Post any really good obscure movies here

oracrest

CAGiversary!
Just wanted to get an idea for some good movies that are prety obscure, or generally not mainstream.

my contribution is "City of God"

If you like crime movies like godfather, or goodfellas, you would probably like this. Good characters, and some solid drama. Although it's subtitled, but definetly worth it. I know reading bothers a lot of people.

Also, one of the best Anime series I have ever seen is "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure." Keep in mind that Im not a big "anime" fan, and generally only like the kinds of ones that anyone would like (Akira, ghost in the Shell, Spirited Away, you know, the really good ones. In fact, i HATE all the cliche big eyed, overly dramatic "cutesy" style that a lot of anime seems to have). However, I can't recomend the Jojo series enough. It's as serious in mood as akira or ghost, and it's a unique take on the concept of superheroes, as well as a VERY cleverly written story. You would probably have to order it online, as it doesnt seem to make it to mainstream stores (which is a shame considering the loads of crap that do) If you can get past the silly name, and uninteresting box art, it really is a gem. I haven't shown it to anyone that hasn't really liked it.

not that i want to say what you can post here, but try not to tell other people their contribution sucks or is stupid, thats not the kind of thread i want to start. thanks.

Malena. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll lust for Monica Belluci and see her naked!

Seriously, if you think foreign films are these ultra-serious, heady affairs, see this film. It's what is feels to be 12 years old and in love with an older woman who doesn't know it.

Donnie Darko
Boondock Saints
S7ven
Shaolin Soccer
Death to Smoochie
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Snatch

For anime:

Ghost in the Shell - It's obsure to the mass public
Grave of the Fireflies - "" ""
Akira - "" ""

Really most anime other than DB/DBZ/DBGT are pretty obscure to the public. Most anime isn't really mainstream even though there are a lot people who watch it on AS. If you asked any person off of the street, they probably would barely be able to name DB.

Edit: I keep updating my list cause I keep remembering more. :D

Death to Smoochy is excellent

for anime Texhnolyze and Boogiepop phantom, although they are a tad strange, and definitely not for everyone.
Smoke
right on. I watched this in my english class in college, was really good.

A lot of those I wouldn't exactly call obscure, but mostly all excellent.

My contributions are Below, Equilibrium, Six-String Samurai, Cube, Grey Zone.

Quills, one of my all time favorite movies. It's about the marquis de sades last days in a mental institution. It's based on a true story, but very loosely. For those who don't know who he is, he was a french aristocrat (he lived through the french revolution) who was known for his sadistic sexual interests, of varying levels of consent, and was jailed for lengthy periods because of them. He wrote many books, none particularly good in the literary sense, but he is famous because of how graphic they are (much of his stuff fits right along with the most graphic and degrading japanese porn), the time they were written, and that he blends philosophy with sex (ie. while getting raped a girl starts thinking about the meaning of freedom). As odd as it may seem, his philosophy is actually his strongest point and why he is taken seriously. The film has kate winslet and michael caine in it, and a bunch of other big names I can't remember. It also won a few awards, essentially it was a critically acclaimed movie that no one really heard of or watched. I think best buy sells it for $6 bucks.

my sister bought that for my mom for Christmas, and no one has watched it yet (she also got Passion of the Christ and Gangs of New York for her B-Day and has not seen either of them yet)

I second this recommendation for Malena. I also recommend Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall, Spring. Its a Korean movie I just caught on DVD. I'm not sure if it counts as being obscure, though. While the movie itself is simplistic and doesn't offer much in way of plot, its a beatifully shot movie and if anything, it'll make you think a little.

Having watched the movie multiple times, it may lead to some uncomfortable moments if you watch it with your mother.

Zatoichi (all of them, but the new one imparticular was good and got no play)
Last Night
Memento (Got some play, but was quickly forgotten)
Boiler Room
Army of darkness
Assault on Precinct 13 (the original of course, I wish I could slap someone every time some asshat asked me if the new one is a sequel to Training Day...)
Last Starfighter
The Warriors

Fro anime:
Crest of the Stars
Gungrave
Voices of a Distant Star

SLC Punk, Ghost Dog. Also not sure just how obscure those two are, as that's rather subjective, but neither of them is super popular, and they're both excellent.
Buffalo '66 is one of the strangest movies that seems to have stuck with me for the longest time.
shot in the city that always sleeps. i saw them shoot a bit downtown when Vincent Gallo came home to revlive the Norwood nightmare and the shot on the street where you could see Marine MIdland Arena (where the sabres play when not locked out, now called HSBC Arena) towering over him is EXACTLY what it feels like to live in buffalo.

as far as flicks go

Zatoichi the Blindswordsman is available on your new release wall
and
spirited away- i know they sell it at target, but it is a very good movie.

Cannibal the Musical. Matt and Trey of Southpark fame made it.

The Killer is an awesome hong kong action flick

I also really liked Ghost World.

I hated death to smoochie... and I think I'm the only one...

And Donnie Darko... WHAT THE HELL WAS THE POINT?

*SPOILER*

He starts halucinating about people from the future to piece together the fact that hes going to die before he starts halucinating.... can anyone honestly tell me the point of the movie? So he kills the pedo and vandalizes the school... but then still dies like a month before he does either...

It's not that obsure but 'Rushmore' is one of my favorite movies of all time...

"Maybe I'm spending too much of my time starting up clubs and putting on plays. I should probably be trying harder to score chicks."

"So you were in Vietnam?"
"Yeah."
"Were you in the shit?"
"Yeah, I was in the shit."

"Nice nurse's uniform, guy."
"These are O.R. scrubs."
"Oh, are they?"

"I wrote and directed a hit play so I'm not sweating it either."
Good Burger
OMG! I wonder if I have that somewhere.. I haven't seen that for sale in.. years. I only saw the movie once, too. Holy crap.

Who would have guessed?

I know it's been said, but since I just finished watching it for the first time literally minutes ago, Donnie Darko.

Oh, and I loved Goodburger when I was younger, I watched it a shit load of times. Haven't seen it in a while, though; wouldn't mind picking it up on DVD sometime.

I'm assuming you're not a big David Lynch fan.

*SPOILER*

The jet engine provided enough energy to suck him into a 28 day time warp/pocket, however this time pocket is unstable (he's watching it implode from the mountaintop at the beginning/end, I can't remember which)

He figures this out unconsciously, and begins acting accordingly, as he realizes that he is no longer living in a real world with long term consequences.

Anyway, I think the point is that people are limited by their fears of real-world implications and societal conditioning. Only when freed from these bonds do we discover who we truly are. Throughout the film, we see that his actions have some good (getting the girlfriend, catching a ped) and bad (vandalizing the school) consequences, but at the end at least he is happy because he has truly and fully lived as himself.

Or maybe that's the caffeine talking.

pi and cube are great
as are some of the anime mentioned

but come on, drunken master 2 is the greatest martial arts film ever made

anything monty python has done is sweet, even if the dvds arent rare or anything the material is about as obscure as it gets (as are pretty much all movies directed by terry gilliam)

This is part of why I liked the movie. Yeah it's ambiguous, and there were a few subplots that weren't really explored enough, but the story really makes you think. It's all kind of surrealistic, and I like that kind of thing because it doesn't give you nice, easy answers, it just gives you feelings and makes you think and draw your own conclusions about it. It's somewhat like Blade Runner, the first two times I saw it, I was really confused as to what it was trying to say, but I wanted to see it again to try and get some kind of understanding.

Oh yeah, add Blade Runner to the list.

Memento
The Usual Suspects
Sleepers
Kalifornia
Seven
The Insider
Amores Perros
21 Grams
Sonatine
Taxi Driver
Infernal Affairs

I'll think of more later

Memento, #-o how could I forget Memento.

I just finished watching a rather interesting little movie, called "The last horror movie" if you decide to rent it, don't read anything about it, just rent it.

The Gungrave anime is great. It shouldn't even be considered anime, except for the fact that it's animated and Japanese. It is filled with more drama and emotions than most MOVIES.

It should be considered a crime drama.

Also watch Fight Club.

I second Suicide Kings. Great flick, lots of famous guys before you knew they were famouse.

Also:

Big Trouble in Little China (or most of John Carpenter's work)
Boondock Saints (mentioned already)
Bubba Ho-tep
Drop Dead Gorgeous
Galaxy Quest
Swingers
Made
High Fidelity (or most of John Cusak's films)
Judge Dredd (I can watch it over and over, probably personal opinion)
Starship Troopers

edit: So I guess these aren't really obscure, but you more than likely won't hear about them from asking friends about good movies.
