Official 2009 Yard Sale Thread

Its still relatively early/cold in some states. But I'll keep track this year, since I'll probably be hitting garage sales for infant clothing, 2nd child due in late Summer/early Fall. And hopefully the occasional non, clothing deal.

Congrats on the kid!

Yea, some states are crappy right now, but I'm in Southern California. :D

Thanks.

Yeah, Indiana specifically sucks. Sales won't start here for atleast another 2 months. But thats all good, gives me time to save and have my taxes as well.

Would this be where people would talk about Thrift Shop buys? I got lucky today. I'll copy and paste what I posted on another forum.

"Lookie what I found at my local Salvation Army today. 30 Boxed GBA Shrek the Third for $2.99 each. (the rest are behind the Spiderman things on the bottom) ! I went home and checked the ebay prices, saw that they are getting $7.50 on up and promptly returned to buy them all. It's easy money! (as soon as the shipping boxes I ordered online arrives in that is). Of course it'll take all year listing 1 box a week, but I'm patient. !"

Photo can be found in this thread.

Also check your local freecycle group if you have one, children's clothing swapping is huge here. You might be able to get some clothing for nothing or trade with someone for some item you don't need thats in your house.

I am in NY so its not going to be starting until April/May here.

I won't have garage sales except some crappy estate sales until at least april or may considering im from new york.

About two weeks ago scored two s-type original x-box controllers and a duke (large and in charge) original x-box controller for 3 bucks. The cool thing was the guy had others cables and junk on the bottom and beneath that was a Best Buy Giftcard. I asked about the giftcard and he said "take it, probably empty". So after yardsaling, called the number on the back of the GC and low and behold $15 was still on it. Used the GC today with no problems. Try my luck on sat here in AZ.

Glad to see that the 2009 is up! Thanks Kuros!

I am hoping to do well this year but I'll have to wait until aprilish before anyone will start having sales. However, the local thrift and pawn shops seem to be getting treasures in.

I picked up:

Sonic Boom Soundtrack
Killer Instinct Killer Kuts CD
Nights (Saturn)
Paperboy (NES)
Legend of Dragoon (Non-GH, Disc 3 & 4)

No real story but picked it all up for $8.50

Also on a side note, did anyone else take advantage of the blockbuster buy 1 get one sale?

Went out yard saling and got some good stuff:

Star Wars Episode I: Obi Wan's Adventures (GBC, cart only) - 50 cents

SNES (yellowed, loose) - $1

NES controllers x2 - $2

Bioshock (PC, complete) - $2

Primus - Pork Soda
The Killers - Sam's Town
Gorillaz (self titled)
Rage Against The Machine (self titled)
Anti-Flag - Die For The Government
Ramones - Acid Eaters
Korn - All Mixed Up
Rolling Stones - Love is Strong
Mickey Avalon
Rage Against The Machine - The Battle of Los Angeles
Rob Zombie - The Sinister Urge
Tool - Aenima
The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan

Stuff for the week:

DDR Universe x2 - $20
Platipus x6 - $6
Gripshift - $5
World Series of Poker 2008 - $4
Scurge Hive x3 - $3
Picross DS - $5
Mercury Meltdown Revolution - $1
Kelly Slater Pro Surfer - $1
Dragon Warrior 2, Wizardry and 110-1 bootleg cart - $10
WDL Thunder Tanks, Animorphs and Monster Rancher GB - $2.50
SNES/N64/GCN av cable - $1
PS2 slim AC adapter - $2

Hmmm...I had forgot about this...then again, I've been a bit busy (won't bore with the details).

Late 2008 I hit a few deals:
- SNES in box (just missing power plug which I had extra at home) for $4. It was in great shape, no yellow too.
- Ran across a few NES carts and a PS1 RPG (final fantasy 4 and 5 collector 1st print i think). Traded that stuff at a local store and picked up a few things I wanted (like a chrome Interact dreamcast joystick).
- Picked up a GameCube for $10 with 2 controllers and 1 game. Everything worked, gave it to the boys and been picking up stuff at GS B2G1 Free sales. They flipped out at Christmas when they saw the games they got.
- Some decent deals here and there at 1/2 price books (especially when they have their 20% off sales).

*BTW: if you ever get a chance, you should pick up a copy of From Sun Tzu to XBOX: War and Video Games by Ed Halter. I picked it up at 1/2 price one day for a $1 and it's one of the best video game books I've read in terms of the overall history of gaming (pre video game...gasp) and computing and how the two came together...think miliarty simulations...(as well as how video game retuned the favor to be used by military).

Let's see...2009 has been a bit slow, but not bad...
- Snagged an ebay auction for an XBOX, 9 games 4 controllers (2 wireless) and 2 sets of monster cables for $5 + $15 shipping. Noone else bid on it cuz the auction was from someone who had a "0" feedback (brand new). I took a gamble and it paid off. Halo and Halo 2 were 2 of the games, nothing else worth much other than that.

Can't think of anything else at the moment...

Was that all from a yard sale...or pillaging a Sears? ;)
Was that all from a yard sale...or pillaging a Sears? ;)
Sears, however I've always posted all of my finds in the Yard Sale thread.

I find that the multitude of threads for finds is a bit redundant. Plus I already post my finds at 3 forums. No point in posting them in 2-3 other threads at the same forum.

This year at yard sales I'm going to look more at the VHS movies and hopefully build a collection. No sales until probably April though.
This year at yard sales I'm going to look more at the VHS movies and hopefully build a collection. No sales until probably April though.
I did that last year and plan to continue this year. My entire family consists of a bunch of Disney fanatics. So, when we first started going to garage sales, I eyed up some Disney VHS movies and since then I think I've doubled my collection. And our collection was quite big to begin with.. Most garage sales had the older "Classics" Collection movies which were ones that I didn't have.

Anyway! I'm glad to hear about your potential VHS collection.

Also, DO NOT pay more than $1 a tape (complete with case). Over the course of last year, we saw the cheapest tapes being 10 cents (cases were a bit beat up but you can change the cases out) and ranging up to $1. We even got some Disney preview tapes (usually sent to retailers and what not) for $1 each (DuckTales Movie and White Fang)

My two finds of the year last year were:

Final Fantasy 7 Greatest Hit COMPLETE - $.75

and

2x Atari 2600's with a boatload of controllers and about 50 games - $8

Thanks! I'm actually also looking for Disney movies, since I haven't seen most of the popular animated ones (Aladdin and stuff like that). I think I'll start out offering 50 cents and gradually offer less as I get more comfortable. Thanks for the advice.

no problem! Yea, definitely start at .50 and if they won't budge shoot for .75 (wait, I don't need to tell you how to "garage-sale") lol.

anyway, maybe I'll post some pictures later. my throat hurts like crazy so I'm off to rest for now!
Also, DO NOT pay more than $1 a tape (complete with case).
I saw a sale last year that was asking 2 may 3 dollars a VHS tape, I was thinking it was a joke and that they would lucky as hell to sell even a handful of VHS tapes at that price. IMO if you can sell VHS tapes for a buck at a yardsale your doing better then expected! The flea market I frequent has a seller that has tons of VHS tapes, probably somewhere north of 1,000 and they sell them at 2 for a buck.

Yeah, 1$ a tape is borderline too much, people can't get rid of them for 25 cents each here. Last year I sold quite a few though by doing 25 cents or 5 for a dollar, so thats a good price point. If its more than 1$ a tape and they won't budge I would walk, unless its something unbelievely rare. If theres a lot of VHS you want and they aren't budging consider swinging by their house the next day or when the sale is over and check the trash!

I have about a hundred tapes here (commercial release), I had to give away all my blanks, just no room to keep them, probably had 300 blanks too. I don't feel too bad about it though because most of the ones I was using for taping TV shows were bought at a yard sale for 5$ for 2 a big bags several years ago. Considering I got my entertainments use out of them I don't feel bad about it.

Yeah don't pay much for VHS tapes at all, but if you find a rare VHS (there's tons of them) don't be afraid to pay more than that.

OK, had some junk to get rid of and ran by 1/2 Price Books. I picked up UFC Tapout 2 (yeah, yeah, I know...but it's at least worth more than $1...slightly...lol)....and Urban Chaos: Riot Response (had a bit of fun playing it when i rented it once and figured what the heck, it was cheap). At GS Riot Response sells for $15 and UFC2 for $18. So, I paid just $3.50 (plus my trade in) for the 2 games.

Ran by a Goodwill on the way home and picked up a GameCube controller for $5 (boys been beggin me to pick another one up so I can play games with em). Seeing as they are $15 at GS, not a bad deal all in all.

OK, someone else's turn now...

Is there a list of rare tapes I should be looking for? I know Song of the South is pretty rare.
Is there a list of rare tapes I should be looking for? I know Song of the South is pretty rare.
uhh song of the south is rare as HELL. I believe they only released it in Europe? and then some groups reproduced it and sell it on dvd on ebay or something (unofficially of course!).

rare tapes... hmm.. well theres the version of The Little Mermaid with the penis on the cover (google it to see the recalled cover). I believe there was a recalled version of the Rescuers Masterpiece collection version. I dunno, I'd say just pick up at least 1 version of anything you find. I didn't see The Nightmare Before Christmas all that often so I picked up one of them (doesn't have "Walt Disney" anywhere on the cover, but I think that's normal :p), uhm, I really don't know. But most of the "Classics" collection movies are pretty rare. Hopefully someone can give us a list because I would like to know as well.

But thats my input for ya! :)

Ran by the pawn shop the other day and they had a metric crapton (yeah, it's a real measurement few people are aware of) of those Disney tapes your talking about. They were $1 each too I beleive. I didn't pick any up since I don't have a VCR anymore but I did pick up a couple uncommon games.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (PS)
Command and Conquer (N64)

They were marked $5 each but I was pretty broke and all I had on me was only $6. Luckily, I caught her in a 'good mood' so she let me have them for that.

Bust a Move 99, Megaman x4, MSH vs SF, SF Alpha 3 and G Darius - $5
My Word Coach DS - $1
LoZ: OoT (gold), E-reader - $4.20

couple months ago, I got on VHS, awesome condition boxed set of the first 6 star trek movies!!!! 5 bucks. They even have little promos and coupons inside the sleeves...I guess that was a nice deal. Here in NJ its way too cold for yardsales, and we have one lame thrift shop that never puts anything new out, even though they have a back room FULL of stuff. Their friends get to pick through first.

Actually they DO have a 3 DO with 5 games for 100 dollars. A friend told me it's a rare version of the 3DO which is the reason for such a high price.

I know the rest of the country is going through a ridiculous freeze right now, but let me tell you, the weather in SoCal has been UNREAL. I'm talking 80 degrees in LA, high 70's at the beaches, clean and clear skies, light breeze at most.

Went to a couple of sales I came across today as I was doing some business work, nothing at the first but found Pikmin 2, complete and near mint at the second one. Guy wanted $10 for the game, I CiF'ed him $3 and he took it, I told him it was all I had and to take it or leave it. It actually helped that it was the only game he had left - he told me he just sold the Gamecube along with all his other games (3 or 4, but nothing of note except for Windwaker) but the person didn't take Pikmin 2. His loss, LOL.

It's going on the trade list as soon as I test it. Oh it's Player's Choice, but only the outer case indicates that, not the disc or the instructions.

I thought my swap meet finds today were good but they got better:

Congrats on the TG16 find. Bonk 3 is a pretty rare game if I recall. It sells for over $100 on eStarland's website.

Amazing Turbo Deal, that is one of the best finds I've ever seen on this site, the combo of rarity, uniqueness, and price is great.

I found a JVC E'eye with 2 cart only games (world of illusion, Super Hydlide), 1 disc only game (Power Rangers) and 2 controllers, no wires for $6. I've never seen one of these before, the Genesis Slot works fine, the CD needs to be fixed. This was at the same flea market as I found the Amiga CD32 last week, and this dealer was set up right next to the guy I got the CD32 from. Maybe next time Ill go Ill find a Neo Geo or a CDX:)

how do you guys locate your garage sales?

do you just look for signs posted around town and such?

or

is there a site you use?

I used a site all last year for these and it was good, but they changed the whole format of it now and its not all too great. (it's a local newspaper website)
I used a site all last year for these and it was good, but they changed the whole format of it now and its not all too great. (it's a local newspaper website)
That's weird, that also happened to my local newspaper's website. But now I use a combination of craigslist.com and signs around town.

Bingo! And check out Liz and Dom (EvilMax and Moeity)'s blog/website for tips. The truly hardcore yardsale adventurers will map and plan out their route from sale to sale, along with being flexible enough to change up the plan if they encounter an unknown/unadvertised sale.

But with craigslist ads, you have to watch for a TON of competition, especially if video games, toys, collectibles etc. are listed in the ad. You either need to get to the sellers before the sale, either via email contact, or be an early bird even if they say "no early birds".

Despite the huge amounts of competition here in LA, there is one damn good thing about the size of city - there are tons and tons of sales almost every weekend, in every corner of the southland.

Speaking of Liz and Dom, after they moved, I haven't heard much (read:anything) from them in a while. Anyone know what's been going on, are they still into 'sailing? They are the reason I keep going out. They find awesome deals all the time!

I'm patiently waiting for yard sales to start in my town in Central, PA. I've had amazing luck since moving here in '05. Here's the big ones...

Summer of '06: Convinced my dad to buy a box with a 64, SNES, and Genesis (2nd gen) systems in it for $10. It had two games both 64... a Pokemon (Arena... Colliseum?) and Rugrats. Two Genesis controllers, an SNES controller (sadly no 64's) and an RF switch for the SNES. I took the Genesis stuff and bought the power/av cables.

Summer of '07: Blue GBA first ed. for $10 with Dungeons & Dragons for $5.

Later that day, I got an NES w/ a lot of extras for $5. Mint condition, owned by a trucker who had no kids. Had close to 10 games with it including SMB/Duck Hunt, SMB3 and a Zapper which looks like it was never used. Also, two contollers, two of those big joystick controllers and all the cords.

X-Box: Mountain Dew edition. It was $20 with 7 games (a COD, which I misplaced, and no case as it was in the system... Flatout and 5 football games). All the cables, but sadly no controllers. Luckily, my friend gave me the two back I gave to him that I got the previous summer for $2 each... a duke and a green S.) Same dude had a white GBA for $10 with an obscure game in it, but I only had $20 to spare on me... which I was surprised he took for the X-Box as he had no price on it.

Summer of '08: Streets of Rage 3 in the box w/ manual and Super Punch-Out (cart. only) for $5. They were sitting in a box full of crappy PSOne titles for $5. I was really happy they cut me a deal of $5 for both, as I figured they'd want at least $10 if not knowing the value of the two, esp. SoR3. (They were selling cheap dollar store stuff like two rubber door wedges for $2-$3)

Another 2nd ed. Genesis that came with Sonic 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles (carts only), Ren & Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention and Whac-a-Critter... cables and controllers. $5 for the box. I gave the Genesis and Sonic 2 (I already had it) to my bro. His ex-gf ended up with his Genesis that had no cables after they broke up.

Donkey Kong Country and The Pagemaster for $1 each for the SNES. This year's the first I've found SNES games for sale.

A bunch of other Genesis games over the years, usually $1... sometimes 50 cents.

Sharp VCR for $4 w/ factory remote and manual. I gave it to my nephews who have apparently been slowly killing it. (The picture was great when I got around to testing it out. When I was at my gram's, it wasn't playing all their tapes.)
