F.A.Q.'s
Achievements:
Live Community Games do not have achievements that count toward your gamerscore.

Demos:

Each game includes a "demo" that are time constricted trials that are often too short to make a decision on the game. It was four minutes long, but now it is eight. Source.

Pricing:

How much will Community Games sell for? Creators can chose to sell games for 200, 400 or 800 MS points. The maximum size limit for 200 point games is 50 MB. For 400 and 800 points games the max size is 150 MB.

Do I have to be online to play Community Games?
You have to be online to start your Community Game. After you start the game you can go offline. This is said to be so Microsoft can verify that you are of an appropriate age to play the game you selected.

Will I get updates for community games?
As of right now there is no way for community game creators to update their game without posting an updated version of their game and people downloading the updated version.

Why don't any of the community games have leaderboards?
Outside of online play, XNA creators cannot send or receive information through their game. This means no leaderboards.

Edit:
Hey m3talst0rm, you are wrong about the "no leaderboards"... well kind of wrong.

My game (Biology Battle) has fully functional leaderboards, for XBox Live Gold members at least (sorry silver members, msft wont let me give them to you).

Now for the obvious question: "WTF, msft said no leaderboards!!! how does Biology BAttle do it?!?"

Well I'm a developer, so I wrote a gurrilla solution. My leaderboard is all done via P2P networking. When you get a highscore, it connects to all available players and sync's the topscore data. I leave my xbox running as a psudo-server, to make sure that everyone who plays can sync up with at least one xbox (that has a full record of the topscores)

Kind of unfortunate, but msft made me rename the "Leaderboard" to be "Global Topscore list" under threat of delisting my game.. and same thing with achievements (renamed to Trophies... i guess sony will sue me now)

it was mine as well!. Last year when they released the demos during E3 i believe my 360 had just RROD so i missed that.. of course my 360 is about to die again, but at least I get to try some xna games before it completely craps out on me.

I'm trying to play Weapon of Choice and it's telling me that my parent should check my profile and make sure I'm not restricted.

I called my mom and she got scared cause she had no idea what I was talking about.

j.k...how do I fix this? I couldn't find a profile setting for it.

If you could possibly find a link for the games or some sort of short description for each one, that would be fantastic.

Excellent work, OP. Looking forward to these as well.

A few of the community games mention having achievements, but are they real ones or just in-game ones that don't add to your gamerscore?

I really dig Blow. Its a simple puzzle game where you place fans around the game board so it blows bubbles through gates while missing obstacles. I think its worth the 400 points

Also, I don't dig the fact that there are quite a few charging 800 points out of the gate. They suck but I hope this isn't a sign to come with more and more people trying to charge $10 for their game

On the xna site, in the faqs, it says: Can I give out Achievements and Gamerscore in my community-created title? No. Achievements are reserved for commercial games.

So, I would assume that the mentioned achievements are just in-game ones that do not affect your gamerscore.

Awesome! Thanks a ton.

Not trying to knock on the devs for these games, but of the 8 or so games I played, I felt like I could have played very similar flash games for free.

Blow sounds fun....I'm going to download the demo and see if I can get into it.

I only see two titles that cost the 800 points. Now, from what I understand, there were more titles up for those in the nxe preview but some have been taken down (I could be completely wrong about that.) Is that the case or were those two 800 point games so horrible for you that it seemed like quite a few ;)

From the previews I have played the price points seem reasonable...but I haven't tried the 800 point games yet.

Just me thinking a couple of games being more expensive than they really are....I'm looking at you Weapon Of Choice and In The Pit
Loot, Steal, Destroy looks fun. Has anyone given it a shot?
I downloaded the trial, but it said I needed two players to play and I didn't see any option to use someone from live. I deleted it.

I've had some fun with bloc. I'll probably purchase it (only 200 points). You control a circle that is divided into four quadrants: yellow, red, green, and blue. You move this circle around and try to shoot blocks that are crossing the screen. The challenge is that the blocks are the same color as the quadrants and you must shoot the block with its color to destroy it. If you run into a block you loose a quadrant. You can gain powerups....one will allow you to destroy any block no matter the quadrant you shoot it with (kind of a super star). Pretty fun IMO.

out of what was released yesterday, these are the ones I'm digging

Artoon
Being
Biology Battle
Blow
Colosseum
DOUtrix
Endless Swarm
Galax-E-Mail
Lines
Pokerball

I had fun with the little time I had with the demos of Blow, Weapon of Choice, DOUtrix, Smashell and Galax-e-mail. I'm gonna get the 200 point titles in that list for sure. I'm not digging the fact that you have to be online to play community games, If I purchase a game I want to beable to take my system to a friends house and play these games without worrying about a internet connection.

10 games added to the community games marketplace.

I'm the dev of Biology Battle, you guys should check it out if you are a fan of shmups or want a party game (there are 12 multiplayer games in it)

the demo restrictions msft puts on me are pretty lame tho (they force 4 minute demos on all CG developers). But I hope you can get a feel for the game after a few tries. i'm sure you'll find it worth while.

Hi, I'm the developer of Snake360. I actually announced it here a few weeks back.

The trial mode of the game currently crashes when the 4-minute time limit expires. The full version is unaffected. We were unable to test the "time expired" screen because it doesn't show up outside of the final, published version! =\

I have already submitted a revised version that should hopefully fix the problem, but it won't be up until at least Sunday. I just wanted to inform as many people as possible.

Please enjoy Snake360...I really think it's one of the best experiences on Community Games!

I bought Lines. Awesome little puzzle game though the way that the leaderboards is handled sucks. They give you a code that you have to enter at their site (can community games have actual leaderboards through Live?).

Check out the FAQs in the 1st post;)

Short answer: No leaderboards for community games...in fact I read the lines' leaderboards are as good as they get.

Something else that sucks: You have to be online for these games to play.

Hey, I'm one of the developers of Audiball. It can be played with a guitar controller, but a regular Xbox controller works just as well. Please check out the trial and let me know what you think!

Anyway, I think it's OK, i understand their marketing point of view.

My big problem with the community games is the restrictive 4 minute trial msft forces all us developers to have. I wrote Biology Battle to have a richly featured, fun 15 minute trial experience. How the hell am I going to convince people my game is worth 800 points (the highest price of all the community games mind you), if I only have 4 minutes total before the player gets booted to the dashboard... it's a tough sell in 4 minutes. So far, I havent heard anyone say "Biology Battle isnt worth the price!" but I have heard people say "I'm not sure, is Biology Battle worth the price?"

Anyway, I know I rant, but this game cost me quite a bit to write (100k USD over 1 year), so I need to be able to recoup my costs if i want to keep writing games... and I admit I'm a bit paniced about the trial mode restriction

So it's been several days now.... What are the good games to check out? I downloaded snake because I remembered someone here made it. Haven't tried it yet though.. Will check out a few more posted here but yea i'm lazy and it takes me forever to check out a "normal" demo usually unless it's something i'm already looking forward to.

novaleaf, I really dig your game. I'll be picking it up sometime soon. Its pretty much like what I was hoping at least one mode in Geometry Wars 2 would be.

I do have a question and you don't have to give specific numbers but since it is one of the 800 point games, I'm curious if you could kill my cat by telling me on how well its been selling?

Thanks for the info and the opinion on the 4 minute trials which I totally agree btw. I hope you keep posting and let us know about your progress with recouping your costs.

Great idea and there seems to be a decent amount of them up. Is there any site that has reviews of them?
So far Word Soup is my favorite out of the three I've tried.

We have a thread started here that has some opinion in it, a list of all the games released with links to descriptions of each (check the op), FAQs, a "Games by CAGs" section, and links to several interesting sites.

But to answer your question: I would check out

it's doing "OK", i'll probably end up recouping my costs after about 1 year. At least, that's my assumption. The leaderboards showed about 100 people purchasing the game over the first 4 days, and since those are gold members only, i'd estimate that to be about 400 or 500 people total.

Though that's just my estimations. Microsoft hasnt given out real sales info, and I don't think they will any time soon....

couple of new games up

Zombie Smashers X4 Guitarpocalypse (400 points)
This game was classified by the community with the following category scores - Violence=2/3, Sex=0/3, Mature Content=1/3. Batter your enemies senseless with Rock Fu and Guitarpocalyptic Power Chords in this quick to pick up, nasty to master arena brawler. The most tenacious will prevail in this apocalyptic brawl between ninjas, zombies, pirates, cyborgs, and punks!

Memo Stomp (400 points)
This game was classified by the community with the following category scores - Violence=0/3, Sex=0/3, Mature Content=0/3. Fun party game based on the classic card game. Great for a dance pad, but fun to play on a standard controller too!
How much do you get each time someone buys your game?
that's a good question chronotrigga, it's supposed to be 70%, however there's a big asterik next to that.

First, microsoft might (at their discression) take up to 40% more for doing "additional marketing" for the game. It's not disclosed what they might do, but they disclose that they can and will take additional cuts.

Also, it seems that we will not get sales or download information any time soon (ever?). It's also going around that our first checks will be sent sometime in the april 2009 timeframe. so quite a long wait.

That said, i think the base 70% is good, great actually. I spent a lot (100k) on the game and need to recoup some of the costs to make sure I can continue writing games. So I'm happy with the arangement, even though no download statistics is quite a bumber.
Added 4 titles:
*Aaron's Ping-Pong (Classics) Price: 200 Microsoft Points (11/24)
*MemoStomp (Famiky) Price: 400 Microsoft Points (11/24)
*Oh Snap (Puzzle & Trivia) Price: 200 Microsoft Points (11/24)
*ZSX4 Guitarpocalypse (Fighting) Price: 200 Microsoft Points (11/24)
Though for the most part they are crap, there is also some really good games on the service

The only games I've kept the demos for right now:

Being - Simple platformer that I think doesn't erase your progress after being booted due to the timer.
Biology Battle - Probably the most worthy of being bumped up to XBLA status so MS can't threaten its use of leaderboards and achievements.
Bloc - A fun, unique puzzle/shooter.
Fruit Attack - Simple puzzle game
Galax-e-mail - Interesting dual-stick shooter
Lines - Interesting Lumines-style puzzle game.
sin(Surfing) - Not enough to this for a purchase
Snake360 - Decent snake clone.
Word Soup - Fun, flash-style word game
WTF happened to all the good games from the community trial thing they had awhile back? I want Dishwasher Samurai, Jellycar, etc.
Dishwasher Samurai was bumped up to Arcade status so it is getting a full release.

According to this site it is the same people that done the dishwasher. It seems like a smash bros. clone. And for 2.50 I'm gonna buy it, if I like the demo. Watch the video here.

Edit: Also the music is great.

I also added *Pastry Wars (Shooter) Price: 200 Microsoft Points (11/24) to the op list as well as the links above.
the pong clone was already up, but added the others. Thanks!
didn't see it on the list. They sure are putting up quite a few games.

Bought Biology Battle. I think it is worth the money. And though in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't make much difference but the bottom left corner where it tells you your global rank and how many more points you need to move up is one awesome little feature (and I have the feeling that wasn't the easiest thing to write)
