Battle of the Smash Forums: CAG vs Smogon

strellpokemansji4.gif

Hello Smash Veterans!

Over a month ago Zerowing and I discussed about a new tournament idea. This time, CAGs will not be dueling with one another but against another forum! Who is it you ask? A Pokemon site called Smogon.

Now you're probably wondering: "What chance does a Pokemon site have against cheapasses who play the same game to death for over 8 months?" Well, they have also completed 3 tournaments and have already compiled a list of their Top 15 Smashers. So don't be fooled folks. We will need CAG's best to show them our Pokemanz.

HOW WILL THIS WORK?
  • First, we open enrollment to all CAGs
  • Next, we discuss about our Top 16 through words, fighting, and then lovemaking
  • Lastly, we show them our Pokemanz

GENERAL RULES
  • Once we select our Top 16, matchups will be determined by ranking: #1 vs. #1, #2 vs. #2, etc.
  • Games are to be played as Singles - one-on-one
  • Each player begins every round with three stocks.
  • Sets consist of three rounds - winner of two rounds wins the set.
  • No items allowed.
  • The first stage will be a random or agreed neutral. Then, each forum player will get to choose their stage based on their ranking. The second stage will be chosen by Even-Ranking CAGs (#2, 4, 6, ...) and the third stage will be chosen by Odd-Ranking CAGs (#1, 3, 5, ...). Here are the neutrals
    • Battlefield
    • Smashville
    • Final Destination
    • Yoshi's Island
    • Lylat Cruise
    and the counterpicks
    • Castle Siege
    • Delfino Plaza
    • Distant Planet
    • Frigate Orpheon
    • Halberd
    • Luigi's Mansion
    • Mario Circuit
    • Norfair
    • Pirate Ship
    • Brinstar
    • Corneria
    • Green Greens
    • Jungle Japes
    • Onett
    • Pokemon Stadium
    • Rainbow Cruise
    • Yoshi's Island (Melee)
  • Any stage not mentioned is banned.
  • Communication with our opponents will be done via AIM or e-mail.

DETERMINING THE FORUM WINNER
  • Each matchup will be worth a certain amount of points depending on level of stakes: #1 winner = 16 pts, #2 winner = 15 pts, etc.
  • Points will be summed and a 69-point majority is needed for victory (136 total)

Last but not least, we really need all the CAG Smash veterans to come together and join up once more if we intend to win this tournament. For those worried about commitment, this will only be one game long. And even if you don't make the cut, you will surely contribute by helping the Top 16 with practice sessions before their big match. Besides, do we really want us to lose to a Pokemon site? How embarassing would that be?!

Psh, just send me, Blue, Goo, Suko, Joe, and Arikado, and they'll go crying to Professor Oak.

But it's actually Strell dressed like Oak, so we get that bonus as well.

If we can already see their top 15, sounds like you could maybe bump one of ours a rung up or down if it would put the character matchup in our favor.

Theoretically of course, we would never do something so ghastly.

Zerowing and I agreed to a double blindside. Neither his players nor our players know each other's mains. We do have the advantage though: we all know who Zerowing mains in. ;)

Dudes, Lylat Cruise is not a neutral. It screws over the three space animals (ironically enough) and Ike. Majorly.

That said, this looks to be fun.

I dont know about this whole point system thing, but I believe crew battles normally just have some sort of stock system. When 2 start, the winner gets to keep going until someone takes all their mans. Arikado can explain it.

I'd like to see a traditional crew system used for this, but it would take forever to get people matched and games played. Whereas with this system, one person plays another person, and their commitment ends there.

Then again, this current system is a lot more susceptible to stacking. So, I don't know.

If this is only for one game, I am probably interested; although I need to get some practice in since I haven't played Smash in a little while.

On the plus side, it should be fairly easy to pick the top 15 considering we did just finish a long smash season season and have a somewhat accurate ranking of players given the polling system + season finale.

Why No Crew Battles?: Because we wanted to make communication and participation as easy as possible for both forums. Plus, I don't wanna host something long and time-consuming. I'm still recovering from hosting the last tourney. :whistle2:(

Stacking: What does that mean? Anyways, we implemented a unique points system so that both forums would send their very best to fight. That means no tricks like #1 vs. #15.

Our Top 15: I would love to discuss this via AIM or here because I don't think the Smash Polls from the last tourney were completely accurate. Some of the rankings need to be tweaked and we're missing FallMoon and some others. At the same time, it is a great starting point.

5th Tourney: I have a new, refreshing, and fun idea for a 5th Tourney but don't wanna host it. If someone is interested, shoot me a PM and I will explain. I don't mind doing the unique brackets for this idea as well as updating it. It involves triangles. :D

Stacking means shifting the match-ups so that one side has an inherent advantage. Imagine if the Smogon team placed four of their worst players at the top. Those four players would likely lose to our best, but the remaining eleven players would have a noticeable advantage because they'd be playing lesser-skilled opponents.

But, after looking at the Smogon thread for this tournament, and seeing that they've already selected, stacking isn't really going to be an issue.
Unless we do it.
Just kidding.
Or am I?
Harry Potter.
Confused?
Good.
Dunno if I make the Top 15 CAG Smashers, but if I do, I'm in.
Thanks for posting Rig. Now if only you can persuade FallMoon to come back one more time. I know she's posting in the AC thread.

For those hesitant on whether or not they will make the cut, make sure to post anyways. I don't think all Top 15 will be returning.

Keeping in mind that I haven't played online ever, and thus would be totally lagfucked - if you're desperate for people, I'll join in.
So when is this happening? Sounds fun.
I predict mid-December and matches should be done before 2009? And are you joining Z?

We need to practice after we assemble our cast. They've already assembled and are probably practicing with their Magikarps. We just need to dust off our Mewtwos. ;)

Time to hit the sandbags, how the heck do you counter Pikachu's lighting bolt? We're fighting against a pokemon website so we should know all about pokemon counter moves.

I will definitely try to be in the top 15!

Edit: Hey Arikado, still undecided on what game you wanted for coming in 3rd?
The Raging Demon is back! We miss you FallMoon. :grouphug:

+1 for CAG. :bouncy:
More like, MISSED me. But thank you! This will be fun.

Blah. You said you were only into Wii Fit and Animal Crossing now. You're prolly an easy victory. :p

Olimar can Whistle through it, characters that can counter (Fire Emblem + Lucario) can get through it, and Fox & Wolf can Reflector through it. Falco...is hit or miss. Any other character, air-dodge when you hear "PIKA!"

We should try and get Riyonuk. He's also really good.

Everyone should refuse to participate until Goo makes this his avatar:

gooAwwwwYeahAva2.gif

THAT'S RIGHT. I COLORIZED IT UP FOR YOU, WHINER.

Signups will close on Sunday.

Regarding the "too soon" tag: Zerowing kind of persuaded me into it since he said his forum has already assembled and are waiting for us. I am still somewhat tired from the last tourney so I feel your pain.

Nope, I won't take it. :nottalking:

That avatar needs more frames because I look like a robot now. Plus, my hair looks awkward now since there are two shades of black. Throw in a few more frames and better coloring and I'll accept it. If I'm going to embarrass myself, I need to be at least presentable. :p

I can't add any more frames without going over the limit, or removing color.

I hope no one participates now.

I could try slowing it down, but I'm not so sure you're worth this kind of trouble.

I'd throw my hat in the ring for this tourney but there are too many better Smash players to represent CAG. Please try to record all the matches you can - I'd like to witness the destruction of Smogon!

If Yukine is brave enough to sign up, then you should be too. Besides, playing us might help improve your game...or make you cry yourself to sleep.

Edit: Maigo, I pm'd it to him.
Well since I didn't win a game in the last tournament , clearly I'm qualified to represent CAG.
I offer my sandbag services too!

Would it be considered in bad taste if we all went to Smogon's forum and just talked mad trash? Because I'd totally be down for that.

I think we should be as quiet as possible. That way we have more time for training and waste less time taunting them.

So since my gimmic of using the CC/Snake at all costs led me to a stunning 1-7 season is there consensus as to what controller and what character is easiest to use and pickup?
