Long story short: Our household watches CBS a lot. Dish Network gets into a tiff with Fisher Communications who owns the local CBS affiliate. So we lose are CBS back in December. Now we're missing CSI, The Mentalist (which doesn't stream on CBS.com, and no, we don't do file-sharing programs to download it), Survivor (my namesake) and the Amazing Race. We're pissed. We're angry. A neighbor missed his football season and responded by ripping his dish off his roof and running it over with his truck.

I send an e-mail asking Dish if they're going to work this shit out or if we should seek other orbital television outlets. They send back a hugely snotty e-mail accusing us of not supporting them in their hour of crisis and that they're doing this for us to keep our costs down... nevermind that Dish Network already charges $5 a month for the local channels, something DirectTV doesn't do.... and that we would be contacted by agents about our desire to cancel and discuss the fees that come with it. Smooth.

We just ordered DirectTV. I'm sure there will be people on here saying "Wow, you made a huge mistake, they SUCK!" There always is... but man, it feels really good to be away from those twatwaffles at Dish Network. Charter Communications sucks but they never accused us of not supporting them.

I don't think there's ANY cable service that is good. I sympathizes even though I'm on Dish although I don't get the local stations. Speaking of which... can't you just use your tuner to get the local stations? We've been having times where we'll be watching something at it freezes for a moment but the sound continues then the video catches up. It's fucking irritating and probably because of the "digital revolution" because it never did it before...

Using tuners was good in the old days, but HDTVs are not so friendly for that stuff. Plus the way they wired our house when Dish came in and butchered everything, we kind of had our backs to the wall.

Some of the shows you can stream off of CBS.com, but otherwise we've been having neighbors who watch shows like the Mentalist record them for us.

It's really a shame because we had no problem with Dish Network up to this point. But to have something like this to go down and then basically blame the customers is absolutely outrageous. And apparently according to some local news reports they are 100% lying about why this situation happened to begin with (Dish claims Fisher wanted an 84% increase on their service fee. Fisher says there was no increase, Dish demanded an 84% reduction, and the news uncovered this to be true... regardless of the price drop, Dish was still going to charge customers for the locals, something no other cable or satellite provider does).
"twatwaffle"? -Really?
I... I.... I am at a loss for words.....

.... twatwaffle ..... WOW!
It's a mighty powerful word. Twatwaffle. Say it out loud. Sounds hilarious and hurtful at the same time.

But then you disgrace the word waffle, which is in itself goodness. I prefer douchenozzle (as douches don't come in bags, I never got that).

Anyway, my family had Dish a couple years ago and they were okay for $20 a month, but 1) all it took was a cloudy day for the signal to die (Direct doesn't seem to have that problem, afais) 2) they lied to us about 50% of the channels we'd be getting. They told us we'd have something like 100 channels, only when when we scrolled through them, we had 20 bullshit 'inspirational' channels, 15 shopping channels (THE GUN/KNIFE SHOW 24H A DAY WTF), and a bunch of university/documentary channels. We did however get local channels for free, but we got two sets of them.

Direct's been pretty good, and we have a recorder now, it works with our HDTV, and we actually have a lot of channels, instead of a handful of channels and 40-50 channels of garbage filler they found.

When I lived in Orlando, Bright House wasn't all that bad, but they had the same filler channel problem.

Speaking of, did that Viacom thing ever get worked out for the Cox and TimeWarner people?

No TV provider is saintly but some affiliates are devilish too. The CBS station here doesn't have their HD channel on either sat provider, you're stuck with OTA, Time Warner, or Uverse.

The Fox station in Green Bay recently held providers hostage for more money too. Lucky a war didn't break out in Packerland.

Douchenozzle isn't bad... if you want to be totally random use "Bungalospank." It's kind of nonsensical and yet I would be offended if someone called me it.

It's the network and not Dish.

We had the same issue with NBC 22 News, wwlp.com, read their shit, it's written by children.

Anyways 2-3 times in the last 6 months they wanted more money and they were almost taken off Charter, Comcast, Verison...

So it's most likely a shit network and not the Dish people's fault.

Fortunately, I've never had any of those issues with Directv here in Colorado. DTV has always been great to me, even if you toss out the freebies they toss my way every 6-8 months when I "consider moving my service to Comcast.";)

Now that you've started with DirecTV, I have one word of advice - be sure to schedule some kind of service appointment every 89 days. I recently discovered that unless you've had a service call within the past 90 days, it will cost $75 for a technician to come out and fix any problems with your DirecTV. Alternatively, you can pay $7 a month for their "protection plan". But if you've had a service call within the past 90 days, the new service call will be free of charge.

On one hand, I like DirecTV's actual programming better than Dish. But their customer service completely blows.

From the thread about how to make your own HD antenna, it seems they do good with antennas? Plus the one guy on there built one that picks up 40+ channels?

Went Dish and then renewed with Dish.. For what we watch they were better....

I sure hop eyou opted for the DVR service for that extra $5 a month.

Also maybe you can get out of the contract considering they are not prociding you with a station you had signed up with... thus avoiding late fees.

plus cinemax for .01 a year is the shit.

freakin dish pulled abc here near richmond (but got it back up a couple of days later), one thing i notice with dish, they dont care if they are in a squable with the local networks, at least direct dont pull the stations off the air as much as dish does, dude my contract be up in march, im going direct with 2 extra dvrs, those things rock!

They sent you an email chiding you for your lack of support? Really!?!?

Shame on you for not having an emotional attachment or position of solidarity for your paid television provider.

FOR SHAME!

I would post the whole e-mail but eh, the bottom line is they said they are disappointed in the reaction they are getting from their customers because, afterall, they're looking out for us first and foremost and they figured their service was good enough to warrant a show of support for their end of the situation.

Cry me a fucking river.

I'm not the only one switching either...

Here's one guy who lost not only CBS but Fox because of this shit.

Dish clearly doesn't want our money.

Maybe this is an elaborate ploy by them to go belly up and get a piece of that bail-out action all the banks and auto companies are getting.

OP, here in St. Louis, we had a similar issue with our local CBS affiliate, KMOV, which is a Belo company. When I upgraded to HDTV over the summer with a Series 3 Tivo, I was surprised that KMOV wasn't in HD, and all the other local channels were. Apparently, KMOV was asking Charter to pay to carry their HD content and Charter didn't have any of it.

Fast forward to mid-December, and then we find out that KMOV is about one step from getting pulled off of Charter entirely. KMOV is acting like Charter's big and bad because they don't want to spend a penny per subscriber per year to carry their content. Funny thing is that they're not paying any of the other local affiliates to carry their signal, so why should they start paying to carry one of them, knowing that the other ones will likely start asking for money from Charter to carry it.

I was all set to set up a Tivo just to do OTA stuff, and right before the end of the year, everything was fixed, and now, we had CBS in HD as well as SD. My guess is that someone blinked, and that was likely to be Charter.

These situations are getting worse and worse, and I'm sorry you had to go through it. I'm happy I only had a near-miss with losing my CBS affiliate.

Well as the name implies, I'm a Survivor junkie and I'm not about to go without it. So I blinked.

I would have totally stuck it out had they not accused this of being their customers faults in a half-handed kind of way.

I ditched Charter because they kept messing up when I would order WWE Pay Per Views. They would forget to click the signal on. This happened once every three months or so, and happened at two Wrestlemanias in a row. Plus they were snotty in general and kept raising the rates. When I returned my receivers to their office, I asked them if I was totally finished with them. "Yep, your service is totally terminated." I pulled out my Ipod and blasted "Celebrate Good Times" as I walked out. A couple people in line clapped. Good times.

I had a problem with them when I moved. At my new house they told me that I would be unable to get HD channels because there were too many trees even though I had HD at my old apartment. So their sevice tech recommended that I could call Dish if I wanted to cancel my contract and they would let me out of it with no penalty. This sounds like a fine solution to me until I called Dish and they told me that the technician was wrong and that if I want out of the contract then I need to pay a bunch of extra money.

By this time the technician had left my house.

So then I start going up the manager chain asking about getting out of my contract and get denied 3 times in a row like I did something wrong. Then they said that they could schedule a new appointment for installation in 2 weeks. This is after I took off the whole morning from work anyway and football season is about to start. I got so fed up on the phone that I told them to cancel the account anyway and I would pay the penalties. I was a good customer too (paid all my bills on time for 2+ years).

After waiting a couple of months no bill showed up at my house, so I guess they gave me a freebie in spite of themselves.:)

I hate Dish Network.
