Does anyone know how PS3 responds to 1680x1050?

I'm thinking of buying a 22'' 1680x1050 PC monitor. I can't really afford to buy the 1080p 32'' Samsung goliath, so i plan on using the monitor as a substitute.
I'm not sure how the PS3 reacts to a 16:10 layout. Does it automatically adjust? How good does it look? Also, is there a 1680x1050 monitor that supports 1080p (downscaled) and full 720p?

i know my 360 will soon support 1680x1050 through VGA, but Im not sure how my PS3 looks at that resolution through a hdmi-to-dvi-d.

Serious helpful responses only please.

it doesn't have an option for the resolution so i just put mine into 720p and it fills the entire screen, doesn't look bad at all i played mgs4 on it.

Same here, I have a acer 22" widescreen and the PS3 looks pretty good in 720P

edit: fyi I hooked it up with a HDMI to DVI cable

I'm not an expert, but when a TV or monitor's resolution doesn't fall into the 1080p mold, they drop down into the next highest resolution possible, which in your case would be 720p. The only other resolution you could run your PS3 at is 1080i. I've done that, and don't find it looks bad at all.

I run my PS3 through component to my 22" LCD @ 720p and it looks great. I haven't done DVI yet as I need to buy a HDMI cable(I have a HDMI to DVI adapter already) and im cheap :).

PS3 and 360 (through DVI and VGA respectively) looked great on my 22 inch acer. Considering you can get these monitors for just over $200, they're a great deal.

I have a 1680x1050 22in Widescreen monitor that I have the PS3 hooked up to with a DVI-HDMI cable. The resolution IS 1080P and the image fills the entire screen. Looks great. I can supply model # if you want

I have a 20" Samsung 206BW, I'm pretty sure it uses the same resolution as yours. What model do you have Smiggity, and how do you know it's running 1080p? Is there an info setting in your monitor's control panel that tells you?

Well beyond the PS3 telling me that I am running 1080p there is nothing. It is really just a stopgap Envision monitor I got for like 170 at BB. I didnt even expect it to last this long.

Model # G218A1

I have a 19" Samsung 940BW (1440x900). For some reason it displays 1080p content and it looks visibly better than 720p. The monitor also recognizes the input resolution as being 1920x1080. The only explanation I have is that it scales 1080p down to the native resolution of the monitor, hence why it still looks better than 720p.

I wouldn't be surprised if it does the same thing for you.

Thanks guys. I guess the downscaling explanation makes sense, and 1050p wouldn't look that much different than 1080p. I would try it one of these days if it wasn't for my TV being, oh, about 23" larger!

Well, it's not 1080p, but 1050p since he's missing the other 30. I have a Samsung 22" and I run it in 720, though I could run it in 1080 but than every time an annoying little notice comes up on the moniter telling me my moniter doesn't support the full resolution. I just need to press a button to get rid of it, simple enough, but annoying. Whether you play it in 720 or 1080 you'll have a bit of overscan since it is 16:10 and not 16:9, otherwise you'll be fine.
