Hi, I am MarkMan and I love arcade sticks.

I was inspired to create this thread because of the discussion going on in the Soul Calibur IV Hori Arcade Stick (PS3/360) deal thread.

Let us use this thread as a resource and a place where we can ask questions and get answers for all things arcade stick related!

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with my modded SCIV stick at the moment (octa gate + bat top + shaft cover + new dust cover!) since I got it pretty cheap. I'll maybe get a more expensive stick later this year or early next when I get some holiday money or something.

I wonder how the SFIV stick is turning out!

Great thread. I used to play Street Fighter competitively and actually built my own arcade sticks way back in the day...probably 12 or so years old by now! Sticks are beat up and I kinda want an upgrade. But i can wait till Street Fighter IV.

Is it confirmed that new sticks will be made for Street Fighter IV? Any news on its build quality? I know the Soul Calibur sticks aren't quite good enough and am hoping they go with something new instead of a rebrand.

It has been confirmed that SFIV will be having a stick. And MM has been saying that the stick will be a very good one.

That Real Arcade Pro 3 looks awesome. You'd probably have to cover it, though or keep it away from sunlight when not in use so it doesn't get suntanned.

Nice thread MarkMan. It is taking ALL of my will power not to buy a SC IV stick. I'm trying so damn hard to wait until the SF IV sticks are out.

I'm going to tier the recent sticks that are still available(or coming out soon)... this is just based on my knowledge/experience and opinion. The ranking is based on quality, parts used, and performance. Please note that pricing is not taken into consideration in this list. Why? Quality is the more important issue here.

S - Rank

 • SEGA Virtua Stick High Grade (PS3)
 • Hori Real Arcade Pro 2 SA (PS2)
 • Street Fighter IV Arcade Stick Pro (PS3, 360) *
A - Rank

 • Hori Real Arcade Pro Amazon Japan (PS2)
 • Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 (PS3)
 • Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 Amazon Japan (PS3)
 • Hori Real Arcade Pro EX (360)
B - Rank

 • Hori Fighting Stick EX2 (360) - Same as Dead or Alive 4 Arcade Stick and Soulcalibur IV Arcade Stick.
 • Street Fighter IV Arcade Stick (PS3, 360) *
C - Rank

 • Hori Fighting Stick 3 (PS3) - Same as Soulcalibur IV Arcade Stick.
D - Rank

* - Not yet released.

If anyone has any other arcade sticks that you think should be added, let me know. Again this is just from my experience. And I've used them ALL... lol.

Holy shit... the SF IV stick must be a beast the way you're talking about it. Any idea what the design is like?

And I'm guessing the Tekken stick is B-rank?

Got kinda a noob question here.

I've been thinking about finally buying arcade sticks for my various systems , but I was wondering , are most (some) arcade sticks sutible for playing most fighting games or are most of them designed for a specific series of games and aren't as good with other series.

This has partly been to blame for me never having bought a stick before , cause although I would like a stick for each of my systems , I don't really want to buy multiple sticks for one system (unless of course there really good or look cool;)).

Well from what I've heard, going with a Japanese style stick (with a ball on the stick as opposed to a bat) is better for really fast games like Guilty Gear or Melty Blood. A HRAP or Tekken stick seems to be good for basically everything, from my experience.

it's the only stick I feel comfortable playing on my lap, Im so used to playing on the floor but my room is so cramped it takes to much effort to create an ad hoc environment

man, you know you're a stick geek when you see someone's HRAP 2 and say

"Man, nice stick. i noticed you modded it with seimitsus, nice."

also, nice sticks are great but i've seen good players play on cheap sticks so to each his own =)

Yeah, I don't expect a nice stick to make me any better, but if I'm going to be playing as many fighting games as I think I will, I want something that feels like... damn nice. As in, like, "man, fuck that arcade bullshit" nice.

Most sticks will be fine with every other fighting game, unless that fighting game has some weird/wonky setup (recent Mortal Kombat titles).

And yea I'd stick the Tekken 5 Anniversary Stick in B.

Thanks, this is very helpful. Seems like Hori is going to be making the Street Fighter sticks. Any idea on the prices?

I would pull the Virtua Stick High Grade down to an A Rank since it has that problem with 3-simultaneous button presses... Last time I checked (back in April or so), people still had issues with it.

Any word on when the REAL ps2 to ps3 converters will be back in stock? I'm going to be getting HRAP1 soon and I was thinking of picking up one.

speaking of which adapters are real, surely there must be one other than that expensive Pelican one that works. Amazon has a bunch of different ones available on the cheap. Can anyone vouch for one of the non-Pelican ones?

The REAL converter when it comes back in stock and some elusive Korean converter that's only sold in Korea.
Any word on when the REAL ps2 to ps3 converters will be back in stock?
Some time after the Olympics.

The Korean one is InPin, I'm going to try and get a couple to review soon hopefully.

The VSHG, IMO is still S. Just my opinion though. The multi input issue is only with Tekken 5 DR and some emulators. Is there any other games anyone has experienced it with?

I modded my HFS3 today. AKA I put hockey tape on the ball cause my hand kept sliding off. Shitty mod for a shitty stick.

still got a new SF ann arcade stick myself, gonna unload this beast on ebay sometime, but a SF IV arcade stick? sounds nice any pictures or what not of the thing confirmed yet?

Seriously? I feel like the Tekken 5 stick had the right idea... It's something that has enough room for all the buttons and for your hands to rest, and it's heavy enough to not move.
I play with the stick on my lap...T5 stick is a wee bit uncomfy sitting on your lap for hours on end.
I play wit dat stick in my lap, too. Well, to each his own, I suppose.
This is a good thread. Why isn't this a sticky??
Because it doesn't appeal to a whole lot of people. But those people are hacks, anyway.

I think the HRAP design is nice/solid. It is definitely bulky compared to other arcade sticks.

I prefer the design of the VSHG and the Namco Arcade Stick (My favorite stick ever)...

Markman - great job on the thread...rock and roll!

So is the SFIV stick going to be in the EX2 price bracket, and the Pro in the HRAP bracket?

Were any of the higher end Hori sticks available at Gamestop? I've only seen a mid-level....the Hori Fighting Stick 3 ($49.99). I'm hoping the Pro version of the Street Fighter stick will be available there.

Way back in the day i bought a Hori Fighting Stick PS. It still works! I wonder if i can mod the buttons, they are pretty bad.

The only place in the US that carried/distributed the high end Hori sticks officially were from the old VGO store.

Since then we haven't seen a high end stick at retail :(

Well I guess I'll show off my first joystick mod!

It's a FS3 with an OCTO Gate and Sanwa buttons I didn't get a matching ball top yet. But this is mainly just for playing games with.....

BTW the Sanwa buttons where a bitch :whistle2:#

Hmm...I like that Sirlin and Killian joined capcom. It seems like Capcom is taking our opinions to heart now. We should go on the capcom message boards when it is announced and request distribution to our local stores. I imagine it would sell well at amazon and gamestop.

:applause:

So is a square gate better than an octagonal gate, or is it really just a preference thing? I feel like when I pick up a new stick, I want an octagonal gate just because of how it seems like it'd be easier to differentiate between hitting down vs. down-right. Ya know?

To me it makes no difference in games like Tekken or Soul Calibur....

But for games like S3's and Mark of the Wolves yes BIG difference the octo-gate makes like night and day!

It is totally preference.

In arcades (in Japan) most panels have square gates, I'd say way more than a good majority of them.

The SF IV panel has square as well, Sanwa sticks.

I suppose if I wanted an octagon gate, I'd have to mod in a stick? From what I've seen, all the really ballin' sticks have square gates...

Either way, I wanna try one... just seems like it'd feel a lot more natural.
