Whats your budget? 500-1000$? 1000-1500$? 1500-2000$? Let me know and I will help you out, I just started building gaming rigs for a small business.

I'm also getting a new gaming computer soon. I know I'm going to have a bunch of questions, as I've been completely out of the loop since I built my last comp 3 or 4 years ago. Would it be cool if I PM'd you with some questions?

you know i found that when i was looking at building my first gaming pc that the easiest way to gain a knowledge base is to do research on components
some people may prefer intel to amd etc but the numbers dont lie.
so getting one persons point of view is great but getting actually data is better in my opinion.
a great place to start is tomshardware.com or http://www.anandtech.com/
just as another opinion

Alternakid, here's the number that settled the AMD vs Intel debate for me.

Number of AMD motherboards with PCI-E: 0

Very true. SOme good research will do ya good. It all really depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to do with it. Budget goes a LOOOONG way with a gaming pc

actually there are 2 AMD athlon 64 pcie boards, they may not be readily available but they are out, ati made a pcie board as did via's sli line of boards
too tired to link

I would go with an AMD 3500+ which is a 64 bit processor and GEforce 6800 GT. you can overclock these to the ultra speed and they are 200 buck cheaper!
get AMD3000+ 939 w/ thermalright xp90 or xp120 and oc it.

wait for the Nforce4 SLI board, and get 2 6800gts :D
2 6800gts... why?

I know a lot of the talk will center around processor speeds, how much RAM you have and the video cards, but I actually heard that the speed of your hard drive can really affect your game's performance. I think this becomes more of an issue when you're looking into pre-configured laptops as a nice mobile gaming rig, but something to keep in mind I guess.

I just upgraded my motherboard, CPU, RAM and graphics card. It cost me about $700 total and I am extremely satisfied with it.

Here's what I went for:
ASUS K8N nForce3 Mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
2x 512 MB DDR400 RAM from Crucial
BFG GeForce 6800 OC (128 MB)

Well this is what I could come up with for a sub $500 PC (without monitor)
