Hey I was wondering if you guys could help me out, its not for me but for my parents really they need a laptop that is cheap. It doesnt need high specifications or anything, enough memory to hold microsoft office and other programs. Really something kind of basic I guess. It has to be new not used or refurbished. I dont want ne thing for trade just a deal from a site. If anyone could help me out that would be great and if not thanks for trying!

What size are your parents looking for? The cheapest + smallest (around8 8-11" screen size) are the eepcs. Their specs aren't the best, but they will be able to surf the net and type papers. The only thing about them is that they don't have a cd drive, so installing programs from discs will be out of the question. They will be around $350-500

For what they are using it just check the weekly best buy ad and pick one up when they are 400 or less. Usually it will be something like an acer 15" with a duo core processor and integrated graphics card. It will be more than capable for their uses.

The other option is a dell vostro, studio,or inspiron 15" most likely. They can be had for 4-500 with codes through dell. Just check slickdeals regularly otherwise. That would be the best place to locate a deal. Anyone telling you of a smoking laptop deal on cag will probably have found it there anyways.

I never realized why someone would want the eeepc's over a decent asus. the 160gb hard drive and 1gb ram > 4gb hard drive and 512 ram

Some people would prefer to carry a small, 2 pound computer that just needs to surf the internet, process word documents, or whatever low resource thing they are doing compared to lugging around a 6-10 pounder that has the dimensions of a text book (not width wise, height and length).

You do know there are some eeepc's that have over 100gb of ram and like a stick of ram. Not much compared to a regular laptop, but more than enough to do simple applications or storage.

If that's all it needs to do just get a new $200 laptop.

I just got a Dell Mini 12 from costco with win XP for ~$600 taxed & shipped. I use it for microsoft office, web-surfing, and videos; I'm enjoying this light(3.2lbs with 6 cell battery booty) portable machine. It is a 12.1 inch screen with the overall dimensions being nearly identical to the Macbook Air.

DOH! THIS LOOKS LIKE AN OLD THREAD!!!!!!

I'm in the same boat when comes to laptops since I have never owned one and used to Windows XP.

I'm thinking about the netbooks that have been mentioned in this thread, but have been kind of put off since I can find full-sized laptops for about the same price.

Netbooks are the cheapest, while there are low-end/priced laptops that are about the same price.

I'm torn between the two, the only real problem for me is typing on a netbook, but I think it is a matter of getting used to the smaller keyboard.

Screen size of a netbook shouldn't a be a problem if you're used to portable gaming.
