do another one of these in the future :p

(tried to take a picture of the little pieces of paper, but they were too blurry to see :( )

PM will be sent to zerowing for shipping info

2. Nowadays, my favorite bands are Band of Horses, Animal Collective, and The New Pornographers. I feel that they represent some of the most innovative, harmonious, and well-polished music around today.

2. Three Days Grace, and The killers are 2 of my fave bands that are making great music these days. Metallica would be one but they have stopped being amazing

1. I am fan of Gnarls Barkley but more so a Danger Mouse fan. I have all of his albums like Gnarls Barkley, Gorrilaz, Danger Doom, Grey Album, etc, except due to money being tight I have yet to buy the latest Gnarls Barkley album. To answer the question, my favorite song is Gone Daddy, Gone because I am also a big Violent Femmes fan.

1. "Run." The music video for this song is just plain awesome. I love the retro beats in this song, especially the great 4 beat cue!

1. The Boogie Monster, Crazy, and Gone Daddy Gone are my 3 faves off ST. Elsewhere. Crazy, obviously, because it has a really catchy beat. Gone Daddy GOne, because its a cover of the Violent Femmes. Boogie MOnster because its just a really fun, cool song.

2. Who do you feel is making good music these days?
Emilie autumn cause of the way she mixes the classical and electronica musical genres.

I feel that it is ultimatly the producer that ends up making good music these days, as artisits are a dime a dozen, and what sets a mediocre and a platinum album apart is the producer. Those such as DJ Danger Mouse, Mark Ronson, and Nigel Godrich show that even if the artisit has talent, it can be brought to a new level.

Although this doesn't answer or fit your criteria correctly I think it is a lie to say that there is no good music. To say that there is no good music being made is just a lie, no matter what genre.
If anything the internet has made it easier for talented artists and bands to rise to the top, thus for the first time in history it is viable to self-release albums, truly making the music industry a true consumer based market.

3. Nobody making good music these days? Why isn't it any good?

Mainstream. Ill explain, alot of bands seem to sacrifice their style, to become mainstream and earn the big bucks. One of my favorite bands Atreyu radically changed their sound, not because of experimentation but because they could become Radio friendly,.Get more listeners and sell more cds. Thats disapointing

2. I feel that r & b is overall the best genre right now. smooth music that makes you feel good and can describe whatever is going on in your life. artists like mary j. blige and mariah carey are providing the soundtracks for peoples lives.

3. I don't believe this statement to be completely true. It is just that genres go through a down time. currently to me hip hop and dancehall reggae are going through major slumps right now.
Hip hop is taking a downturn in my opinion because of line dancing songs like superman and down south artists not having real lyrics.
Dancehall reggae is going down because it has become mainstream and artists have crossed over in more of a financial way rather than for the benefit of the music.

1) Just a Thought is my favorite Gnarls song. It describes how I felt once upon a time. I also very much enjoy Smiley Face and Necromancer.

3) Good music is not a thing of the past....It's just that you just have to look for it (pretty much like all good things...) You simply cannot rely on radio and music tv alone to hear good music.

1. "The Last Time". I heard it on a radio station and for some reason I found it insanely catchy to the point where my head refuses to let it go. But truly, I can't blame my head for having a good taste in music.

3. Because, aside from Barkley and a few others, it seems to me as though all of these more recent bands are only making it a goal to be 'like so and so' as though being original was some sort of passing fad; and that really disappoints me.

still counts :)

just looking to get discussion going about what music is like these days for you guys
thanks for your input :p

Didn't realize they played that one on the radio
i'd have to say that is probably one of my favorites off St. Elsewhere

it's funny because the last song on this album ( "A Little Better" ) is sorta similar in my opinion, and also is probably my favorite off The Odd Couple as well
(last song on St. Elsewhere was "The Last Time")

edit: sorry for double post by the way xP

2) I really like Outkast (Cee-Lo Green is still in the Dungeon Family), Wu-Tang, Ghostface, Nas, DOOM (All Capitals), Danger DOOM and Radiohead. They all try new things. They evolve. An early song by them will sound different in style and technique.

over the last year or so, i've been OBSESSED with MF DOOM and all of his various projects (dangerdoom, madlib, viktor vaughn, etc)

i'd have to say dangerdoom is one of the greatest albums i've listened to in awhile, as it puts together some of the greatest hip hop musicians (bunch of greats on the whole album, including DOOM, ghostface killah, talib, cee-lo, etc with danger mouse as producer.) PLUS Adult Swim (one of the last things on TV that allows creativity to flow) into one excellent package.

but yeah, anybody who says hip hop is dying/dead,
totally give MF DOOM a listen
Madlib/Quasimoto/Beat Konducta/etc (same thing) is also worth checking out :)

I have been listening to Radiohead a LOT lately. Their newer stuff is so much different than their older stuff, it feels like they put a lot of effort into their albums. I didn't like Radiohead's new direction on the album In Rainbows, but it's starting to grow on me. I can't get Bodysnatchers out of my head!

If you think DangerDoom is one of the greatest albums you've ever heard... you must really flip for the Madvillain, Viktor Vaughn, and MM... Food albums.

being a CEELO fan, my favorite song is "call of da wild" off of Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. cell therapy is tight too.

rap wise, anybody that isn't signed to a major deal is making good music. the current music state is like this way because people want to dance. Music always goes in cycles. It's true for ANY cycle. This happened in the early 90's....

but, there's good music all around us. sometimes you have to turn off the internet and bootleg up a mixtape or the equlivant.

ha!
yeah man, i got the madvillain cd a few months ago
it was played constantly on my ipod until this gnarls barkley cd came out

as for mm... food, it was a good album, but i prefer it when other people do DOOMs beats heh
i must say pot holderz and vomitspit are a few of my personal faves though which are off that cd :p

edit: btw, didn't mean to say dangerdoom was greatest album i've heard, but one of the better ones i've listened to in awhile :p

I'm not interested in the cd, as I've already bought it (It's excellent), but I just wanted to pop in and say that it's pretty cool that you're doing this raffle. As for good music today: I've been listening to a lot of Kate Nash, The Hold Steady, Winds, My Morning Jacket, and Opeth. I think it's a little ridiculous to say that no one makes good music anymore; I think you just have to look harder to find it. You're not likely to find it by flipping on the radio.

Anyways, to enter, answer one or more of the following questions for your entry:

1. If you are a fan of Gnarls Barkley, what is your favorite song by them and why?

The song Crazy since it was the first song I heard from them.

2. Who do you feel is making good music these days?\

John mayer

1. If you are a fan of Gnarls Barkley, what is your favorite song by them and why?

Transformer, its quirky and shares the name with a certain franchise I adore.

2. Who do you feel is making good music these days?

Daniel Dumile aka MF DOOM aka King Geedorah aka Viktor Vaughn, etc. All of his stuff after KMD is amazing, the lyrics, the style, everything about him breaths quality rap in this world filled with Soulja Boys and Dem Franchize Boyz. I happen to own every album from Mr. Dumile (legally) I am such a fan of his stuff. Even associated acts from Stones Throw have the quality Daniel Dumile has.

2. Who do you feel is making good music these days?

I'm also going to have to go with my "favorite rapper with no chain" MF DOOM. Hell, even my wife likes all of his songs. Sadly, he hasn't put anything out since the Dangerdoom album.

doomcoachellavs2.jpg

I really only know of the song "Crazy". I think the Foo Fighters, the White Stripes, and Radiohead are making some of the best music .

1. If you are a fan of Gnarls Barkley, what is your favorite song by them and why?
That's a tough one. I think if forced to choose, I'd actually go with "Go Go Gadget Gospel" because I think it's the perfect high energy opening track. Just hearing the opening riffs of the beat can turn my mood around. It's a great get out there and take on the world track, that perfectly blends Cee-Lo's powerful vocals with Danger Mouse's jarringly soulful production.

2. Who do you feel is making good music these days?
I think the better parts of the music scene have moved off the radio and onto the touring circuit. Margot and the Nuclear So & So's, Cold War Kids and other groups gained traction through persistent touring, which has led them be more in tune with their instruments and appreciate the value of experimentation and utilizing the entire band. These groups aren't the brainchild of some mega producer or some manufactured single machine that relies on pro tools to get through. If you want to get genre specific, then yes, fields like rap and r'n'b have definitely seen better days, but there's always some good stuff, even in a struggling genre, if you're willing to search and find it.

you have a small fortune then xP
DOOMs CDs cost so much (pretty freakin rare  )
hoping he does more re-releases like he did with MM.. Food so we can all purchase his CDs and support one of the better hip hop artists around today

I agree that practically every Stones Throw artist is full of quality though :p
Great label to be under :)
Sadly, he hasn't put anything out since the Dangerdoom album.
He should have a new record soon
If you look up his lip sync/impostor scandal (he doesn't normally do this, only at a few recent shows to somehow use it as a marketing ploy/promotion for his new record: read his wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MF_Doom )

curious as to what his new album will be like

edit: forgot to mention that he should be doing a Madvillainy 2 with Madlib sooner or later too (with Monkey Suite as their sorta first single together since the first album)

1. Just a Thought - Song is as true as it gets. Cee-Lo wears his heart on his sleeve, as opposed to putting up the fake front many artists, celebrities put on. Danger Mouse on the boards is absolute sickness, but what's new?

2. I rebelled against the radio, MTV a few years back. I went searching on my own. As an old school hip-hop fan, raised on De la Soul, Tribe, and the like, I was dissatisfied with what pop culture was pushing. If you didn't sell drugs, have guns, or swear every two words, it was "pussy rap." Finding lyrics that actually meant something was tough in the genre unless you delved deeper. Little Brother, any Doom shit, Roots, De la, gets me through my days.

3. Just got to know where to look for it.

I got two copies of the original 'MM...Food,' one of which is sealed, but I opened the first one back in the day when the CD first dropped. All the KMD CDs are fairly rare as well, but I have opened all of those.

Hm, I haven't listened to their new album yet, but I loved their first one.

1.) This is really a tough question, but like others stated in this thread already, I really loved Just a Thought. I'm a sucker for the drum arrangements.

1. If you are a fan of Gnarls Barkley, what is your favorite song by them and why?

I like the song "Smiley Faces" and the slowed down version of "Crazy."

2. Who do you feel is making good music these days?

Daft Punk.

Yeah getting all these albums was a major pain and I take pride in my collection (though its currently packed up, damn moving), one of the few artists I enjoy enough to not only buy a few cds, but the entire collection. I'm not a huge pirate, but if something is quality and well put together, I will buy it, no matter what random internet stranger says about me wasting my money.

And yeah Madvillainy 2 should drop soon, though I personally think Madvillain is Dumile's weakest stuff, I'll obviously still pick it up. His weakest stuff is still miles better than most if not all mainstream music.

1. I'd be kidding myself if I picked something other than "Crazy" in spite of its ubiquity. It's one of the catchiest songs of the past several years and deserving of its popularity.

2. I'm a fan of the Black Keys (whose latest album, incidentally, is produced by Danger Mouse), Nick Cave, Josh Ritter, Shelby Lynne, Explosions in the Sky, El-P, Aesop Rock, and any good indie hip-hop.

3. There's always good music to be found and heard. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't dug deep enough (which is actually quite understandable in its own right, too).

Note: The board isn't liking any type of formatting so it is shoving everything in one long line...sorry 1) I'm not going to lie, Crazy is the only song I've heard. But I have been considering getting the new album to give them a try. 2) I feel that this band named Hurt is making good music, they are slowly on the rise and have a very unique sound 3) Bands are making good music it is just hard to 'find' them, since all radio stations are playing the mainstream, all similar 'popular' music over and over, that it is hard to find a good band unless you use sites such as Pandora, or listen to music from your friends

1) Transformer...fast, upbeat, and they do the voices perfect.... like anything transformers though cause of my tattoo i guess

2. Bands that are not afraid to try new things Gorillaz, NIN new online-only album, Daft Punks live album +++++

3) I used to love hip hop/rap, although there hasn't been much of anthing after the yr. 2000 that really draws my attention....Boo hip pop

{pretty cool idea xGunCrazyx by the way}

3. because they all sell out and go the angsty teen pop/rock direction and it all sucks. All the alt rock bands sound the same now on the radio, it's so pointless to listen anymore...

2. Who do you feel is making good music these days?

Right now I like The New Pornographers, The Dresden Dolls, Clare Fader, Sons and Daughters and The Horrorpops.
