How tolerant is the 360 with scratched discs?

Allnatural

CAGiversary!
I've mentioned in other threads that the copy of Blue Dragon I bought recently (new) is not exactly in pristine condition, particularly the third disc. It was the last copy at TRU, so exchanging it is not an option. I'd hate to get 30 hours into the game before the disc drive chokes.

I'm hoping it's like my PS2, which doesn't seem to care how bad the discs are. Some of the used games I've purchased are in rotten shape, but they've always played fine. Even the 360 seems ok with audio CDs (some of the CDs I've played, without problems, are completely mangled), but I'm worried that DVDs will be a different matter.

So, what's your experience?

[edit]

My 360 has a BenQ drive in it, if that makes any difference.

I think it's very bad with scratched disks. There was a pretty good thread in lifehacker.com about scratched discs. Using toothpaste and such...not to mention other types of household cleaning.

I got blue dragon from gamefly and it kept freezing in certain spots. Said it couldn't read it. I just cleaned it with a clean cloth...but it still seemed to have other spots it would do it. Then I just focused cleaning it for a while then the whole first disc played fine. I'm at the second disc so will see how it does.

Still these scratches were really minor...then again might not have been the scratches just dirty I guess.

The last time I had a scratched disc playing, my 360 had to be sent to the repair center for DVD drive failure. Not sure if the disc caused the failure directly, or at all. But I never take a chance with badly scratched discs anymore.

You can always have the disc's scratches cleaned up from some places. Never personally tried that, but heard it works miracles.

Good luck with BD.

The Disc Dr. is a good idea on paper, but it leaves marks on your discs that will cause them to be rejected if you ever try to trade them in. Nobody wants a Disc Dr.'ed game, it's just not a good resurfacing solution.

Yeah, I've had to resurface 2 games with toothpaste when they only had a little mark that really shouldn't have caused a DRE.

Like the pope said, resurfacing will make them look like crap (even though they will work now)... so trading them in anywhere will be YMMV.

My Forza 2 looks like it's been washed with a brillo pad but it works fine. I've never had disc error due to scratches but it has froze on bad finger smudges.

i just cleaned my scratched copy of Cabelas Safari with Windex that would freeze everytime at the exact same time and it didnt freeze this time! It worked!!

I exchanged my copy of BD (turns out one of the TRUs in town had a few copies tucked away). Discs one and two are clean (no scratches or smudges, unlike the first copy I bought), but disc three looks nearly the same. A few blemishes (scuff marks, I think) in much the same shape/orientation as the first. Bizarre.

Here's hoping it plays fine because I don't feel like exchanging it again...

I buy almost all my games used, and with that, besides lower prices, usually comes with scratched discs.

I, honestly, have only had a problem with about two or three games out of... let's see, probably 70+ games or more that I've played (Def Jam: Icon, Halo 3, and most recently - which was a rental, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 [ although, I was able to play the entire game, it was just after I beat it, when I was looking through a menu, it suddenly happened.. but it was pretty much perfectly fine on everything else ]).
