How does the warranty for PS3 work?

My PS3 that I just purchased doesn't accept the disk. How does Sony handle the warranty? Will they pay for shipping to send it back?
 
It's a 60gb I bought at retail. I would like to keep it if possible. Does Sony charge for shipping?
