This weekend: STALKER for $4.99

In other news, Steam will sell EA games. Right now you can purchase Mass Effect, Spore, Need for Speed Underground, Warhammer Online, and FIFA Manager 09. Red Alert 3, Mirror's Edge, and Deadspace are coming soon.

Edit: According to a Steam forum mod, Spore will only use Steam's DRM. A Bioware dev told Blue's News that Mass Effect ($29.99) will only use Steam's built-in DRM; no third-party stuff like SecuROM.

Still don't know if EA's games will have SecuROM + install limits on top of Steam's (tolerable) DRM.
It will tell you if a game has third party DRM in the game details section. Only EA games that have it are the Crysis games.

@Sporadic

Yeah, but sometimes Valve is slow to update the 3rd party DRM section on the product description page.

In any case, I plan on buying all EA games through Steam if they're SecuROM and install limit free. Next paycheck it's Mass Effect :)

I can almost guarantee that they use the same DRM as the retail versions. I'm 99.9% sure.

Edit: According to a Steam forum mod, Spore will only use Steam's DRM. Hopefully the same will be true for Mass Effect, which is $29.99

That's claim was made by a volunteer mod, which means it's pretty much worthless. Volunteer mods primarily serve as mere forums janitors; they don't actually have any privileged or inside or authoritative info, and are not Valve employees or associates. That mod is basing that claim on the fact that the store listings for ME an Spore don't have the same .

But look at bottom of the store listings for Spore and Mass Effect:
"INTERNET CONNECTION, ONLINE AUTHENTICATION, END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY."

They still use SecuROM.

On a related note, EA just released a deauthentication tool for Spore, which means you can have infinite installs now, only limited to 5 machines at a time, but infinite installs over time.

I've never used STEAM before, does the service itself cost money or is it free to register and then you just pay for whatever games you want?

I am going thinking of trying out Sin and Crysis Warhead. I know about Crysis but as anyone tried out Sin yet? Is it worth $10.00 ? I also want them to update it to work with Battlefield 2 and 2142. I still have not picked up Northern Strike if Steam sells it I am definitely wait for it to be available.

Steam is free.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_(content_delivery)

You buy things from them, it is tied to your Steam account forever and you can redownload them whenever you want.

Steam is free to download and use. You only pay for the games you want.

A Bioware employee posted the following at BluesNews:

"Mass Effect on Steam only uses Steam, if you catch my drift."

Never thought I'd see EA selling SecuROM-free games over Steam.
So should I pick it up? Worth the $5?
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a huge deep FPS. If you're a fan of that genre it's a steal for $5.

yeah, been waiting on a steal for this - though the full retail version is anywhere from 10 to 15 at half price books here - only issue is my old computer which doesn't support the ridiculous requirements for this game :bomb:
I know about Crysis but as anyone tried out Sin yet? Is it worth $10.00 ?
Wouldn't really recommend buying Sin unless you're a fan of the original. Buying Sin Episodes is sort of a dead end, seeing as how they only finished the first chapter, and won't be making any more.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a very good game, even though I already have a retail copy I'm going to pick up the Steam edition for $5 so that I can download it on the go. It definitely takes some time to get used to (don't let the ridiculously difficult first battle discourage you), but it's one of the most interesting FPS games released as of late.

I'm surprised that EA finally gave in and released their games on Steam. They seemed so deadset on pushing their own proprietary store platform, it's almost comical to see them throw in the towel and use Steam now. Hopefully this will mean the end of EA Link/Downloader/whatever they're calling it now, although I hope the purchases of BF2 and 2142 booster packs I made on there will remain valid...

I have a retail copy and I really wanted to like this game. And it really is hard at the start. So hard I shelfed it after playing a bit. Its a FPS but you can't hit the side of a barn with the guns they give you. And sure enough the NPCs you are fighting all can hit you with no problems.

In a wide open world game your guns shouldn't so freaking inaccurate. It really turned me off. I might give it another try when I upgrade my PC. And honestly at this price I might consider getting the steam version so I can give away my disk version.

I really wanted to get to the end content that is supposidly very cool.

The expression is "...couldn't hit the inside of a barn." Just saying.

Why don't you make like a tree and get outta here?

Hmm. You know, that actually was one of the reasons I stopped playing it. I'm not big on realistic guns, although Fallout 3 kinda won me over on that recently. Is it equal parts FPS and exploration, or is it more of one than the other?
The expression is "...couldn't hit the inside of a barn." Just saying.
Actually, it's "Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn."

man the first battle waxed my backside they ain't going to con me and get my 5 dollars if i'm a play a fps i need ammo!!!! ...well 5 dollars just maybe

My comp is a little better than minimum requirements, so I got it.

Died about 5 min, first firefight. almost lost to 2 dogs chasing me, but I got them at least!

Anyone know how to improve framerate? Mine dips into negative numbers every now and then on minimum settings, there must be a mod to help performance.

Same since they have their own download service. Their sales must of taken a good hit in this recession.
How creepy is this game? I'm not a huge fan of crap-in-your-pants games/intense gore.

Yeah, I know, I suck.
Its not a scary game at all. If anything is going to actually cause you to get scared it would be mostly due to the atmosphere [ominous empty country] which is done outstandingly.

Kingdox is pretty much spot on though. Theres a few negatives to an otherwise superb game. Firstly its difficulty is up there mostly due to what i consider a crap/aged AI system where they zero in on you from a mile off and have no problem hitting you. Meanwhile for the first few hours of play your weapons are absolutely terrible. If you play on the higher difficulties be prepared to face enemies that will easily eat half a clip before they go down. If you want to enjoy the game i highly suggest doing so on the easiest difficulty otherwise you will be reloading for a good portion of the game.

The second main problem is quests. Unless you're a really hardcore RPG player i'd suggest simply concentrating on the main story. If you try to do the side missions chances are you'll just get aggravated. You'll run 40minutes in one direction to do a side mission only to trigger another which will require you to go in the opposite direction you just wasted all that time going through. The kicker is that you'll most likely fail one of the quests due to time constraints. So as i said, ignore them, stick with the primary mission goals.

Theres plenty of mods out there for the game as well. If you want to make your life easier use one of the weapon mods which makes higher end guns available much sooner on the numerous weapons brokers in the game.

Boondock Saints reference?
How creepy is this game?
It's not really a horror game. Most of it takes place in big outdoor areas anyways, with the occasional creepy building interior here and there.

More like Back to the Future quote. Biff says it to McFly.

And there were a few creepy moments, especially one in particular when you meet a bizarre enemy underground.

I bit on TF2 last week.

I've got a retail copy of this that I got from CC a while back, but I'm biting on this one too.

Maybe I can gift the boxed one... :)

I liked STALKER a lot.
My comp is underpowered but it played pretty well for me (2ghz Pentium 4, 1gb of mem, ATI 9800 PRO, XP). There are decent tweak guides out there to help you maximize performance. Also, you can hang back a bit in the first mission; just trigger the gunplay, and back out and wait.
The only thing I didn't like was the ridiculously difficult ending (I turned some cheats on to get through it).

This is a great game. For $5 you're crazy not to get it.
how would my computer handle this?
Intel C2D (2.0Ghz)
2gb DDR2 ram 667mhz
Nvidia Geforce go 7950GTX (512MB)
You'll be fine. If you can OC your proc you'll be even better.
Yahtzee claims it to be better than Bioshock and for 4.99 who the fuck am I not to try it?
Fears confirmed: there seems to be at least one person who takes that assclown's tripe seriously.
cool, does this run on vista 64?
Good idea asking that here. Because there's no way you could find that out using Google.
Boondock Saints reference?

What the hell kinda world do we live in where people don't remember one of the greatest movies of all time, yet know the movie that rips it off. sighhhhh.

Anyway, would be down for it if I had a good comp.
