VIDEOGAME SELLERS TARGETED FRAUD info on half.com / ebay/ amazon

CAGiversary!

I want to warn CAGs about video game related fraud on half.com, ebay, and amazon.com that has drastically increased in the past 1-2 months. NOTE: This is primarly for half.com, but these addresses may be used on amazon.com and ebay.com as well.

They only buy video games and have hit me 5 times in the past 1-2 months.

They must be hijacking ebay IDS and changing the shipping addresses. This time they made a mistake, because they reused one of the addresses and I new it sounded familiar.

Ebay seems unwilling to fix the problem and the USPS will not handle it because they need to hear from the person whos identity has been stolen.

Here's what happens:

You get an email from half saying your item sold. You ship your item to the address half provided. A week later half tells you 'the purchase was made with unauthorized funds. Don't ship the item'. Now that they have successfully ordered 1 item, they hit you several more times with different IDs. I've been hit 5 times with their 6th attempt today. If someone makes regular sales, it may be difficult to weed out these buyers.

What to look for:

They typically order on Monday/Tuesday because the item has to be shipped by Thursday/Friday. That way they get the item before half/ebay contacts the seller.

The address tends to be in CA, so give them special attention.

Look for a recent feedback on the ebay ID within the last few days. Notice they have made several purchases all on half.com on the same day. Here is an example of one of the IDs they have used: http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=slvrdrgnshdw&ftab=AllFeedback

How to protect yourself:

Send an email through the half.com system and verify the mailing address.

Send with delivery confirmation so when half asks for proof it was shipped, you have it.

Keep a log of the addresses you ship to so you can flag the ones where fraud is committed.

Here is a list of addresses where they have the items shipped. If anyone else has the same problem it would be nice to compile a list (here) we can reference to avoid shipping items to these 'buyers'.

Thanks to FatBoyInside for updating the list! (yet again!)

thanks for the headsup bro, god i hate ebays new policies make it so friggiin impossibole to make a decent buck there anymore.

cheers,
Mike

Damn, that's actually a really cleaver method... I don't bother checking my account before I ship something when I sell on Half. I just ship using the info in the email.

I ALWAYS log in to PayPal and confirm funds and print a packing list. So much spam/phishing attempts out there -- never trust anything on the face value of an email. It's just common sense...

does this affect amazon? i notice you mentioned them but nothing specifically about amazon. Amazon doesn't use paypal or anything, and I take addresses directly from amazon's seller page.

So they charge you back after? or are you not withdrawing the money before you ship?

I always withdraw before shipping or wait for e-checks to clear...

thanks for the heads up, I only sell books on half.com but occasionally I'll sell a game or two on ebay. Usually I check ebay & paypal to see if the payment has been received to be safe. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for these suspicious bidders. I'm guessing they target Buy-it-Now auctions or auctions closing soon so they could get the game fast.

Note half.com works like amazon.com even though it is an ebay company. Funds do not go through paypal, they go directly to your linked bank account. Even if you transfer the funds, they can contact your bank and take the money back. I know some of this is common sense, but I am trying to teach other sellers how to protect themselves from this new scam.
So they charge you back after? or are you not withdrawing the money before you ship? I always withdraw before shipping or wait for e-checks to clear...
Half.com pays directly to a bank account, so they will take back the money/block the transfer if you do not have proof you shipped the item. So you will be out the item and not get any money either.

I need to clarify this is primarily on half.com, but these addresses may be used by the same scammers on ebay and amazon.

For ebay, you always have the paypal protection and can ship only to confirmed addresses with delivery confirmation.

As far as Amazon goes, I have been receiving an increasing number of orders that are placed, the item is shipped within 2 business days as amazon's TOS requires, then the buyer sends an email saying 'cancel'. The buyer files a claim, so you get a strike on amazon and they get their money back and they keep the item. The way to combat this is to ship with "tracking information." Delivery confirmation is not enough proof of delivery according to amazon. They need stop by stop tracking. Like UPS uses. I use signature confirmation for high end items and I use delivery confirmation on the USPS website and I also select the email activity and future activity boxes, so you have step by step tracking for amazon.

Wow, I did a transaction through them in April for Oblivion:GOTY(PS3) to this address:

Crystal Turner

I got the e-mail from half.com saying it was never received or something or rather and asked for the DC# and after I provided it, I haven't heard anything back. Thanks for getting this out to other people.

Seems like she is also selling her poems for - wait for it - 6.99 a pop.

What a bargain. With sales skills like this why did she have to resort to theft?

I have written some beautifully written Inspirational poems for: your Mother, your Mother-in-Law or for men, your Girlfriends...and for most, a couple of general poems, starting at $5.99 per poem in folder or in a frame. This is the first collection of many to come. I would like for you to come and check them out at: www.crystal-turner.com. Write down what poem, page number, on what kind of paper preferred and what color folder or frame you want...and press "[email protected] and place your order. Use the instructions on page 1 on how to make your payment...once your payment is received, depending on the method made, your order will go out with in 24 to 48 hours. Leave your comments or sign my Guestbook. Thank you for your support for us Single Mothers.

Looks like the guestbook is down :(

To be fair she could be a pawn of a 508 scammer - who knows.

Get me all the SoCal addresses. I will pass them and the info on to my family and friends in the LAPD and some other agencies. Maybe even pay these guys a visit. The Panorma City and Van Nuys should be covered by LAPD, I don't think either of those are independent cities. Pasadena will have to be wilth Pasadena PD though.

If you get me all the pertinent information, I can pass it along to my LAPD contacts and see who it should go to, hopefully get a resolution moving faster, Slowdive.

All jokes aside, I googled " Crystal Turned van nuys" and bunch of things popped up.

This same thing happened to me. i sold bioshock for $40 and then 3 weeks after i shipped the item out to the O'neal hamilton, CA address, i was infomred by half.com of unauthorized funds. Now dumbass half.com wants proof of delivery which i can't provide b/c i just sent it out regular usps mail.

i responded to half.com that delivery was not a problem, but it was a problem stemming from unauthorized funds. I sent half.com 3 respones, and each time they replied with a generic e-mail saying that they need the delivery tracking info. Half.com just ignores everything i write in my e-mails. I can't even find a customer service person to talk to. This is ridiculous. I will no longer sell anything on half.com again.

I got screwed over by the very same Crystal Turner that is on your list. My problem was they waited almost two full months to file a claim, and I don't usually keep the delivery confirmation slips that long so I couldn't prove I had sent it.

Nice to know I'm not alone.

Something I've learned to do is always send a PM or something equivalent to the 'buyer' when sending games that includes the tracking number. Do I still have the slip from when I sent? Probably, but I was easily able to access the DC# from checking the interaction log from the transaction.

I got hit by the same person, but I kept the delivery confirmation number. Wow, it's amazing that so many CAGs got hit by this same guy/girl.

I wonder if someone should send them a package with a note scaring them.
Maybe if I get some time this weekend, I should go pay Crystal a visit. Claim I want my packages back.

Theres a place on Paypal to enter tracking info, which will send an email to the buyer to tell them it has shipped (handy, no more "have you shipped my item???" messages), and it sure beats trying to keep my paper receipts organized.

Here's the thing...next time any of us gets an order from these guys....we should send an empty package with delivery confirmation. Then we will be paid for sending nothing. haha.

fux those crooks. I lost $40 on my sale of bioshock. half.com just sent me an email saying they would deduct that from my bank account. What would happen if I just told my bank that it was not an authorized debit from my account?

I also sold an item on half.com that was mailed to that address in March. In May, half.com wrote to me asking for proof of delivery. I responded with all the information, and they told me no problem, that's all I needed to do.

I ship everything using PayPal shipping, so my numbers are always stored. Really no excuse for selling anything online, to anyone, in any venue and not using at least delivery confirmation. Doing USPS through PayPal, DC is 18 cents on First Class and Media Mail.

I got a similar email from half.com for 2 of my transactions, but I had Delivery Confirmation (since they've included the link to Print SHipping Label directly in your "Sales" section). I've been selling stuff on half.com for 5 to 6 years now...and haven't really had too much trouble with them.

Also, I was able to find a phone number for Half.com:

800-545-9857

Good luck!

Update:
I sold a Legos Star Wars Complete Saga PS3 to a Crystal Turner on 3/31, and on 4/21 got an email from Half.com asking for Shipping Information because they got a chargeback request from the customer.

Good thing I printed the shipping label through Paypal, it included Delivery Confirmation, and after I sent the info to half.com, that was the end of that. So they never took the $ out of my account for that transaction because I had proof I shipped the item.

Delivery Confirmation is the sellers' friend!~

When you signed up for their service it was probably in the agreement somewhere where they can take funds out of your account.

So I've been using half.com for years with no issues and suddenly I'm getting several chargeback notices from people using (according to half.com) stolen credit cards to purchase games from me. I sold a copy of Heavenly Sword and one scammer tried to buy it but was caught by half.com before I shipped...the second was caught only after I shipped.

So even though half.com received delivery confirmation when I ship through Paypal since it's connected to their system, they send me an e-mail asking for that same delivery confirmation as proof I shipped (why this matters in the case of fraud, I'm not sure. If the buyer had claimed to not receive the game, I could understand.) Anyway, the e-mail gives you 3 days to reply or you automatically have the funds removed from your account.

I replied immediately, but what if I was on vacation? I think this is just a scam by half.com to try to skirt their responsibility for chargebacks. After all, I'm sure a good percentage of people won't reply to those e-mails within 3 days. Half.com already has the delivery confirmation info...they have no need to deliver an ultimatum via e-mail with an arbitrary deadline for a second copy of the info they already have.

Too bad I didn't see this thread earlier. Here's the second fraud address:

Had this happen late last year - same Crystal Turner. Had another address w/ same situation that was a grocery store. Called and verified the name on the order wasn't anyone who worked there. Weird thing was, they kept buying the same game - it was Marvel Alliance. I reposted it for sale twice after the first incident, and they KEPT buying it.

Is it possible it's a bot-program doing most of the work?

Have any of you called the phone numbers listed for some of these people under whitepages.com or any other online phone book?

Buyer:cynbar768849
Shipping Address:Cynthia Barnett

As soon as I saw the name I remembered your post, lol
Funny thing is that the game this person purchased from me was also Heavenly Sword.

Kinda off topic, but I sold my laptop on Ebay, and the person quickly paid with PayPal and it was confirmed and everything.

So I send out my laptop with the "confirmed" Paypal address, and I get it back like a week later as a return to sender. The message me the next day and I told them what the problem was, and how I will resend since I must have done the address wrong and so on. The person was (suspiciously) understanding.....

So I double check the address on the package and on PayPal. Nope matches. I let the person know. Then they remember that's an old address and I should send to a person by another name and different address, and for there troubles ship it overnight. I was like no. I will ship to your confirmed address and no 24 hour shipping. This is when the buyer's English starts getting worse and worse....and then "oh we actually moved to out of country and gift is for son in the schools in US". Then they start pressuring me to close the dispute and the send the laptop put. And what close means, as far as I know, is return the money. So yeah, that quite a scam that I thought was quite clever and somewhat similar.

Basically its a win-win for them. All they need is 1000 or more or less dollars in a PayPal account with an "old" address or someone elses. Pay quickly have the person send it out, the seller gets it back and feels bad. If they are ignorant they will send out the laptop overnight (feeling bad that they didn't get them the item), then the next message is the buyer saying "you need to close the dispute.." And if they don't know what else to do they will, and PayPal will take the now in limbo moeny and give to the buyer, and they will recieve the laptop the next day.....

Not to mention the seller eats the 10 dollar dispute charge, and the person can leave negative feedback on top of that for, not receiving item on time.

p.s: I refused to send my laptop, and closed the account and informed PayPal as to why and my theory of the scam.

Guess who filed a chargeback...Crystal Turner from an item I shipped 5/7/08 (or the person who was charged for the item). I called half and explained what is going on. I am also putting a link to this thread for them to review.

If any of you would like to include your half ID/transaction numbers that were purchased by Ms. Turner, PM me and I will send a compiled list to half (the rep suggested I do that).

Just your username and the transaction number...I don't need your real name or address.

I just got a chargeback from Crystal Turner as well! My first in 9 years on eBay/Half.com

I used delivery confirmation and it shows delivered to Van Nuys, Ca.

I have been selling on Half.com for years, and have refunded over $2,500,000 worth of fraudulent orders. If you sell on HDC, I wrote an eBay Guide on how to protect yourself against fraud.

Half.com Sellers - Protecting against Fraud
http://reviews.ebay.com/Half-com-Sellers-Protecting-against-Fraud_W0QQugidZ10000000008091498

I was at eBay Live this year in Chicago, and HDC talked about changing how they handle charges, and these fraud problems should go away. I'm not holding my breath, but if they do what they promised, the "fraud check" will go BEFORE the "You've Made a Sale" emails.

When I actually had some unauthorized debits from my account, I had to fill out a notarized sworn statement saying they were unauthorized. I basically signed a legal document saying that I was not lying. So if you are lying and the bank finds out, then there will probably be repercussions.

I don't blame you at all as Ebay has become the spawning ground to thieves/fraud. It's disgusting.

OP thanks for the tip/heads up. Any means to get the word out always helps track this idiots down.

transfer... I opened an entirely second account at my bank not attached to my personal accounts in any way. One is in my name, and my wifes name has all our personal stuff.

Unrelated I don't transfer I just flat out empty the account if I get worried. Good luck paypal.

You must have opened a sub account?

This is not a ridicule, I am trying to figure out what scenario you ran into with this to protect myself. I only use Ebay near Christmas really anymore. I stockpile my stuff (older PC games) and then dump them starting late October.

Same name running this long is sick. Something should be done. I think I have even sent to a Crystal Turner beofer but no charge backs ever came of it.

Anybody seen any shit about a Yolanda Molina? Pretty sure I'm getting fucked over, courtesy of Paypal.

Edit: The name on the account is Yolanda Molina, but it's shipped to Ramon Arias (in California). This definitely seems suspicious.

I woulda withdrawn all the money I had in my Paypal account, but they put a $500 limit on it, probably to make it easier for sellers to get scammed.

Crystal turner ripped me off. so i found her phone number online and gave her a call. it turns out that her boyfriend was using stolen credit cards to order games. I didnt use dc on the first game i sent them, so after finding out it was a fake order i hurried up and mailed them a crappy book with delivery confirmation.

I emailed half.com the DC number and they let me keep the money

Wow, in August Half.com asked me for Shipping Info on an order I filled back in July, sent it to them...and I just got an email today saying they're taking the $ out of my account because of buyer chargeback and it's strongly suggesting I purchase tracking service and insurance to protect against loss.

I gave them the shipping info that said the item was delivered!!! And yet they can STILL take the $$$??? Now I'm out the copy of Heavenly Sword, and the $. I just wrote half.com an email again to complain about it. It's not about buying insurance to protect against loss, they're making commission from the sellers! The buyers don't pay them...we do. And yet we're the ones that get screwed.

As soon as Half debits my account, i'm calling my bank to dispute the charge. Screw Half, i'm closing my account. Thanks for having my back.

This is amazing. This Crystal Turner (or her bf) has ripped everyone off and completely gotten away scot free.

I'm just using Amazon from now on.
