(OOS) PS3 MGS4 bundle in stock @ Amazon
Do these have partial backwards compatibility with PS2?
Yes, these have backwards compatiblity with most ps2 games. The 80 gbs in september won't have backwards compatibility.
No tax for most states... some states do :(
I know. I totally feel for you guys. If they did that here, they'd lose all the random impulse buys my friends and I do as irresponsible, overpaid dorks. I'd have bought the bundle local for extended warranty or something if I had to pay tax anyway.

IMO this is the way to go if you want a PS3. And unfortunately it sounds like they're going to ditch backwards compatibility AGAIN :bomb::bomb::bomb: (I wish they'd discontinue the tard pack, not this model).

Also I *think* this actually has better backwards compatibility than they claim, or it's been improved or something. I ran Shadow of Destiny on it, and it seems just fine even though that was my only PS2 game that supposedly doesn't work right on it.

Only issues I've seen with PS2 stuff are video playback can have some slight issues-small horizontal lines through them now and again (and that's 720p through HDMI...could be it only happens if it's upscaling the games or something). But it seems as solid as the 20/60GB model was (knock on wood). I *HATE* that Sony completely 180ed on their backwards compatibility stance.

@Wolfpup - I agree with ya. Why can't they make a cost-cutting version without BC and then sell a simple add-on or something. Even two SKUs would be okay since HDD capacity is so pointless on the PS3. One SKU for a 60GB w/o BC for $399 and one with full BC (like the old 20/60) for $499.

Glad I got my b-day money early :) Should be here on 7/29

& I would rather have just BC PS3s instead of this "more than 1" SKU BS everyone else but Nintendo has. Microsoft had to be the one to start this garbage...

Sony has said that they want people to "move on" and buy the ps2 along with ps3 games. They also made a statement saying that they've found that most people who are requesting for BC are ps2 owners (no shit?) What Sony doesn't seem to understand is there still millions of people with ps2's that have been around for 5+ years (like mine) and if they break, people aren't going to want to drop another $130 on a new ps2. Some people have gaming collection of ps2 games that goes up to 60-100s (sadly). At this point, I can't afford a new ps3 even though it's the best time to get one in order to maintain BC. I'm not spending $130 for a new ps2, but I don't want my gaming collection of ps2 games to waste. I just wish Sony would offer a BC Package available for purchase so that you could update your ps2 to have BC.

Yeah, a backwards compatibility add on would be better than nothing. I don't like splitting the market like that.

This all pisses me off too because Sony CLAIMED they cared about it, and they also made fun of Microsoft for multiple SKUs...and then managed to out-do Microsoft with it. At least with the Xbox even the cheapest system can be updated to be identical to the most expensive.

I don't have to own any Playstation 1 hardware because the PS2 handles that so perfectly. Otherwise I'd have to have two of those things sitting in my basement. That was a big reason I kind of standardized on the PS2. Same WOULD have been true with the PS3, but now I don't know. Sony takes this away from us sort of, and Microsoft is sort of fixing their noise problem, so...I don't know.

Totally not thread crapping, but if these go OOS, most stores around the Pontiac/Waterford, MI area has these in-stock. Sucks about all the tax you would have to spend in-store. Just saying for those looking for one in my area. Pretty sweet deal. MGS 4 is awesome. This is the perfect bundle for those waiting to dive into the best of the PS3 library.

This nicely summarizes where I'm at with PS3. A little tempted by this bundle, because it looks like BC and the card slots/extra ports are going away (until Sony adds yet another SKU). But as long as the "best of the PS3 library" = one game, I'm still passing. Perhaps after I get blown away by some combination of Resistance 2, SOCOM, Killzone 2, and MAG... but it looks like BC may be a memory by then. (Thinks of my PS2 and channels Han Solo: "Hear me, baby? Hold together...")

I just want to point out, the 80GB BC console may not necessarily be going away.

Remember when they announced that the 40GB would be the only system available? Hmm, well don't you look at that, they're still selling the 80GB BC console as a bundle with MGS4!

It's not hard facts, but I just wanted to point it out.

Gah this is so tempting. I had a PS3 but sold it when I realized I was going to move out for college and it seemed redicouls to live in a small area and own three gaming consoles and a gaming pc. Now I want to play the new ratchet and clank and resistance still. Unfortunetly I never owned a PS2 and can't do without the backwards compatibility. I own 8 PS2 games and still need to play many of the better games. At $500 my gaming obsession is killing me.

I don't know if people qualify this as a deal still (why I'm bumping this instead of making a new thread), but it is back in stock now, which seems to be a rare occurrence lately.

I also want to point out that they only sell 40gb in Europe and Japan

You were right to bump it, I was looking for the MGS bundle thanks man.

Didn't Sony announce the next 80GB model will be based on the 40GB with double the HDD capacity (in other words, no BC)???

Once the MGS4 bundle is gone from all distributors, we might never see another PS3 /w BC capability.
80GB PS3s are not going away. We just got a huge shipment of 80GB PS3s (not the MGS4 PS3) in stock at my BB store.
The non-bundles are just the 40GB model with an 80GB hdd (as in, no BC). It's (rather confusingly) not the same thing.

Either these are ACTUALLY going away soon (in which case, I'm glad I grabbed mine up already so I'll have BC) or else Sony is trying to increase demand by either:
1) Circulating rumors that the BC models will be discontinued (fabricating demand)
2) Actually planning to discontinue them (unless they sell like crazy, in which case they'll wait until the last possible minute to announce that they're ACTUALLY going to continue this model, due to consumer demand)

the MGS bundle is just short of being the perfect bundle, if only they made this one 100% BC. I bought one when my 60gb was fucked up. Decided to tweak around with it and to my surprise it started working again. Good thing I didn't open the 80gb, but yes anyone looking for an excuse to get a ps3...this is it!

Grr... and my birthday was on the 21st when I was told to find the one I want and order it. Of course, now it's out of stock and I'm stuck either paying tax or having to settle for the gimped 80 GB version.

The gimped 80gb isn't that bad. I owned the motorstorm bundle before and apparently its the same 90nm as the MGS bundle ps3, hence the fan kicks in and yes you can hear it if you live in a nice quiet neighborhood. Even though BC would be nice, getting a 65nm "quieter" ps3 would give you better enjoyment for movies and games.
