$125 is still a ripoff.

Chris
My thoughts exactly....Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves. They could sell these much cheaper and still make a profit.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but if you already have a 360 hard drive (say a 20GB), I thought it was relatively easy to buy a 120GB notebook drive and upgrade it. I've seen compatible notebook drives selling for $40-50 without really researching it too much. I think the official 120GB hard drive would need to drop to around $60 before it really became a decent deal.

Even if you didn't have a hard drive, don't they have a program coming out that will allow you to snag a 20GB for $20? That would still make it considerably cheaper to just upgrade your drive yourself... basically like getting a free game with the hard drive when you factor in the savings :)

I was planning to look into this more once the dashboard update came out. If the functionality to copy games to the hard drive is as nice as it sounds, I think a lot of people are going to be looking to upgrade their drives. This would make the information on how to do so even more readily available.

To make it short: can't be done.

You can do it, but you need a Security Sector from a real 120GB hard drive to do it. And since the SS holds information about the size, you can only use 120GB of space at the most. (A 250GB hard drive would only have 120GB showing.) Also, since you copied someone else's SS, if you're both on Live at the same time, you could get banned.

It's a complicated process and not worth the trouble. Spend the extra $30 and get a used MS 120GB.

I went ahead and purchased one Monday. I really didn't think that they will last once they reach $100, with the store employees snapping them up instead. (It did help that there was only one left at the store I checked anyway.)

When I purchased it, one of the guys remarked how he didn't know it was on clearance, the other one said he knew because someone pulled the label off to attempt to hide it. (It was in one of the locked pegs that needs an employee to unlock it to get it off the rack.)

From the way he was talking, It sounded like at least a couple of employees had "extra stock" hidden in back waiting for further price drops.

I think the 60 gig hard drive pack is going to go for $100 (it also includes some extra stuff like a xbox live headset), so I don't think a 120gig will get cheaper unless it is on sale/closeout anytime soon.

My local Target had the deal but they were sold out. I checked with another one by workplace but they had them marked at $179.99 and wouldn't budge on the price. Fortunately I found a used one at Gamestop today for $99.99.

Is that the normal price for a used 120GB at GS? I was going to wait until they were doing a used accessories coupon but the NXE update is coming up in ~2 weeks.
Honestly do you people have to come in every freaking thread? Seriously why must you do this?
I thought about saying something earlier however did not but.......

I rarely look inside those huge threads.....

I usually look to the main board for individually posted deals which catch my eye so I appreciate when people point out individual deals in the main forum.

So.....yes...it is a waste of space and time for a member to post a response about how the deal is contained within the huge huge....clearance threads. If the mods have a problem with threads such as this they will close them. Since they do not close them, they as most of us do....appreciate the individual threads for specific deals.

I have changed out harddrives for multiple XBOX 360's. I don't know why some people are spreading misinformation, but if you Google for the information you desire, then you can find it easily. The only real information posted was the following: the 360 will only recognize a 120 GB of any drive you use, and you need some specific files to get it running on the 360.

You need a certain brand / model of 120 GB drive. Most recently, I changed out my youngest nephew's harddrive. It cost me about $55 to buy the drive brand new. I switched out his 20 GB for the 120 GB. The whole process took me about a hour, and I was really taking my time.

I have played on LIVE for MONTHS with my nephews and friends (over a year?) from work that play on LIVE. My friends and myself have never had a single problem. My other older nephew, living in the same house, had his drive changed as well. They play each other without any problem.

If you wanted to build a 360 HDD from scratch, then you need another $20 to $25 on top of the $50 to $70 for the harddrive.

why would it take a whole hour to install, isn't it just an attachment and detach? I used to have a 360 and it read a 20G HD without any problems

lol. My thoughts exactly. This deal is kinda YMMV as my Target doesn't even carry any Xbox HDDs.

The 360 HDD's have a security sector? I thought it was just the games.

Actually all the deals like the 120gb hard drive is at front page the op always update it whenever someone posted a clearance at the target section so you don't have to go deep in the thread in order to find a clearance items. The front page is organize in which ps3, 360, DS, psp, and wii sections are arrange to lowest and to the highest price and also the date the clearance items is spotted.

Target clearance is always ymmv I never said that it is not.

How is $125 a deal?
Not flaming, just wondering. I mean... you might as well Craigslist your current 360 if you have one and buy an Elite straight up. New system, new 3 year warranty.

umm...you forget you have to take the hdd out of the casing and switch, then install all needed files ect to make it work?

that's the lowest i've seen but i'll wait until the holidays and see if it drops more. i hope amazon matches the price or does it better.

Shh....people are watching CAG all the time. We try to keep stuff like this in the big Target thread so people won't find out about it and we have all the deals to ourselves. We're jerks that way.

I got one, but I'm holding onto it since I know it's going to drop in price again soon.

This sounds like a lot of steps, but I decided to type up most of the "painful" details.

I had to hook the store-bought 120 GB to a PC, have the correct sector information for the size harddrive I wanted to use (120 GB is max), run the utilities, remove it from the PC, detach the 20 GB from the 360, take the 20 GB out of the "special" 360 casing (you could also make your own case or buy a shell from a website or eBay), put the newly created 120 GB in the casing, attach it back on to the 360 and format it through the 360 dashboard.

That took me about a hour. I'm sure someone could do it faster, but I wasn't in any rush. The process is simple. Any idiot could follow one of the dozens of online guides to change the harddrive out. I saved a ton of money for myself, friends and family. In addition, the access times are much better. For example, just signing into a profile, my nephew had tons of lag on his old 20 GB. His new 120 GB runs ultra smooth.

Can you send me a link the the hard drive you ordered. I found the correct hard drive (WD Scorpio), but started reading the program used relies on a certain version of that hard drive and I couldn't determine which version was on the website.

I bought one.
There are still some places (I'm looking at you Circuit City) that have these drives at $179.99, so yes, this is technically a deal.

I picked one up for $125 after deciding the Elite deals were dried up.
All the 120GB hard drives at my Target are on clearance for just over $125. Anyone think this is a good deal? I wonder if they'll go lower if they don't sell.
Still too high.

Ugh, maybe, MAYBE for $80. This price just needs to go down. This is one of the most aggravating things that bug me about my 360, peripheral/accessory/upgrade prices.

That's the normal used price for a 120GB HDD @ Gamestop. You can save another 10% with the Edge card as well or one of the 20% coupons as well. The problem is they are very hard to come by because I think the only way they get them is if someone trades in an Elite.

I didn't have a problem getting a migration kit from MS either. I called & they are sending it without any problems. It does take about 10 business days though, which means I should have it right when NXE comes out.
